People who talk about RaI are arrogant pricks, though. Who are they to claim they know the intentions of Crawford and Mearls (or even Gygax originally)? Because they've been reading Sage Advice? Sage Advice is for clarifications and is therefore RaW (except for when Mearls puts up something that is clearly wrong and contradictory to the RaW). At the end of the day RaW IS RaI, especially in 5e. The rules are pretty fucking simple - people only get confused because there are so many of them.
@MK-11111
@MK-11111 4 года назад
@@CrashSable erm.. maybe it's because rules as intended is intentionally arbitrated by the pertinent judge of the session, who is the dm, since you cannot have the designers arbitrating at every single session. It's not arrogant to say that the intention is the interpretation of the appointed adjudicator. Otherwise, you're arguing that judges have no precedent. Case in point: who is Mike Mearls or Crawford to decide what's intentional at my table? It's arrogant to decide that what's best for you is best for all.

@@CrashSable I wouldn't call Rule Zero actively hostile (Unless, of course, there's a bad GM actively weaponizing it), but rather a logical extension of the GM's rule as part referee and part storyteller, which makes them the final arbiter of rules-at-the-table. It's integral to TTRPGs running smoothly. Nothing kills a game faster than a GM stopping to look up/for a specific, niggling rule in a book (How much does crafting a staff cost, and how much does using a hand-crafted item lower the Object Resistance when playing as an artificer in Shadowrun...), rather than making an off-the-cuff ruling to keep the game flowing (Half the listed cost in the book to buy it, and by a rating equal to the number of net hits remaining after the Extended Test to make the staff, for example).

@@dannysplace7 Other than the fact that giving out levels for "how much crap did you fight" and only that is fucking weird, it's hardly lazy DMing to make the game easier. Because the maths isn't always easy. For one, you need to know how many players there'll will be (not a given) plus account for any NPCs, which you may or may not have planned for (because players love dragging NPCs into things), and there's the fact that if you follow the actual XP rules for 5e, players get pitiful amounts. A 4 person level 1 party fights 4 zombies, an encounter supposedly balanced for their level, and would have to do that 6 times to level. It's ridiculous.

Milestone experience is superior for long term games because it means the DM has tighter control over the flow and rise in power, which allows for easier balancing. A lot of "rules lawyer" types hate it tho because it means they can't powergame and get in extra fights to level up faster. That's the joke, those 3 things (fudged rolls, cinematic combat, milestones) are all great tools for DMs to make more interesting games but are considered "rule breaking" and "cheating" by players who only care about the game *as* a game and a set of rules in a book, and not as a collaborative experience.
@videogollumer
@videogollumer 3 года назад
@@LIscariot Well, you have to admit, point progression experience does make gaining a level feel "earned". You feel like you worked for that level rather than having just jumped right to it just because the DM said so. It adds a sense of immersive realism to the game, if you ask me; but I guess it depends on whether you want realistic, cinematic, or a balance between the two.

You can wield anything but if it's not a "weapon" item (armour spikes are not) you take a penalty to hit and with the additional penalties associated with dual wielding (assuming you aren't a dual wielding built fighter) you'd never hit anything. The better question is whether you can *throw* an improvised weapon, to which the answer is yes but good luck finding the book the rules for that are printed in.

Rules as intended actually breaks the game by limiting the options of the weakest characters in the game, the players. Rules as written don't allow automatic success, and you can decide that an option is impossible with RAW, since you set the DC of any given roll, and if you think it would be above 30 or break the rules you can deny them it.
@Nionivek
@Nionivek 4 года назад
@@supersmily5811 Same time rules as written also helps to ground the players and lets them not only consider their options but get an idea of when something IS powerful (rules as written are a great jumping off point). With Milestone Experience your level is at the whim of the DM, and it's not always a good thing...

Plus if you make encounters specifically to level everyone up, meanwhile dividing that down so they all get an equal amount, they are going to die. A party of 4 level 1s needs 300 XP to go to level 2; Therefore they need to fight a 1200 XP battle to do that, which can come from 12 orcs. Or 120 Cr 0 animals! Just use milestone levelling and unconventional monsters, it's fine
@ChevaliersEmeraude
@ChevaliersEmeraude 4 года назад
@Peter Senior then DON'T make one specific encounter to make characters level up! That's a ridiculous thing to do. Your players WILL level up eventually if they fight 1 orc 12 times, separately, as well! I've already pointed out why Milestone is the worst in my previous comment: Even if you fight 12 orcs you won't level up at all that way if the DM doesn't want you to.

@@ChevaliersEmeraude If you've been playing for 8 months and have only gone up to level 3, that just means that either you don't play very often at all, or your DM is setting their milestones too far apart. That's an excellent quote for newer players. I have seen and played in games run by the TSR old guard, and this is how they play. The DM is above the rules. If you have a DM who abuses that power, your issue is with a person, not the system. Before you start playing, you should have a DM that you trust with limitless power, and an understanding that the DM and the players want the same thing; a fun game.
