Schuberth E2 helmet review

With the original E1, based on the venerable C3 Pro, Schuberth basically invented the flip-adventure helmet. The C4 was not around long enough to merit such a treatment, but the C5 has already proven itself to be a worthy successor to the C3, and so now Schuberth has used it as the basis for its new E2.
The reality is that the E2 is just the C5 with an adjustable peak, and different mouldings for the chin, brow and exhaust vents. The other truth is that these vents may look more aggressive, but there is no suggestion that they flow any more air on the E2 than they do on the C5, which means that the only meaningful difference between the two models is the peak.
Now if you want to know more about the C5, you can click here to go to our review and video about the C5, but the essentials are as follows. The helmet meets the new safety standard ECE 22-06. It comes with a Grade 1 optical quality external visor, a drop-down sun visor, multi-port venting, and a state-of-the-art integrated Sena comms. facility. For the first time ever on a Schuberth, the internal liners can be changed to allow a custom fit, albeit only in three of the six sizes. There is also a cost for the different liners, although not if you buy the helmet from Motolegends.
And so, as we have stated, the only real difference between the C5 and the E2 is the peak. The peak is not the most robust, but it incorporates a lot of slots and vents so we assume that Schuberth has used their in-house wind tunnel to test it for stability.
We are not totally convinced that most adventure riders really benefit from a peaked helmet, but more to the point many adventure bike riders have convinced themselves that they do. And if you want to combine an adventure helmet with all the acknowledged benefits of a flip helmet, the options are few. And if you want to be able to custom fit such a helmet the options are fewer still. In fact, there is only one helmet; and this is it.
But the way we see it, when you buy an E2 you are not making a commitment to a peak. And that is because you can remove the peak, and turn the E2 back into a C5. All you do is use the bungs to cover the holes in the outer visor where the peak attaches to the helmet.
The C5 is proving itself to be an excellent helmet. You will pay just £20/£30 extra for the peak, and so we would suggest that the E2 promises excellent value given the enhanced versatility that it offers.

As a relatively new rider (~2 years) I’ve come to helmet design with a fresh set of eyes (but many other experiences-50s age group, retired 30-year Marine). I’ve used and traveled with both fixed and modular helmet designs. I find my “flip lid”, modular helmet allows ample field of vision while getting on my bike, manipulating equipment, refueling, securing “wear-bag”, etc. Great points about noise reduction, etc. I live in a hot and very humid environment so the ability to uncover my face, get some air, and hydrate during brief stops is a necessity. Looking forward to the E2. I am currently in a Shoei Neotec 2 with Sena Mesh comms system. I’ve ordered overseas from you in the past-very happy. My goal would be to come to the UK for a proper helmet fitting. No other retailer talks about helmet and equipment fitting with such fervor as your establishment.

Fab review on the E2 and the similarities with the C5 and it is refreshing to see you smiling Chris. Thanks.

Loved my e1 great helmet , my c5 is good but has a major flaw , the visor mechanism is poor and the detents very weak , the visor will just slam shut at 30mph , it won’t stay open even in the cracked position , you also have to click it fully closed . This e2 has the same visor and visor fittings , such a shame as it will render a complete pain off road . However the c5 is a good road lid but lacks the visibility appeture for off road , schuberth have gone the easy cheap route here and these problems combined with trying to get them remedied have now put me off the brand .

When the visor gets dusty, and I am riding riding towards the sun, believe me, the effect is very positive. Furthermore, my visor has been saved from hitting little branches innumerous times.

NOTHING beats a peak when riding directly into the sun. A simple tilt of the head to completely block the sun… priceless. I bet you wouldn’t say the sun visors in a car are pointless…?

The peak is not only about aesthetics and sunshade, but it also has a huge impact on the airflow riding an adventure bike (on one with a high windshield). General airflow, bugs, rain all get directed over the helmet. For some oof us, this may make a huge functional difference.
@Motolegends
@Motolegends Год назад
Can’t see that this is correct. The screen on an adventure bike may do what you are describing, but the peak was never designed to divert air anywhere. It disrupts rather than aids the airflow, which is why they create extra noise, move about at speed, and can put strain on the rider’s neck. A peak is primarily there to help block out the sun. A peak interrupts the airflow; it doesn’t purposely direct it anywhere. And certainly I have never read any claim from any helmet manufacturer that suggests that the peak has a beneficial effect on the flow of air. CP

@@Motolegends I guess, I am going to try it out, then. I’ve been riding a lot with GSA and open visor. I’ve noticed that while visor is down, I get lots of wind right onto visor, with bugs all over as a measure. When I open visor up and just let sunhades down, I get no bugs at all and no air-disturbance either. It’s all calm. Now, truth be told I have an aftermarket larger windshield on da biiig-GSA, but I suspect the peak is gonna do exactly what I’ve devised as a hypothesis. I’ll need to give it a try and maybe Schuberth can add one more bullet-point to their marketing material. 😊

I am commuting in east-west direction, always into the sun. I have swapped helmets for one with a peak, to increase safety. Electrical tape on a visor can work only temporarily.

I bought one, and it was fine, until it rained. Then it was lethal. Water comes down the centre of the visor, pools, and is then blown directly into your eyes if you open the vent to clear the visor. Shocking design from Schuberth. I took it back and got a neotec 3.

Beware, these helmets are very tight in the chin bar area. I wear a size Large and the helmet fits my head properly but the chin bar presses up against my chin and it's not comfortable. Also, these come pre-wired with headphones and it will difficult to fit a communication system you ready own. Also, the field of view is less than most ADV helmets and is on par with most road helmets.

I really love your gear videos. Do you have one where you go into more detail about why you steer away from more adventure style helmets? I am a bit inclined to agree with you from a personal feelings standpoint, but I do not have the knowledge or accumen as to say why. I do mostly do commuting, but once my gear is sorted I will be doing more long distance touring. Doing the Trans American Trail and trail/dirt road systems in the American south during the hot and humid summers here.

I love the adventure tribe peak look, but mostly I prefer the wide field-of-view and airflow of ADV helmets. It doesn’t look like the E2 quite matches the Arai or Shoei adventure lids in those metrics.

@@MagnumMuscle1000 it’s comparable to the view out of a Shoei Neotec II. Not great, not terrible.I’ve got a Neotec II, Hornet X2, and an Aria XD4. The Arai weighs the least and flows the most air through the helmet. The Shoei’s are a little quieter and heavier. I like the visor mechanism on the Shoei’s better than ANY other helmet I have ever tried. You can put it where you want it and it stays put. That doesn’t seem like a big deal till you need to crack the seal on the visor a tiny bit to get more air and clear the fogging. The Arai is ok in that regard but the adjustment is coarser feeling.

Thanks for the video, Chris. There’s been quite a bit of chatter on Advrider about the E2 having a tight/ unadjustable chin strap system. Is the chin strap & anti-rolll off strap system different from the C3/ C5’s?

The peak is must for the low sun horizon in winter. As are sun visors in a car.
@Motolegends
@Motolegends Год назад
Yes, which is why a drop-down sun visor is so important. Looking down at the tank so that you can block out the sun, by contrast, is just dangerous. CP
@bsidethecside2283
@bsidethecside2283 Год назад
Agreed the drop down visor is great, but when there’s road dirt on your visor, you’re better off blocking the light from hitting in the first place. My commute sends me into the morning sun in places and there’s much better contrast in the shadows with the peak, compared to the visor on my E1. The peak needs to be set med or low, but works for me 😊

Hi, I wonder if the E2 has the same soft and nice lining inside of the C5? Second question, since the visor is the same on both the C5 and the E2, can I buy the C5 and then the peak for the E2 and fit it on the C5? Cheers

@Motolegends Chris, any word yet on the price of a C5 Carbon? Is there a way you can divulge just an approximate, ‘in the region of’ indication so I don’t actually have a heart attack? 😆 It’s a gorgeous thing, mostly handmade by the look of it, so I’m thinking north of £1,500? 🤔

I completely disagree with this narrative that most people ride bikes and have certain items of clothing, or bike accessories, to fit an image. I have an ADV, and do so because I want a comfortable UPRIGHT position when commuting and when I go green laning. I want AUXILARY LIGHTS because I'm sensible and want to be seen, and therefore safer. The same reason I wear a Helite Turtle, and have fitted a louder exhaust so that someone on their phone might stand a chance of hearing me next to them. I have BOOTS with BUCKLES because they provide superior protection to basic ankle protection, for when I'm off-road or if I sandwich my leg between the bike and a hard place (car or otherwise), and they're waterproof and also easy to remove. I have a JACKET with lots of AIR FLOW because I want to stay cool. I want a FLIPUP HELMET with PEAK for the same reason I want a helmet with built in sun visor, and a flip up helmet is great for air flow (when flipped up), noise reduction, and safety. Perhaps you could change your narrative so that anyone with these above choices, do so because they're more safety conscious rather than conforming to a pre-determined image... Who's to say that this narrative (my given example) is any more right or wrong that the one given in this video. Other than that, great video (I guess)? Would've been nice to see some real life use and reviews, rather than pure speculation on the lids performance.

Does the E2 actually have an extended chin bar compared with the C5? My one issue with that helmet is my chin is pushed right up against the inside which seems like it would be a bad time in a crash. A bit more chin room might make Schuberth viable for me!
@Motolegends
@Motolegends Год назад
No it’s the same chin bar. A larger moulding on the C3 Pro’s chin bar made it look like it had an extended nose, but it was actually just a C3 Pro with a bit of plastic on the front. Same for the C5 and its E2 derivative. CC

If you get in a crash and the paramedics need to get the helmet off of you to save your life - god help you with full-face lid. With a modular helmet - all they need to do is lift the chin bar.
