Nothing matters more than long-term consistency. Consistently small efforts trump occasionally great efforts. You can take a micro-step toward your fitness and endurance right now. It does not have to be a 60 minute run - go run for 10 minutes. Injured - go walk for 10 minutes. Start small and stay consistent.

Great podcast!!!! I am F 72 yrs old and going after Abbott World Marathon Majors and have 2 races to go. This podcast is an eye opener for me. My favorite message : Consistency over time is the key to endurance. I am looking forward to creating and navigating my own landscape and territory! The idea is liberating for me!!! Thank you so much!!! 😊

I have completed a few 5ks, 10ks and 1 half marathon . All within this last year when I started running due to the insistence of my wife. I have never thought of doing such things. The talk about being curious and discovering what my body can do is indeed an adventure. My takeaway....we can do more than we think we can if we give it time and slowly build up to it.. safely. I have signed up to do the 50k dead horse ultra in Moab Utah this November without having done a full marathon 😅. It seems crazy doing this at 46 years old but It is going to be a great adventure.

I am one of those that went from my first 5k straight to a marathon at 46 years old. I trained for my first 5k from July to October. In late December I decided I was going to train for a March marathon. I was a bit disappointed at the time with a 3:41:xx finish but have since realized it was a pretty big accomplishment for that small amount of training. I loved attacking the training block to try to reach a goal, but I fell into that trap of not having a purpose after the race and just quit the running for the most part for the next 8 months. I feel I’ve grown a bit as I picked running back up the January and have run consistently for the past 5 months with no goal or race scheduled. I am trying to separate/differentiate the love of achievement from the love of just running.

This episode struck so many chords for me. Really fantastic. I wrote on my refrigerator “consistency over time will get you there“, but there were so many other quotes that I heard while running that I need to go back and listen to it.

Great discussion. The concept of desire/interest in what to do next. The concept of what do you find interesting to then choose to do it. Not demanding you do it. I've waffled on my childhood and what i did and why. Was i demanded to do it and then did i enjoy it. During or after it. I enjoyed the sports I wanted to play. Not the ones i was forced to play. I've done a few endurance events. One was trauma and I wasn't convinced I wanted to do it. But the collective friends/experience was fun in the end. During, not so much. I was forced to go to the beach and sit in the hot sun or the cold water. I went recently as an adult and wow it was so much better, to make the choice to go and do it. To run for fun and enjoy it, way better. One serious thing to consider is a coach for a true long distance event is nutrition and pace. During the one long event, 4 hours. tough mudder, at altitude and cold temps. People, me too, bonked. Hard and serious. People were curled up on the side with cramps that wouldn't go away. Hypothermia. It is real and needs to be discussed before hand. To understand it and know when to stop and ask for help. Being with a partner is very helpful. A good coach or friend can set you up for better success. But know when to fold and step out.

When I was in college, we went spearfishing at night. Within 30 minutes we had to get out of the water due to a friend being stung by jellyfish "Portuguese man of war". Things that go bump in the night in deep dark waters.😱

i loved this! all of it. if i'd choose a specific part it would be the part of self talking to yourself right before you get home to your family, friends, or whoever deciding to wash whatever off and be whoever you want to be at that moment. i am 3 months into trail running and into running in general ( only did a couple of runs and challenges randomly before that but never had an idea what i was doing) and now my eyes are on my Ultra trail debut running a 53km local trail race late in september!

Love this podcast, advice and message. “Longevity and consistency wins” … it’s about having the right perspective, Chris is right on there will always be faster, stronger ones. That’s not what it’s about. The conversation about being prepared for the down that comes after a big adventure is impactful, it’s true. “Keep it weird” 🙌 Floris 🙌

Ensuring you're idea's and practices are correct or on the correct path by discussing and lisening to people with different or opposiing idea's is important (validiation or adaptation of thoughts and practices through adversity) That is my favorite takeaway from this podcast, well that is what I took away from it anyhow.

Floris, I am new to low heart rate training and a have 2 questions: 1- I am 73, slim and have always either walked or ran, though never fast. Should I set my alarm at 107, 112 or 117? 2- what is the book you most recommend that can guide me? I love your RU-vid and Podcast and have already experienced quite a few. Thanks!
