the abridged is leagues better than the original and I _stand_ by that. They managed to make it yknow, a comedy at heart, but have genuine character development and have all the characters be flawed in some way, even if they're practically gods at the game. And yknow, cut out all the total _bullshit_ the original had.

I stg, I actually laughed during the official version because how rushed everything felt, but the fact that they made the main characters heartless bastards in this really highlights how attached they got to her when they actually break down over her.

I'm broken over here.

I saw the abridged version first and when I tried watching the original I couldn't last 10 minutes before I switched off because of how needlessly edgy and boring the characters were. I think its so much more emotional here because just like with the abridged series as a whole, the show actually makes you have feelings for the characters rather than just tell you that these characters are awesome and you should root for them like in the original. At the start of the abridged series you're made to dislike the characters because they're egotistical as****es, who theb go through actual character development, making the later relationships and emotional scenes a lot more believable because the audience themselves has come to like them. We see Kirito being a narcissistic jerk and Asuna a well hidden sociopath, but eventually they begin caring for each other and start making sacrifices for them and their friends, making their feelings for each other much more believable because the viewers have also gone from originally disliking them to actually rooting for them. The same thing happens in this episode with Yui, where they initially use her as a pawn, but are shown to genuinely enjoy her over time, acting like parents like when Asuna protects Yui, promising to kill Thinker herself or when Yui laughs and cheers in Kirito killing the monsters. Rather than Kirito and Asuna suddenly loving Yui like in the original, its a lot more believable seeing these very very flawed characters go from using Yui for selfish reasons to genuinely enjoying and caring about her -- like how the audience went from viewing Yui as something to just drive the plot forward to actually being a character we enjoy watching interact with other characters. This makes her death a lot more emotional since we ad the audience have also come to enjoy her presence, and believe in the relationship developed between Yui and Asuna and Kirito as a dysfunctional but nonetheless loving family.

This episode always stick with me for her VA talent. The crying, and then the outro moment between her and kirto feeling genuine, not to mention paired with that music really pulls in the feeling genuine intimacy between the 2 characters

@@Wicked_Gaming_ It's relatively small but The lead up to the joke stems from a natural flowing conversation where Yui unintentionally makes a reference to the Foreigner song "I wanna know what love is". When Asuna says "Goddamn Foreigner" in her mind it's a sarcastic admiration of that song in how it's so prevalent, but when Kirito quips "you mean the band right" it's a nod to Asuna's racism (as shown in the episode where they were examining that sword in the shop). It's a leadup that makes sense for Asuna because she often suppresses her own emotions (besides anger), it's a line that makes sense to Kirito because he is aware of Asuna's ingrained ignorance, and it makes sense from Kirito because he always has a witty jab to make at her expense. I just thought it was pretty neat how the characterization of Kirito and Asuna, their relationship, prior scenes, and how it all resulted from a naturally flowing conversation. It's a microcosm of how good the writing for this show is. (the abridged version to be clear!)
