Scarifying.. One of the best things you can do to your lawn... especially if done regularly.... If you leave it several years though your lawn WILL go down hill, and fast.. Then it will thin, then weeds and moss can creep in..
Be sure to scarify twice a year (spring and autumn) for best results.
Here are 3 different properties I attended in one day.
They all needed scarifying, some more so than others.. but ultimately this leads to a better lawn that maintains a good condition.

Hi Shaun, Another great video, it’s amazing to see how much comes out of these lawns Gonna start doing my late fathers lawn in April give it a cut and then scarify to be honest I think it had got too much for him

Another great Job Shaun. I loved the 3rd lawn and garden layout you didnt half get some thatch and moss out. As said before these lawns will pop once the heat hits them.

Hi. It does need to be fairly short.. I usually aim for about 1.5 inches or under

Hi it's not always needed when done regular it'll usually recover in about 6 weeks

Hi you could buy something that makes light work like a camon scarifier . Or better still hire one as a on off until you've got it under control. Then a mid range machine like the stihl rl 540 will be more than enough. In fact I'd think most petrol ones would be fine. Even hyundai do one on amazon which looks substantial

oh yes, several times, let thing I want is a customer looking shocked.. thankfully the reactions are usually pretty good once Ive told them :)

Hi Shaun, i did a full renovation of my back lawn last Autumn and i am wondering should i scaryfy this Spring i have cut the lawn several times already and the grass looks free of thatch and moss. Will i damage the new lawn if i scaryfy? I will be overseeding when weather is more settled. Thank you. Hope you are well 🙏☔😎👍

Hi if it's looking good I would just leave it be. However I would also say a very light scarify before seeding will be needed just to put some grooves into the soil for the seeds

Hi Shaun. Was the wrong type of seed used for reseeding in the third property? How do you know what type of seed to buy?

Hi imnot sure.. The lady's Gardener did that.. It could be but equally the grass is a little stresses as it's struggled since it was put down... Usually if you just go a general seed it's good enough for most lawns and has a good mix of several varieties

I’ve hand aerated my lawn, how long does it take for the holes to fill in? Should I wait until they are fully filled before overseeeding? Thanks. Really appreciate the videos.

Hi... They usually close on their own in time. Often just a few weeks.. . Feel free to seed regardless 😊😊

What would you do with a lawn where the moss like thick like a carpet. Ive tried scarifying but there still so much left. Would you try ro get rid of it all in one go or leave it and do more in the autumn.

Hi.. if its literally mos (and zero grass in the moss), may as well rake it all out and reseed... but if you scarify and there are some grasses in there you can scarify till you've reached soil and exposed some.. let it thicken up over the season, then do it again in autumn, and let out thicken up again.. in time you should get on top.. but that is a longer way.. all comes down to personal choice and budget

My scarifier has 2 different attachments- metal blades or thin wires - which would you recommend to use ?

Hi.. so the spokes.wires are there for light scarifying, and do an ok job if you use it say 3 times a year... when thatch is heavier and deeper the blades will make much quicker work of it/a little more aggressive

Hi.. I always start on setting 1 to get a feel for the job.. If it's perfectly cutting through the thatch then all good.. But if not I'll drop it to number 2 etc.. As the blades get blunter I'm naturally dropping it down anyway.. At the minute I'm on setting 3.. So gonna change my blades over to new ones today

I always make sure it's fairly short.. Personally I'm happy to scarify with up to about 1.5 inches in length

Hi Shaun Love your videos and content and watch with keen interest. After years of battling weeds on my front lawn have admitted defeat and have killed it off. Reseeding and top dressing next week. One weed type is still looking green and not brown like the rest of the lawn. Is this possible or does Roundup have a kryptonite? Thanks keep up the good work mate

Hi.. So just for a reminder.. Avoid seeding for a minimum of 2 weeks after roundup has been applied.. I usually wait 3 weeks.. So I'd five it that period of time to see how lal th plant life has been affected.. Sometimes you are waiting a while to see it die off

Hi I think you'll find prices will vary a lot and on who does it.. It's likely no more than 2 hours work thought to give some idea

@@LawnRight Thank you shuan, appreciated. I did lawn mowing job last week, never been done since last September. It was a jungle. My mower died on me after 2h mowing and strimming. Strimmer dies as well. Think it needs scsrification big time since its all fescue and thatch is a 4 inch thick. Think it needs a skip to remove all that waste :) Thank you

HELP! Need your advice please 🙏. Planning on doing a budget restoration of my lawn this week. Mow Spring Tine Rake (scarify) Aerate (with shoe spikes) Overseed Top Dress I need to know how much top soil I should use to top dress for 40m². Hope you can advise 🙏.

Around 5 bags (200L) of topsoil would be enough.

Start with about 5 bags and see how it goes but you may need a couple more roughly.. The plan looks good 😊

@@VeganRichPT hi 40... But depends how it goes down.. It really can vary a lot... When I'm using b and q compost 1 bag can go a long way when using my compost spreader.. Topsoil won't go as far sojust be ready for extras if needed

Great job shaun,is overseeding necessary now after that or are you happy that you just want to thin out the grass essentially which will naturally allow the grass to grow back?wheras a more aggressive scarifying would mean the need to overseed?thanks

Hi. It all depends what the lawn looks like. You are absolutely right on both points. in most cases the lawn will happily recover in about 6 weeks.. Seeding will thicken the lawn in a faster time but certainly not always needed

Something quite oddly therapeutic watching your videos Shaun. Im about to buy a scarifier and plan on a full renovation. Got fescue and its a nightmare. Might kill it off autumn and just put a rye lawn down so its less maintenance.

Thanks mate. I do like dwarf rye for the lack of thatch but the downside is it won't self repair but that's not a major problem

Hi.. No.. in most cases the lawn will happily recover in about 6 weeks.. Seeding will thicken the lawn in a faster time but certainly not needed unless you are aiming for a very high end look

Hi yes.. There is a farm in the area that recycles green waste.. A full van is about £15 so it's pretty good

@@LawnRight Yeah, i noticed on my last visit 2 weeks ago that the lawn has been treated for moss, my customer isn't bothered about anything like that unfortunately and you can see its full of moss and weeds, but some are happy with just the grass mowed. You look after a few lawns of my regular customers :)
