Do you think we should expect starters and veteran players make it their responsibility to mentor the players that are aiming to take their position?

Alex Smith changed people’s perception of what an incumbent starter should do. Mahomes constantly credits Alex for taking him under his wing. Then Jimmy G followed that up how he handled Trey. So from a public view, that’s become the expectation for veteran QBs. In a literal sense it’s not Ryan’s job to mentor but it sounds bad when you actually say it out loud
@kylem6370
@kylem6370 2 года назад
@Scott c That’s a prime example but then the perfect counter to that is, where’s Alex smiths super bowl ring? Ppl forget NFL is a business first and they’re not going to keep a backup QB at starting QB money. Especially if it’s a guy who can still be a starter in the league. So I can’t blame tannehill for not wanting to Go out of his way to help a guy Who is trying to take his job and cost him from making millions and form winning a Super Bowl

Alex is one of my favorite Chiefs players as a person. He handled Mahomes signing and imminent take over with a lot more grace than most would expect out of an athlete. I also think there's a lot of natural coach in Alex. And to be fair to Tannehill, basically being told you're being replaced and if you could please teach that guy to do your job on the way out? Nah.

@randy7796
@randy7796 2 года назад
@Tyler the way you described the QB position is the way every position on the field can be described. Everyone on the field wins games in their own way. If you're a QB, it's actually most understandable, in contrast to other positions, to not want to mentor your backup since there's only ever one QB on the field at once. At least with other positions they can share the field and show their worth at the same time. QBs don't have the luxury of being laid back and simply accepting their replacement.

Then he's not doing 100% to try to win. If he isn't helping his backup, and he goes down to an injury, he's actively HURT their chances to win. Maybe you think that's not his problem, if he goes down it proves how much the team needs him. But what about if it is his problem? What about if he goes down for 2 weeks at the end of the year and the team needs a win to get into the playoffs? Then he's screwed himself over. He, and his teammates, both get hurt if he's not helping his replacement be ready.

The difference is if you’re great enough then you’ll be great somewhere else. You think if Willis was on the Chief’s the Mahomes would think that way. Ryan just knows he ain’t it and if Willis over takes him then QB1 isn’t a real thing somewhere else. He’s spoiled. He’s never had to compete as QB1 his entire NFL career. Still quite a few QB coaches who haven’t played a single NFL snap in their life. It’s kinda difficult to relate and fully understand something when you’ve never experienced it. As a player in the same position who has experienced the league and also had quite a bit of help learning from the starters he was backing up when he initially got drafted you would think he would return the favor especially when you are quite frankly getting paid way more than your play on the field, specifically in the playoffs, warrants.

@@mastermikeful What? Dude was the starter for Miami then became the starter for the Titans midway through his trade season…his coaches and himself have gotten him to this point (and Derek Henry). You’re missing what he’s saying as well. He doesn’t want to help mold the kid to play because he still wants to be the starter and he will do anything to beat the kid out. If Willis asks questions on how he made a read and why he made it, he will answer him no doubt. He’s 100% right on not being the person to groom someone into being an NFL QB.

@@240devil1 yeah he was starting… for a tanking team. I don’t guess you would remember the fact that his career was quickly coming to an end with the Dolphins due to his lack of results. Yes I know it’s not just his fault for the lack of results but as a top 10 draft pick and a qb most teams are looking for a franchise QB. He showed glimpses of being a franchise QB but also showed quite a bit more that he is just a run of the mill QB. Simple as that. Titans and Derrick Henry saved his career and gave him a massive payday(which I still believe was way too much and I said so when we re-signed him). He’s been complaining about us trading AJ but Tannehill’s contract is at least part of the reason why it happened. I understand not wanting to give up your spot and I have no problem with that and yes I know he didn’t say he wouldn’t help just that it’s not his job to train him. I’d just like to see a guy who’s career we saved show a little appreciation and a little repayment of faith like we had in him when we saved him from the tanking Dolphins by helping out our QB of the future because at 33 about to turn 34 you don’t have much time left. Would you actually be ok with training that person? Knowing it's them that will have your job soon after? It's not your job to train. It's the establishments job to handle mentoring. You know...the COACHES/SUPERVISOR, you know. Half these people saying this may have not been in a situation like his, and it's great Alex and Jimmy did it, but we're all different people and there's no right or wrong way to handle it. I agree with Tannehill but It wasn't a good look for him to say something like this publicly. Aside from creating unneeded attention on the time he's entering that stage in his career where hes going to be on some teams depth chart for the sole purpose of mentoring the young players. If hes not willing to that in a couple of seasons hes good as uses to plenty of teams

I remember reading that TB12 would teach Kyle Trask a lot of things like how to act in certain situs, but would demur when Trask would ask him to explain the logic behind a QB throwing decision. This cooled Trask's attitude against his QB but the point here is a vet QB doesn't need to teach rookie his methods and strategy that took years of experience to learn. If he's worth his salt the rookie would deduce why after a while if watching, observing and thinking b

I would tbh I’m older and I know my abilities. Why should I be scared of another player if I’m not confident in my own abilities. They drafted Willis in the 3rd round not 1st by no means is willis going to start day 1 unless tannehill stinks it up which I think he will. You can still fight for your job in a healthy manner like jimmy g no one is telling this nigga to be his friend just to mentor him but apparently it’s not his job as the qb and leader of the team to do it. But I can’t blame him he’s not the face of the team it’s Henry
