Segway: An overpriced mall cop ride

It was bound to happen, and it just happened. Last June, Segway's president, Ms. Judy Cai, announced that the company was utterly ceasing the Segway PT production, or as it was initially named, the Segway HT, for "Human Transporter." Some believed that it would revolutionize urban mobility, make the last-mile transportation more efficient, redesign cities, and other such high aspirations. But you know how this show usually goes. That glorified scooter that mall guards and tourists ended up rocking around some cities is officially on its road to extinction.
What happened to Segway.

most people need to treat 3d printers the same way. The 3d printer went on sale in 1986 and nothing has changed about how they work or their vast shortcomings when compared to traditional mass production methods. The price is also pretty much the same. To be fair the usage of 3d printers in manufacturing went from a percentage of .0001 to .001 in 25 years.

To me, the Segway has a critical flaw, it is difficult to carry stuff on it. Everything else it is competing against can carry at least a limited amount with varying degrees of ease beyond what's on your back. And pretty much everything it was competing against is considerably cheaper.
@jdraven0890
@jdraven0890 3 года назад
Indeed, and then it takes up more space than those other things, would be more difficult to securely store/park away from home, and is far more expensive then all the other options.
@johndemeritt3460
@johndemeritt3460 3 года назад
Oh, the flaws are far greater than just carrying stuff. I used to live in Denton, Texas. Had I gotten a job in the area after getting a PhD, it would probably have been in Dallas. The Segway didn't have the range for me to make it to my job. And at its top speed, I'd have had to leave at 5 AM to make it to work by 9. Of course, there's the issue of weather. Summer in North Texas is NOT the time to ride a Segway. Neither is winter. Neither is spring. Thunderstorms, tornadoes, hail, and ice storms are not good conditions for Segways. And when your tires melt to the pavement if you come to a stop someplace in the summertime, you aren't gonna make it to work on time. The narrarator mentioned issues like laws, law enforcement, and accidents, but let's face it: this device was never meant to operate on I-35 -- which is likely to be stupid at the drop of a hat. And damned if people ain't droppin' hats EVERY DAMNED MINUTE somewhere on I-35! People trying to to 65 on 1/2 an inch of ice? I wouldn't take an M1A2 Abrams out in those conditions! Given all that, is it really any wonder people looked at the Segway and asked themselves "How is this supposed to address my transportation problems? How am I going to use it when it's my turn to take the kids to [insert type of practice] practice?" When I first heard about this device, I was working on a MS degree in Studies of the Future at University of Houston - Clear Lake. My first thought on hearing the hype was, "Well, there's a flop about to happen . . . ." Turns out I was right.
@davidegaruti2582

segway and every other electric transportation device has one glaring problem that will prevent it from reaching the consumer market : bicicles . it's that simple a bicicle is human powered , it doesn't need to get charged electrically , it just needs a WD-40 spray every couple of years , replacement of loose nuts and to refill the tires, for the rest it's way more convinient , cheap and secure (you can't be going too fast on a bicicle without realizing it , moslty because you're the engine ) than any overpriced electric device you might see on the market ...
@Vengir
@Vengir 3 года назад
@@davidegaruti2582 The bicycle also has one crucial flaw: it's human powered. How fast and how far you can go is limited by your fitness. And when you get there, you might be tired and sweaty.
@davidegaruti2582
@davidegaruti2582 3 года назад
@@Vengir well i see the bicicle going as fast as you're phisically fit as an advantage : you'll never go too fast without realizing it on a bicicle , It also helps with exercise it counts towards the 300 minutes of weekly exercise recommended by the US department of health ... If when you get there you're sweaty then you should prolly plan your routes better and get there at a more liesulrly pace , or use the gears better ... Also sport bike can go faster than many electric mobility tools and generally speaking make you feel that speed instead of it being just the push of a button ...

Segways are gyroscopically stabilized and reflexively stop. You can learn how to ride one in less than a minute. And even infirm and elderly people can easily ride comfortably one as long as they can stand. Whereas a bike or scooter takes real learning, practice, and stamina for a healthy active person. The gyroscopic self stabilization is also why it became popular with security and film crews. A police officer or security guard can aim a gun or taser steadily while in motion with one and even use both hands on their weapons. (You can find training videos of airport security pointing rifles and submachine guns while moving in sync with segways.) With film crews, camera operators can ride them for steady motion shots instead of having to set up and pay for a track or crane which are more time consuming, complex, and expensive.

The original Segway was $5,000 and could go 12mph. My electric unicycle (which is using the same self balancing technology as the Segway) Was under $1,500 and can go over 33mph. They're also much more portable.My first electric unicycle was actually made by ninebot (who owns Segway) that one only did 12mph, but was only a few hundred dollars....basically segway performance at a tenth of the cost and a small fraction of the size and weight. The original Segways were too expensive for what they did, but it wasn't a failure, it was just a stepping stone that progressed and evolved into something better. I have almost 2,500 miles on one of my wheels so far (and currently own two and an electric bike, if I owned one, it's mileage would be much higher) The technology is here and very real...the only thing holding it back really is the government and people's lack of knowledge about it.

I got to ride Segway some years back as part of a project. My main issue was the awkward posture which was very strainous and not at all relaxing. The large footprint of the base and wheel, the weight of the vehicle and general sense of limited options for mobility (although impressive techonology) also compounded the issues of cost and utility. It's simply too cumbersome at a ridiculous price point. I own a electric kick bike today and before that I used a non-electric one. It's easy to handle, store and it feels more intuitive and natural to control and integrate into street motion like carrying up/down a set of stairs or moving up/down a sidewalk. The issue of Segway is similar to the issue of wheelchairs I experienced with my handicapped grandmother; if your vehicle limits your mobility and natural pattern of movement you'll be uninspired to adopt it. My grandmother rarely went out because the city made it difficult to move about despite living somewhere that prioritize universal access. That speaks volumes of why Segway failed and why newer forms of micro-mobility has since pervailed and thrive.

To be fair, there's a lot of electric scooters now and segway-like devices. With advancements in batteries, I think we will see more of those. Is that a revolution - I'm not sure, but it is certainly is an evolutionary step, and some dinosaurs are bound to go extinct.

The funniest prediction I ever heard is when Segway was in the whisper phase, that someone gave an off-the-cuff remark that "the next revolution in transportation" sounded like it was more like a scooter.

I was at the Boxing Day Test at the MCG in 2011 when a Channel 9 cameraman on a Segway tripped over a spare helmet, while the players were warming up on the field before the start of the day's play. He broke some expensive equipment doing that, and the whole stadium laughed and watched the replay on the big screen over and over. I think that match was Tendulkar's final Test appearance in Melbourne.

One memory I have of the Segway was back in 2005 or so in Hawaii. It was 9:00pm or so on a week day and I was out running around the University of Hawaii (Manoa) campus. And if you live near there, you know the campus is basically fully-abandoned by like 7:00pm (no campus night life at all). As as I’m running around a mostly empty campus, members the Honolulu Police Department were out on their Segway units. There were maybe eight PD members there. They seemed to be practicing Segway maneuvers (empty campus, so it is a good place to practice). And as I was running past them, they are going past me in the opposite direction in a Flying-V formation (like they were Disney’s “The Mighty Ducks” or something). Members of the police riding down an empty campus road in the Flying-V. I laughed to myself, but also thought it was darn pretty cool. I’m a 90s kid. And what 90s kid wouldn’t want to practice the Flying-V on a Segway? Only thing better would to be to do so while also practicing the “Knuckle Puck”, lol.

What has to be recognised is how devices like this bring about other inventions and stimulate creativity. You have to look at the core components, functionality and of course such as software / controls etc It certainly DID just that and I look forward to seeing how tech advances re travel etc.👍

I remember when they first came out. They had a store in Chicago just west of Michigan Avenue, in a very pricey retail district. I thought that they were pretty cool until I got a look at the price tags. That was the end of my interest in Segway.

The Segway got killed by innovation and progression in last mile mobility: electric scooters, hoverboards, electric unicycles (EUC). All cheaper, easier to learn, better handling and better range.
@sidjtd

Technically wrong. Segway never caught steam without any of these even existing when the Segway first came on market.
@OneWheelMan

@@sidjtd And Segway didn't get killed when they first came to market either. Their main issue was the price. The average person isn't going to spend $5,000 for something that does 12mph.

the s and s plus both have a 360 degree turn radius and handle like a dream, and offer the same benefit of a hoverboard with a very good autobalancing function with 25+ miles of range. not to mention they're hands-free as well. electric unicycles for that price get you way less mileage and functionality.
@monowheeling
@monowheeling 3 года назад
@@snoopdoggthecertifiedg6777 just checked the specs: for ~$900, the s plus has a 330Wh battery and 12 mph top speed, whereas the V8 EUC has a 480Wh battery and 18 mph top speed. I also don't see how the EUC is less functional. It's for sure more difficult to learn though.

I found this on an ABC news website: Sept. 27, 2010- -- In a bizarre twist, James Heselden, owner of the company that makes the two-wheeled Segway personal transporter, died Sunday morning in a Segway-related mishap -- just before the scheduled release of a study suggesting injuries related to the vehicles may be on the rise. According to a witness report, Heselden, 62, apparently fell off a 30-foot cliff into a river while riding a Segway near his home in West Yorkshire, UK. Police found Heselden's body and a Segway personal transporter in the river. He was pronounced dead at the scene and foul play is not suspected, West Yorkshire Police told reporters.

I recall seeing a video of this bizarre performance art group. they were playing a number of equally bizarre homemade instruments and the video featured tiki torches and a ring of fire that burst up from the ground. they were wearing extremely long, hooded black robes and, as it turned out, were riding Segways like the last one shown in your video with the handlebars removed so you could control them with your knees. It made them look preternaturally tall and was deliciously spooky. The upshot was that they looked like they were gliding along without moving their feet. I'd Google up the link to the video but I have NO idea what search terms to use. that's a shame really, because I'd love to watch it again.

In the UK, if a vehicle has a motor you can't use it on the pavement (sidewalk), full stop (period) except for speed-restricted disability scooters and powered wheelchairs, so the Segway was always going to be a very tough sell in the UK if you had to use them on the roadway.
