My dad did it the opposite way, he got stationed in West Germany and bought a blown up Ford. For the price of a used engine and a case of beer, he got his friends to swap the engine under a tree, then he traveled around Europe whenever he got Liberty.

GAVIN!!! The best thing I learned in life is to know when to say "I need help", it doesn't matter what it is, if you think you need help with something or don't know how to do a thing the first step is asking for help, don't be ashamed my dude and if anyone makes you feel bad for just simply asking for help then that is not the kind of person you want to be around my friend. Good luck with the build.

Yup! Underestimating a project is almost universal, especially when you’re not super experienced (notice I didn’t say skilled; you level of skill is irrelevant). Get someone with more experience to help. Here’s a kicker, though, you then have to listen to that person; they may have a completely different way of doing things. You don’t have to just do it their way but listen to the experience and knowledge and compare against how you thought it was going to go.

@@alexandrecouture2462 It can sometimes be the hardest thing to do (ask me how I know) but knowing when to say to yourself "I can't do this alone, I need help" is the best quality I can think of in times like what Gavin is going through.

But for some reason, getting a Subaru Legacy transmission out of the car was way more difficult with two men helping than getting it back in by myself. So when asking for help, choose wisely who you ask (if you have options). Because bad communication usually don't make things happen any smoother. Granted, things can happen more quickly (with broken and scratched up parts) when you have "help". I always try to think ahead and if possible, make (or buy, if I happen to have any money) the necessary special tools for doing things solo. Often times the stuff is quite makeshift...

In the 1970s and 80s I pulled at least half a dozen 2002 motors -- pull it out the top either with or without the trans attached -- without the trans is easier -- and all you need is an engine hoist and a helper.

Hi Casey! I would just like to say I love watching your videos with Genius Garage and some of the early stories of you when you were highschool and just started getting into racing. That being said, I also blame you for the fact that I ended up buying a 1986 Toyota MR2 former street legal SSCA race car as my first car about a month ago lol. Guy who sold me it was an older gentleman who was super cool and very knowledgeable (he’s been a racer for probably over 40 years at this point and owns a restoration shop) and I plan on using this car to help launch me into a successful career in the car industry. Certainly can’t say it was my smartest choice but I love the car and so far everyone who’s seen it gets a big smile on their face. Keep doing what you do to inspire more young people like myself!

Very interesting day for all I guess... My Monday started with hauling a 1 owner 1989 Lamborghini Countach (Black on White factory interior) into the dealership, while said owner followed in his Diablo 😎 ...Never thought I'd ever hear a customer recommend using their Diablo to Jumpstart their Countach either (To reposition for easier loading, after trying/draining 4 jump packs)...till today 😁

Casey - aren't those the same blocks that where used in the TAG BMW Formula 1 engines,..? Y'know, the ones where the BMW engineers would leave the blocks outdoors to weather, including using certain bodily fluids to aide in the process, and then wind up the boost for 1500hp in qualifying.

Good job "Dad" Casey. Lesson 1) If you buy yourself a project car you have to make it leave the property within a reasonable numbers of months/years. Lesson 2) Even if your 150 pounds dripping wet you can't make a deal and the let someone ghost you and screw you out of your hard earned money. Need to call 10 times a day. Show up at random times looking for them. And if need be bring a couple large friends to help them find their wallet. Lesson 3) If you tear apart a car you better be dam sure you got like 17X the amount of time you think you need to use that space. Things will fight you to come apart. Parts that required days or weeks to get will break. The realization of how far off your time and money estimates for this project are is crushing. But we have all been there.

I think he means “shooting pool with a rope “. I spent a career learning infinitely more from my failures than my triumphs. Later in your life you’ll be crunching ibuprofen with a long shot of bourbon while shaking your head and laughing about this day. Trust me. Thumbs up Gavin. Now I must start cutting the floor out of my “super solid” 68 C10. Lol.

Hey im probably shooting my self in the foot because. I can probably make money off this but i cant afford the parts. But the new audi diesels have an electric turbo . They go for about $1000 All u would need to add one to car is a lithium battery 48v and and EV alternator and u have reliable 10pounds boost.
