Libertarian calls in to propose eliminating property tax on people's first residence to promote home sovereignty. The Majority Report crew ask where people are supposed to get money to buy a home in the first place as many do not have the means. Sam explains why the caller's idea is a subsidiary goal to the decommodification of housing and the other avenues of increasing home security like rent control.

Getting rid of property tax and decommodifying things that way as opposed to just saying like you can't be a landlord or maybe like rent control. I meant there's a lot of ways to get to those sort of Top Line goals that you're talking about, which I think are admirable goals and ones I would support, but I don't know the way you're going about it just seems to be a little bit more complicated than it needs to be. And I think like oh home ownership is not even when the context of home of living in a home sort of it shouldn't be the primary goal, the primary goal should be living in a place where you feel secure and is a decent place, but I would say that there are a lot of people who don't feel secure right now. Especially with rent prices...

You are absolutely right. I'm also from Colorado and I was the same brand of "libertarian" at one time, but as my pool of information grew I matured out of it. I'd bet the caller is a native of Colorado, because there is usually a pretty clear distinction between someone from Colorado who considers themselves libertarian and someone from another state who is a libertarian. You can see the semantics battle pretty clearly when you see arguments about whether our governor Polis is libertarian or not, and there are lots of those arguments to be found.

He's very clearly using libertarian in the European sense where it is more closely aligned with socialism. He said he generally leans towards socialist and he made a comment about Emma saying the right stole the term "libertarian" (which they absolutely did). I don't even agree with this person, but just because you don't know the historical context doesn't make this dumb. I think it's weird to use the that descriptor in America without qualifying at the start, but it seems like he's trying to take the word back.

Hes just a left libertarian, and not a far right lunatic libertarian. Most left libertarians don't describe themself as that, they just say socialist, because the other libertarians stole the term due to their remarkable whackiness. This guy sounded like a standard leftist to me with a few odd particular points brought up first. His specific policy prescriptions are kind of weird (rents go up in part due to property tax, adding a huge property tax increase to large landlords would just increase rent...), but I don't think there is anything in particular hed really disagree with a typical socialist on. I'd also describe myself as a libertarian, because my moral and political prescriptions come from a place of valuing liberty of every individual, but normal ass socialist is probably just a better term and set of policy prescriptions

@schumanhuman
@schumanhuman 2 года назад
The guy is coming close to the Georgist/left libertarian positiion, understanding land monopoly is a big issue, but by excluding primary residence from land tax he is creating a massive and unfair distortion. Someone owning a massive home tax free in Silicon valley has a massive privilege over someone owning a smaller one in rural Alabama. We should tax all land at or near to market rental value, that will push prices down and make houses and rents as cheap as they can be without creating a privilege for some over others.
@treedillinger5801
@treedillinger5801 2 года назад
@@schumanhuman if property taxes were at rental levels…why would anybody ever even consider buying a home?? You’d be pushing the value to zero from the perspective of a homeowner [because I can get the same house for the same monthly fee: without a down payment, mortgage, interest, homeowners insurance etc.] Homes would have value only to landlords…and rents would skyrocket. Rental values don’t just exist in nature: they’re derived from other realities of life. It would be not only impractical, but impossible to permanently couple property taxes to rental values. You’d basically have to own a home and rent it out, and use the rental income to rent another house 🤯. Then property values would derive from ROI (investors expect to recoup initial investment in 18 months and then start to profit). Again: homes would be worth exactly zero to residential homeowners.

We have been in our house since 2011 and have spent less than 6 grand in that time. We replaced everything that needed to when we moved in, financed that with the mortgage and I have fixed a few things myself that would have cost a ton in labor. It's much better. I lived in multiple apartments where the landlord or owner of the property would just come in my apartment to make sure I was living to their standards.
@1369Stiles
@1369Stiles 2 года назад
@@f_youtubecensorshipf_nazis and? i dont necessarily have a bad experience with my house either. it needs a few things done that im not in a financial position to fix. THATS my point. if i had gotten an apartment, those things would not be a concern for me. as to the living standards.......i dont know what kind of a life you lead, but how i live my life would literally not change if i had an apartment. i dont party; i dont have people coming and going all the time. i dont currently have a pet, but if i did it would only be a single cat. im not loud, so i dont need the space for that. so im not sure what kind of pain in the ass you are that you need to have a house instead of an apartment. i would also point out that not all apartments are bad and have bad owners, just as not all houses are great experiences. hell, i would rather deal with a nosy landlord than an hoa.

I think his main point is that houses should be affordable and that these companies shouldn't be able to buy up everything and charge these insane rents. But I think having nice socialized housing that is affordable, even if they don't necessarily owned outright, is kind of the solution. Then still having private housing for those that want to buy their own homes.

I think the caller is on the right track, but veering off a bit. If capital gains and RE income tax on investment properties (not primary residence) were so high that it would render investment properties unprofitable, investors would sell, dropping the prices of properties. The resulting tax revenue could be used to create non-profit gov lease programs for those who do not choose to purchase their homes. The above mentioned taxes can only be applied with the non-profit program in place, lest landlords pass the tax costs to renters.

The problem is not property tax. The problem is the insane cost of living especially in a place like Manhattan NY. No city should be allowed to transform into a place where only the rich can survive. Rent needs to be regulated. No one should have to spend more than 25 percent of their net income on rent.

Sam. In San Francisco, there is a constant stream of residential building, primarily high end high-rises. It's not that we don't have enough housing, it's that we don't have enough affordable housing. Yes, the government cuts deals to developers - if they create a certain number of affordable units, they get to build a higher building, for example. However, "affordable" is $120,000 per year, and one or two units in a midsize building in no way takes the edge off the housing problem. The real issue is that developers have no stake in the community and make deals with politicians to continue the golden money flow. *The fact is, there are enough rich people in this area that can bear the high cost of housing, so they keep building for those people.* Nobody is thinking about a healthy society being able to accommodate middle and working class people, again, in preference for expanding the capital reserves for the few.

The funny thing is most issues could be resolved by increasing corporate taxes and closing loopholes that MNCs habitually exploit. You can lower income, property taxes, so much with it. NewsCorpse in Australia has paid no taxes for four years now, and with the profit they post each yeah, every single Australian could have been given $36k, each year, if they were taxed only ~5%.
