Most of these marriages weren't forged by love. So, in a modern context, I agree with you, but I kind of sympathize with the wife in question because she was apparently miserable and women have needs, too. Both carnal and affectionate.

I remember Lennox giving Charlotte the strategic advice, “Wait till your enemy’s close then take your best shot.” He truly is a cruel strategist..a real man of war! However, while he may have won this particular “battle” of getting to Colbourne, he won’t win the “war” of Charlotte’s heart!! ❤️

What really makes me so angry about this, is that Mr. Colbourne did not have to keep the affair quiet. No one in polite society would have faulted him for his behavior and would have taken his side. By keeping quiet Mr. Colbourne protected her reputation (and by extension Lennox's as well). Not only that, but Mr. Colbourne was under no obligation to raise Leo as his own child. He could have dropped her off at an orphanage and now one would have faulted him. Yet, instead he kept her, gave her his name, insuring that she would have a good life and be thought of well in society. Mr. Colbourne has been protecting her. And how does Colonel Lennox repay him? By being a complete snake and striking right at the heart of Mr. Colbourne's insecurities and fears, deliberately trying to sabotage Colbourne's growing romance with Charlotte. The man is utterly despicable! This moment is what made him my least favorite character, even more so than Edward Denham and that's saying a lot!

Late to the show....Lennox did not propose because he loved C, he did it because he wanted to possess her, and do her the favor of raising her class from “farmer”. Such a noble man....NOT! His face has a grimace all the time, and his mouth is always frowning, except when he’s trying to charm.

Lennox admits what most know, that Charlotte is clearly in love with Alexander, so there shouldn’t be any doubt that she is. So this creates a question for me....why does Zander keep pushing her away, really? He loves her, kids love her, she “clearly” loves him....so why? Even after he’s acted like a jerk trying to be so “honorable”, she loves him. Even when he admits he did wrong with Lucy, she loves him. She kisses him back “as a willing participant” when he has kissed her. When she loves him after all this, why would he think he is unworthy? The fact Zander goes back to face Lennox and even THANK HIM, raises him up even higher. And, the quick explanation he gives Leo is amazing! A & C’s eye contact is amazing!! Lennox is a controlling creep, and if he did use both sisters they were foolish. Was Lucy just a party girl? Did she love Zander or Lennox? Was she ashamed of her pregnancy or is that just Zander’s take? And, was she hoping to skate out the pregnancy without Z knowing? And if she and her sister were inseparable, then her sister knew about the infidelity and baby. What happened to Augusta’s mother & father that Zander ended up with an illegitimate child & niece?

maaaaaan I just realized something what if Colbounres father abused Colbourne? Since he was an alcoholic!!! (Lady Denam mentioned it) And people who were abused since childhood have a hard time giving love back to other people and when he married Lucy he was still in the state of being victim of abuse and he never learned how to love and Lucy on the other hand was lively and needed love and that's where Lenox came in the picture. Wow and also remember Colbourne told Charlotte about his abusive governess? And when Charlotte said shes sorry for him going through that his face expression changed into warmth (please rewatch that moment, I melted at his expression) meaning that all he needs to do is share what he went through in childhood and set himself free from that! Man if this theory is true then it would explain why Colbourne acted the way he did with Charlotte (sending her away)... He thinks that he is not cable of love, and when he told Charlotte under the tree "perhaps when sooner you will realize why it's best for the girls to know me less" he didn't just mean the story about lucy, there's something else, but Charlotte has managed to open him up to love his girls finally but there's a lot of work for him to completely open up to love Charlotte fully as well which will happen in season 3!

@@yvettemarshallTWN Decent theory. My guess is that Lucy was just a fun loving girl married to a man with simpler tastes. Austen regards "fashionable" women as women easily led astray. For all of her feminism, Austen tended to equate attention-seeking women as capable of infamy. Austen would regard Lucy, not Alexander, as the person who is guilty. According to the standards of the time, Alexander was lucky to take back his "ruined" wife.

@@Orphen42O Brules (bullshit rules!) rearing their ugly heads again! Two ill-suited people marrying because society said it was a good match (on the outside) with no attention paid to temperament (inside) of the parties involved. Nothing wrong with being fun-loving; nothing wrong with having simpler tastes provided the proper regard is paid. Fitzwilliam and Elizabeth made a good match due to their similar temperaments (insides) even though society deemed them ill-suited on the outside. Willingness to please one’s mate also comes into play. Elizabeth loved to dance and Fitzwilliam learned to endure it for her happiness! Then there’s Lady Catherine to test Elizabeth’s commitment to her stoic darling. Need I say more? Austen was a very clever woman. Almost Empathic.

The scene in which Mrs Wheatley puts her hand on Colbourne’s shoulder and calls him by his first name tells me that she has known him since he was a child. She reminds me of the housekeeper at Pemberley (P&P) who knows him better than anyone. She likely protected him from an abusive father.

I wonder a lot about the time line of Lucy & Colbourne's marriage. He says that he and Lucy married young but doesn't say how young or how long they lived in London before he moved to his inherited property? Could they have been there 6-7 years before Colbourne got tired of London and moved leaving her for one last season there. She was obviously more of a socialite than he was. I ask because Augusta is 18 years old and being she's the daughter of Lucy's twin then she must have been born when Lucy's twin sister was very, very young and Leonora being 8 years was born when Lucy was 8-9 years older than her sister was when Augusta was born . I'm just wondering if Lucy and Colbourne were married for many years and she remained childless which was causing a strain on their marriage and that was the reason Colbourne took a break and escaped to Sanditon. The fact that he returns to London to find her with child would have been a extra hard kick in the gut for him and why he didn't handle it well (who could blame him). Lennox doesn't seem to have known that Lucy was pregnant so I assume she broke off her affair with him without telling him. Lennox trying to justify having an affair with a married woman is nauseating no matter how troubled the woman was. I don't know how Colbourne didn't rip his head off!!
@susanfirth9883
@susanfirth9883 2 года назад
Agree with much of the above, and the timeline has been questioned by many. Re: Alexander and Lucy, my feeling is that they hadn’t been married long when he inherited the estate and he needed to get back to put things in order, plus he was much more comfortable in the country. But he would still be susceptible to guilt about leaving her there. I’m hoping for a Jane Eyre type ending where Charlotte hands Alexander THEIR child in the final shots, but my feeling is that we’ll get a wedding instead. (Not complaining!!) 🥰

Ok--So I think we were denied a moment. Charlotte and Leo ride home. Which means Alexander and Charlotte rode to camp. So by that logic, he gave her a horse, possibility helped her mount, might have seen a flash of ankle before the two raced to the camp. Maybe a hasty conversation between Alexander and Charlotte to assure themselves everything will be ok. Just saying - there’s missed opportunity there. Hopefully we’ll get a deleted scene.

Lennox is definitely attractive in a "bad boy way", He will definitely be back in Season 3 because there is definitely a need for a little villainy. Colbourne will also be back, Somehow, Ralph has to be eliminated. The writers can not kill off another of Charlotte's suitors, Keeping with the favorite story arcs of Jane Austen: Charlotte Bronte, framework. Ralph will:1.) have impregnated some servant; 2.) be secretly married; 3,) have thought his wife was dead but she has actually survived the wreck of a ship; 4.) believe rumors spread by Lennox about Charlotte's immoral behavior with Colbourne and , therefore, break off the engagement; or 5.) refuse to marry Charlotte because her father dies in debt,

I'm hoping that this gets answered next season. I've always been curious if maybe Lucy had some sort of mental illness? Nothing extreme, but maybe she was already susceptible to bouts of depression? That kind of thing was not talked about openly back then, but Alexander always makes it seems like Lennox took advantage of her vulnerability and preyed upon her. It was her choice to stay in London without him, so I find it hard to believe it was simply that she was lonely or feeling insecure about their marriage when it was agreed they would live apart for a season since he had recently inherited his families estate. It seems like they were probably not the best match to begin with and they were probably too young and emotionally immature for marriage with such issues.

There's also evidence to suggest that Mr. Colbourne's father was abusive. He let the governess beat the current Alexander and his brother. When Lady Denham mentioned the late Mr. Colbourne, Alexander immediately got defensive and said he wasn't his father. Lady Denham replied that she was relieved as it would save her a fortune in wine, implying that the late Mr. Colbourne was an alcoholic and alcoholics do tend to have made tempers. It's not surprising really that Alexander is insecure and having his wife cheat on top of that would also knock his confidence.

Lennox’s strategic mind in play. Lennox was in shock over discovering he has a daughter. He only said to Leo what he did because she had ambushed him, right in the heart! Leo took aim at him right with the distraction of Charlotte and Alexander’s arrival, “are you, are you my father?” He was unprepared and went with a retreat mode till he could regroup his defenses. When we see the toy soldier laying on the ground defeated that represents Lennox’s defeat in this situation. He doesn’t do defeat well. He sits down on this one and Alexander comes back standing. Alexander thanks him, but Lennox stabs him in the back with his words as Alexander is turning to leave with the Lucy/ Charlotte knife 🔪 “as you failed Lucy”. He’s a soldier and he’s going to fight even when he’s down and bleeding. I honestly don’t think we’ve seen the last of Lennox. I think he will be back. I predict he will come trying to romance Augusta to see if he can take Leo away from Alexander some how that way. I think Charlotte and Alexander are going to team up to save both Augusta from ruin and Leo from Lennox’s gasp... Alexander didn’t view this as war but Lennox did...yup, I think he’ll be back....just predictions. If Lennox doesn’t come back for season 3, I do think it’s a storyline they will use if we get more seasons of Sanditon. 💘🌊🎯🎩👒
