I got this on a whim and to this day it remains my favorite gun. It’s almost impossible to even explain why, but just the click of that trigger and the supersonic 17 HMR round crack through a suppressor... sub-MOA all day long, it’ll ALWAYS put a smile on your face. Actually everyone I’ve ever let shoot it (usually they’ve never even heard of it) ends up with the same grin on their face lol. Love the hand guard - threw a bipod and X-Sight 4K with large IR illuminator on mine and it’s the ultimate day/night farm gun for both varmint and predators.
I love my Savage 93R 17 HMR bolt-action rifle with Realtree camo on the whole stock. It's my groundhog killer rifle. Another awesome review 22 Plinkster
Just got mine yesterday and paired it with a vortex diamondback 3.5-10x50 and I love it I shot a penny sized group today at 100 yds!!! I love it thanks for making this video it really helped me decide on this awesome rifle!! Keep up the great videos.
Great, thourough review per usual Plinskster! You always do a terrific job givings the honest scoop on products. I love my RPR 22lr and just may need to start saving for the HMR.
Man all this 17hmr stuff makes me miss my old 22mag bolt gun. Not a big or relatively deadly round but that thing put a lot of food on the table when I needed it to the most
I'd argue that the 22 magnum is especially lethal. A regular CCI Maxi Mag Hollow point will expand to .35 caliber (size of a 9mm bullet) and penetrate 14-16 inches in gel when shot from a rifle. You don't get much better than that with a rimfire!
I've killed more stuff to eat with my Winchester Lever Action 22 Magnum I bought for $116.00 in 1976 than any other gun I own.It is a deadly round. And My Henry Golden Boy with actually out shoot in as far as long distance.I believe its because of the long octagon barrel.I love them both.
The Ruger Precision series are awesome for the price point. I have the 6.5 Creed and with the savings of the system I was able to step up a couple of notches into a Vortex Razor Gen II. Just a tack driver for the money I have in it.
These precisions kick ass . We have a few of them in different calibers . My favorite is .243 . They don’t make that one anymore so it’s worth something now for sure . These guns r crazy accurate with a good scope
Hornady loads a 20gr XTP In 17hmr and I have always gotten really good accuracy with them..lil harder to find but worth it! Thanks 22Plinkster & God Bless ya brother!!👊👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Great video! nice shooting!! I have shot thousands of rounds of both 17 HMR and 22 WMR--it's a toss up for me, but I would give the edge to the 17 on accuracy.. I loved my Ruger 22 WMR auto--it throws alot of lead and was highly reliable--now I've gone bolt action with the 17 HMR in a CZ 452 wood and I can't believe the accuracy.. Recently I saw what I thought was a tennis ball in the open desert across from my house (I shoot out the window of my office) and took 4 shots at aprox 120 yards--I drove over and picked it up a few weeks later and it turned out to be a Lacrosse ball of all things out in the desert?? The 17 actually penetrated a solid rubber Lacrosse ball and was hit 4 times.. So the 17 has plenty enough power to go through a solid rubber Lacrosse ball at 100+ yards.. as for the 22 mag I love the power and it carries well. Either way you can't go wrong. Tomatoe, Tomato..
Now that was a interesting video and that 17 HMR that's plenty of accuracy potential. I've never owned one but it is a interesting caliber. For me personally I would probably prefer the 22 magnum. Great video and I would like to see how the 22 magnum would perform.
Great video. Wish they also made it in 17WSM. I could match my Savage heavy barrel to this and not have to buy different ammo. Also would look good next to my 6.5 RPR. I also agree that the 20 grain SWM do not shoot well. But in the 25 grain it holds MOA at 200 yds
I really REALLY want to get one of these. I’ve always had a soft spot for these small caliber rifles just because they’re so damn fun to plink away at targets with. 17 hmr is a caliber I’ve wanted to own ever since I was a child and this platform is just beautiful. Unfortunately I’m a broke college student in my early twenties so I’m not in a position financially to buy one of these for myself but this is gonna remain on my wishlist till the day I’m eventually able to afford one.
It’s a ruger, and 17 hmr is roughly the same price as 9mm. All it takes is a little budgeting for a few months. Spoken by another broke college student
I'd love to have an .17 hmr to use for varmint and squirrel. By the sounds of it, people who like their 22 mags are fond of these. A friend of mine had a lever action that was slick as hell. This is such a cool gun, though. Almost looks like an old German mg42
That .17 is ultra-accurate for its cost and this kind of a precision rifle platform. Just don't shoot it on a windy day and it's a TON of fun, $0.12 / rds versus $0.50-$3.00 for your standard rifle rounds. This setup consistently impresses all of my friends who initially think it's some kind of a toy, it'll out-shoot all of their deer rifles 200yds and under.
I have a Ruger Precision Rifle in .308 and now you have sold me on the .17 HMR for target was thinking .22 LR but I think the .17 will be my pick over the .22 Magnum .
I just bought a 10-22 target model, and i feel that its as accurate as this is. I could be totally wrong, but i am not an amazing shot and i have only shot it a little, but i was able to get great groups.
Plinkster, I just took delivery of this same rifle. Its not simply accurate. This thing shoots with surgical precision....Very happy camper...thank you sir.
I had no idea these even existed. Not like I was looking for them. My interest in this is peaking near a level similar to owning any rifle in .22 WMR or .17 HMR. If I bought one, this would be it.
Honestly most of the 17's shoot about the same. It really just boils to which one you personally like better in your hands. My savage was as good or maybe slighly better than that. Hard to tell with the limited number of shots and short amount of time he was shooting. After some time or on a different day it might shoot better than that. Mine didn't seem to have that first shot flyer thing though. It shot the same cold or hot, it didn't care. I have a .22 precision, a savage 22 mag and a savage 17hmr with a bull barrel. The ruger is over all a nicer rifle in my opinion, fit and finish, adjustments and trigger. But it did cost more. And my savages are just basic models, they don't have fancy stocks nor are they stainless. The savage 17hmr is more accurate than either of them but I give that to the caliber. The 17HMR is just an accurate rimfire round in general.
This is my dream rifle the 17hmr is all you need cci solid brass 20 grain are lazer accurate and foxes even larger game are toast up to 300m the 17 grain polymers just blow small game into crow food there light too so carrying a few boxes of ammo into the feilds easy did i mention i love this round the. 17mach is great too its a necked down. 22lr just a tip plinkster 17hmr really dont like being shot through supressed rifles the bore pressure is extremely high and inside the can theres a huge blast of turbulent air that causes a slight yaw in the projectile use a rowan engineering air stripper it totally strips all the turbulent air away from the round upon the second it exits the barrel
My savage 93 loves the 20 grain game point and the fmj a few weeks ago I shot a sub inch group at 200 but my cz 455 shoots 1.5 inch groups at 100 with them
Honestly, I got my Ruger Precision Rimfire in 22lr as a practice plinker to go along with my Ruger Precision Rifle in 6.5 creedmore (though I'm thinking about upgrading to 300 win mag now). CCI standard velocity is 5 cents where 17 HMR or 22 mag is 20 cents. At that point you might as well get one in 223.
Another good honest video, one group is not a true indication of the rifle's accuracy need to shoot say five groups then look at the average, I have watched revues where the shooter has groups of half an inch at 100 yards consistantly in less than ideal conditions I wonder. Regards from Down under
I hope this thing is more accurate than the 17 HMR Ruger American Carbine I had. The thing with only group with the Full Metal Jacket ammo which is bad when you're shooting Spruce grouse and the thing just zipped right through him and does no damage.. good video and review
Alaskan Ballistics LOL, when shooting Spruce grouse you want the bullet to zip right thru with little damage. When I hunted for small game I didn't want to blow the hell out of it, I wanted to preserve as much meat as possible with little damage. Always tried to head shot tree squirrels so I didn't damage or taint the meat.
@@ckim6400 i tried that tooo but with the 17hmr i had to blood trail a neck shot to around the bird 75 yards later lol... clipped the neck at 50 yards... still alive when i found it...
Just zeroed my 22 wmr. I shot Maxi-Mags, 45 grain Critical Defense and Federal 50 grain game shock. The Federal shot the best .500", the Critical Defense went .625" and the Maxi-Mags just inside 1.25". Groups were shot @ 50 yds, at 40 degF with a 1 o'clock breeze of 3 to 6 mph. I figure that's not bad.
I have a video idea. I always wondered if small insects in the air can affect accuracy when beeing hit accidentally by a small caliber like .22 lr. So can you make a test by placing some dead insects on a string that are perfectly aligned with the bullet trajectory? You could then test on different ranges, I think when you hit the insect at close range the effect on the bullet further downrange will be higher, I think this test would be very interesting!
I enjoy your review as much as I do your trick shooting. This is an interesting development. I think, though, IMHO, it does not approach my marlin xt-17 and I am just fine with an "old fashion" wood stock. Mine (maybe it's the microgroove barrel) likes the game point 20's the best. however, I was trying out the new 17g cci and took a ground squirrel at 197 yards this past spring . not bad for a 68 year old. (along with 96 of his fellow squeakers) making the rancher upset.
Looks like a co2 rifle but what a caliber the sweet 17 is its DEFINITELY my favorite caliber ever made......oh btw if ur shooting a .17 in wind use the cci 20 grain as it handles wind better
My savage 93 H-Bar would shock me if it shot anything over an MOA group at 100 yards with Hornady brand ammo. The CCI brand with the Hornady pills seemed to shoot a hair larger groups. I only used a bipod and my gun bag on the back. I should have kept that rifle, it was a blast.
I have the same rifle in a boyds pro varmint and my 50yd groups look like his hundred yard groups.... bummer because I had one years ago that I had to sell to make rent and that thing hammered. Bought it again and was kind of bummed out.... That being said Ive also had days where I had no problem hitting a 7×12" IPSC at 300yd. Hopefully its just me.
@@Longshot762x51 mine was 9ne if the last ones savage blued. The MARK II I bought a year after was parkerized I believe. Which made the bolt slightly gritty until it broke in and really doesn't like water. Even my mark 22 will hold around MOA with just cci standard. I even took 1st in every class with it in a 50 yard bench rest 22 shoot and had the highest overall score. The guys with their $2k match rifles and lapua match ammo couldn't believe it. Lol
13:40 those groups at 100 look like my groups at 50 using the stock iron sights on my 10/22 takedown. Also kind of want the RPR in 338 lapua magnum, but it's like $2000 and the rounds aren't cheap either.
I have found the 17 always seems to be more accurate than the 22 mag. It is also less picky about ammo. And it shoots flatter farther. I sighted mine in at 130 yards. The 22 mag does hit harder though and handles the wind better. I guess it depends on what you want to shoot with it. If thought the 17hmr worked great for paper and birds. That thing will flat out mess up a starling or a crow. If you don't care about half inch groups, shoot inside of 100 yards and/or shoot things a bit larger or tougher then the 22 mag might be a better choice. The really nice thing about the 17 is it is hard to find one that won't shoot well. Even cheap ones are accurate. The down side is you might not like your .22 as much anymore lol.
My little cz varmit 17 hmr with a fixed power leupold m8 fine duplex is on of the most accurate rifle I've ever owned, throw a bit of wind in the mix and a couple blades of grass and there useless !!!
Wind is always a problem here in central Oklahoma (near where you were hog hunting) recently. If we have a day with 5 to 10 MPH wind it is called a calm day. Can't do a lot of shooting unless you can figure "windage and elevation" on the fly. Most of the time we use SWAG (silly wild ass guess) or just plain luck.
That first group at 100 with the wild flyer is likely because of switching between different types of ammo without taking any fouling shots before hand.
Great video 22plinkster, my cold bore shots were so bad on my RPRR that I thought my Engage 4-16 deploy moa scope was bad... Soon sent mine back to Ruger as it would throw cold bore low about 4in before grouping ok? We'll see how it does, it's a 22lr version.
.22 magnum is still my favorite all around all year hunting rifle, anything coyotes and smaller than that game. The .17 us fast and accurate, but a .22 magnum will carry more energy down range and the .22 mag isn't as affected by the wind as a .17 is. Mainly because the bullet is twice the weight. Still neither are as accurate in the wind as, say, a .30-06, but for what they are, they do really well inside of 150 yards.
I love rim fire rifles .....Let me rephrase that, I love super accurate rim fire rifles. the rifle I enjoy shooting the most is my Kidd / Ruger 10/22. That rifle will shoot a 1/4 group at 50 yrds all day and not finicky about the ammo your slinging down the barrel. I wish my CZ 455 heavy barrel was as accurate, I may have to have it re-crowned, but the good news is the 17hmr barrel i put on it is a lot better.
I dont know why you would need such a powerful scope for a bullet that wont shoot 400 yards effectively on a breezy day. I love having choices though.I can shoot 200 yards with my Winchester 9422M Lever rifle all day long. Great video. And Great new fifles.Just overkill for such small rounds...even though 22mag is one of my Favorites
i get decent accuracy at 300 with my 17 hmr just put it in a boyds gun stock and it shoots pretty well out to 300. not sub moa but can hit a prairie dog with in a couple shots.
Great video and awesome little rifle. Unfortunately I live in Oregon and with SB 501 expected to pass into law. This rifle and many others will become illegal. Dark times in Oregon.
I have an idea that you might be able to get a ammo / rifle company to take a look at. Take the 17WSM and open it up to 20 Cal this would give slightly heavier bullet over the 17 Cal that would hopefully Buck the wind a little better with a higher velocity and bullet coefficiency over the 22mag. Then look at the lehigh-defense Controlled Chaos bullets for the loading because of its solid copper Design This would give you the longest bullet possible.
great video as always. After watching your Ruger precision .22LR video I went and got one ! Now I need the .17 ! question: what suppressor are you running and or can you recommend one that doesn't cost as much as the rifle !
Your grip changed during the test. Early on you wrapped your thumb around the pistol grip. Later on your thumb was "along" the grip. I wonder if that had any effect.
I'm not sure if was mentioned but on the first shot of the first series you moved your rifle to look in the chamber. After that every shot was almost dead on. ou mentioned that you thought it was a cold barrel but the video looks like it might have just been repositioned in a slightly different fashion.
I know this is old video but I have shot cci 17 hmr jacked hollow points out of my first gen savage 17 with no accur trigger and 3 9 40 in a better 5 shot group than he did here I'm pleased with my self.
I shoot the a17 rounds in my rossi rb17 and i get great groups under 1in at 100 and 1-1 1/4 @200yds. I had a box of game points but every casing split at the neck.
I just can’t choose man maybe I got to get all three of them!! But the 17 HMR seems like I might go that direction mainly because there’s one in stock at my local shop when all the LRs and mags are out of stock for this very popular rifle.
Plinkster if I could make a suggestion... You should shoot N or S and zero in the same direction... (of course you may already know that but if not) You should also zero in the same direction due to Earth spin... Zeroing E and shooting W will drop your POC and visa versa when zeroing W. The thing I'm curious about is if that lite of projectile is affected by the same earth spin? Now I could very well be barking up the wrong tree...what do you think?
