Saving sansevierias

In this video I save some sansevierias (Dracaena trifasciata) that are not only bent and limp out of shape, but are infested with scale. I show you how I soap up the plant with my Seven Sages plant soap (with updates to see if they have returned/persisted). I then unspotted the plant, inspected the roots, and proceeded to propagate it by root division. I ended up with many pots of these and show you an update 4 months later.

Sansevierias are succulents, they need very little water. If yours are out in the rain, you probably never need to water them, the yellowing leaves are due to overwatering. Mine are indoors and only are watered every 2 or 3 weeks.

The large roots are rhizomes btw. The 'albino' growth was white because it was under the soil and hadn't been exposed to sunlight yet. When you say, "They cannot be over watered" I believe you mean, "Should not be over watered." Your English is very good, but I thought you might want to know the difference. 'Can not' means 'not able to.' 'Should not' means it's something you don't want to do. Apologies if you already knew the difference, I thought you might want to know. :)

I"m so terrified of killing my sansevierias that I very rarely water them unless they are bone dry, then they get a soaking and nothing more until dry again. I've lost a couple in the past, including a lovely Moonshine, just by overwatering. My tall ones are fine but if leaning a bit, they have a bamboo cane for support (not tied up in a bunch . . . ! ) I love how you can grow everything outside, so envious! Given how fast they grow for you, I'd probably have ditched the bendy yellow leaves, especially with scale. You're very kind to them :-) Beautiful!

My Sansevierias have been flopping and turned yellow and I thought it was caused by owerwatering. Today I noticed scales on the leaves! 😱 Found your video at the right time and I'm going to give them a good scrub with soap shortly! 😅 I'll also try propagating some leaf cuttings so that I'll get some pure green ones. Hey there, buddy! So, I guess you already know, but here, in Brazil, we call them swords: 'St. George's sword' - for the trifasc. and 'St. Barbara's sword' - for the varieg. And old ppl used to say that you need to have at least one pot with both of them, close to the main doors, to keep away bad spirits and mean ppl. Tc.

For me sansevierias are arid plants there supposed to be dry all the time so I suggest the medium must be easily drain the best mixture to use is lots of pumice loam soil and more rice hull thats it... no need to use aroid mixtures which contains coco cubes and husk this mix priducea mealy bugs and aphids in the soil using this mixture will take the potting mix stay wet for a long period of time. That causes of pests...

Although I do not have as many plants as you, I like to know or know about them. Regardless of the language, I always try to find information. A lot of Sansevierias do have orange roots. ;-) And yes, the only way to keep the variegation is by root division. Leaf cuttings always revert to the original form. I'd really like to know why the leaves flop over as well. The shoots are white because they could not reach the light; they will turn green when exposed to light (gradually!). I'd be worried about the water getting in between the leaves of the Sansevierias and causing stem rot.

When they don't have time to dry out in between watering days started flopping they need to be very very dry if it's outside at least once a month watering good luck with that it's a beautiful plant just needs to a little bit TLC

Hello. I’m new to the plant world about 2 weeks in and am learning a lot. I have a pothos that was in a 6” pot that was badly root bounded where there were about 2 inches of soil on the top and nothing below that but kind of thick roots wrapped tightly around and long. I tried repotting into an 8” pot and then realized I may need to repot it into a bigger size? Do I need to trim the roots? If I add the cuttings that are rooted, do I need to cut the roots that were root bounded to make room for the new roots from the cuttings to establish? Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experiences.
@onlyplants
@onlyplants 3 года назад
Ooo dont cut the roots. I would move it to a pot one size up. Maybe I can suggest for you to put the cuttings in their own new pot? If it is bushy you are going for, cut the plant back and it will produce multiple branches from the nodes down below. You may have to do this a few times over the span of a few months to achieve a desired bushy look.

Hi Sean, nice video as always ☺️ Just wanted to let you know that your big non variegated Sansevieria is Jaboa, not Trifasciata 🙂 I don't know why they flop over but I assume it's just because they are older leaves and their fibers get weaker. My aunt has an enormous one that is older than me and it's always tied because it does the same thing. However when you're dealing with scale please be careful not to throw the ones you take off of the plant near the soil or the healthy leaves because it will spread. Aaand regarding watering, I think they get the yellow leaves because they are being overwatered. Sansevierias can take really long periods without water so I'd rather recommend that you keep them indoors or at least sheltered so they don't get rained on, and water them like every two weeks or so. Anyway, your videos are always so satisfying to watch, keep it up and take care ☺️

i'm sorry if I sounded patronizing or if you've known about this, but I have mild concern seeing you potting up your sanse in pure coco chips, right from the plastic packaging... because local coco chips sold here (jakarta) are mostly untreated and contains high level of tannin (even some sellers don't know this). tannin is known to hinder root growth and can slow down plant growth. it needs to be washed and soaked repeatedly until the water runs clear before use. but you can also let the rain do that for you by placing the plant outdoor like what you do with your sanse. but for indoor plants, this might not a good idea.
@onlyplants
@onlyplants 3 года назад

Please help me understand what are the scabs on the leaves when you are saying the leaves are clean, no more scale, and then I see several scabs ? What are those ? My plants have the same appearance & I can't get a clear understanding or solid answer. Mostly I hear them written off as "mechanical damage" when the plants I personally grew from babies had no reason to be damaged; especially "mechanically". Because I've had scale on my Dracena Sansevierias I say they're related to the scale. Look at the propagated plants at 17;15-17:50 both plants have a brown scab and the leaf on the far left @ 17:47 has obvious damage. What is that ? My plants were still growing with scale; it took awhile before it was obviously affecting their development. Please help me have a healthy snake plant, they are one of my favorites. Thank you so much.
@onlyplants
@onlyplants 3 года назад
Hello, that is most definitely scale, or damage from scale. Unfortunately after you remove scale, the damage they leave behind is a permanent scar on the plant. I’ve seen a lot of sansevierias in Singapore grown with 100% perfect leaves... I believe they must have been grown commercially with very excellent pest control. I have not seen many sansevierias here in Indonesia with perfect leaves unfortunately. I recommend for you treat the plant regularly to prevent pests, and also help it build a good immune system to deter pests (and fungi/bacteria) by giving it good care and some nutrients via fertiliser. Good luck 😀

What kind of bar of soap did you use? Was it a normal normal hand soap? Or a specific product? Also after you washed the soap off wouldn't the scales go back in the soil and climb back up?
@onlyplants
@onlyplants 2 года назад
I have a video titled “insecticidal bar soap” that shares the ingredient of the soap. Scale usually dont live in the soil, usually its ants that bring them up to the leaves.

Would you cut off the struggling ones & repot the new growth?
@onlyplants
@onlyplants Месяц назад
Depends on how hard they are struggling 😀 sansevierias live their lives on the rhizomes, new growth will push out there as long as its kept healthy.

Hey ...so I'm dealing with sort of a problem I was hoping you could help me out with... the middle of one of my sansevieria leaves is completely black but other parts of the leaf looks good AND I wasn't sure what to do about it, should I just propagate or leave it alone ?
@onlyplants
@onlyplants 10 месяцев назад
You can cut off that leaf as sometimes its a disease that may spread. You can propagate the tip of the leaf even if the middle has rotted.

@@onlyplants thanks man appreciate it . Also how long should I wait for the cut to heal and then plant the leaf?

I think they flop over because of too much sun exposure. I think there is a thin film that is enamel like on the outside of the leaves. (this enamel gives the leaves its strength to stand up) If there is too much sun, then this film melts/dissolves and can no longer stand up straight. I can't remember where I heard this from, but possible solution for ya

Why does my sansevieria have brown tips also how often water?
@onlyplants
@onlyplants 2 года назад
Could be sign of over or underwatering. Depending on your light conditions and potting media used… do let it go completely dry between watering. But When you do water make sure its very saturated with water.

thank you for the video kak sean, now I can help my mom sansevieria forest 😂. Can I propagate from the bulb (bonggol)? or should I leave it alone?
@onlyplants
@onlyplants 3 года назад
If its already too full on the pot you can divide it up 😀
@tellyyosephine
@tellyyosephine 3 года назад
@@onlyplants some of the roots already out from the pot because its so big, so I was thinking to cut it up some of the root to propagate but I afraid it won't grow.

How to fix a sansevieria moonshine that has fungus?
@onlyplants
@onlyplants 3 года назад
i would spray it down with fungicide. Also fertilize lightly to build its immune system against future infections
