Sellen is Ranni's Sister | Elden Ring Lore

There's also the fact that the name Sellen is just another spelling for the name Selene the name of the greek goddess of the Moon; the same moon that serves as the symbol of power of the Carian royal family.

Couldn't Sellen have been Rennala's sister instead? That would still make her a Carian princess, although a less important one and thus hardly referenced as such. If we were to assume she was Rennala's daughter we'd have to ask who the father is, because we know only of Radagon as Rennala's consort and took with him all their kids.

Hey this is a fun video! I'm inclined to suggest that she may have been Carian, but not necessarily Rennala's daughter. It's a cool theory though and I enjoyed your explanation 👍

Extremely interesting idea. Your main piece of evidence for the theory seems to be that "Carian weed" could be taken to mean "weed of Carian origin." The original Japanese here is カーリアの禍根 (ka-ria no kakon). The word 禍根 means "root of evil" or "source of trouble." I don't really know how naturally カーリアの禍根 could be used to mean "source of evil from Caria," but it is a construction that definitely could mean "source of evil FOR Caria." And, for what it's worth, that's how I read Iji's line in English when I first played. I assumed he meant: we can eradicate a source of problems that have plagued Caria. This dovetails with Sellen's line "the toothless pedantry of the Carian royal family can rot for all I care." There's definitely some animosity there. Slightly tangential, but something I've never seen anyone discuss: I've always assumed that Sellen is from Sellia. (I think this is probably because I got teleported to Caelid early in the game and accidentally ran into Sellia and got murked by wizards. So when I ran into Sellen I was like "Oh, she must be from Sellia.") We know she has at least some familiarity with Sellia, as she gets Lusat's key from a Sellian sorcerer. All that said, Sellen is my favorite character and I love this lore proposal! Thanks!

I came looking for this because of the towers in the three sisters area… Many joke that Seluvius is secretly a girl, but I think the ruins where his secret room is was possibly Sellen’s tower destroyed upon her exile/escape/disappearance. His tower sits just a bit off the main rise from the other two towers and the ruins. It would also make sense, where better to hide her body than the basement of what was her own tower?

Never knew Iji remarked on Sellen and with those lines it definitely lends a lot of credence to this theory. Secret princess Sellen is pretty dope, she was the first spell mentor i found in my playthrough. It's great to learn cause knowledge is power

Interesting theory. It certainly does make sense that Sellen is Carian royalty. But a sister to Ranni? Not so sure about that. I think sister to Rennala is more likely. Or maybe not even that closely related. But with ER, who knows?

I would argue that, for those whose allegiance doesn't lie with the Erdtree, their fate is tied to another authority. if you're goal is to be one with the stars, then it is the stars that determine your fate, not the erdtree. You could argue that anyone who's alligence is tied to the moon and/or stars will have their fate tied to the moon and or stars. This is why if you owe allegience to Ranni and her quest, your fate is NOT to bring about a new golden age, but to usher in the age of the dark moon. In short, your ALLEGENCE binds you to your fate. Kinda profound imo

Seluvis strikes me as someone who aided in Sellen's capture rather than her hiding.

i think if she was a carian princess Thops wouldve mentioned that. and when you bring her primal glintstone to her new body at seluvis' hidden chamber she states: "You've helped me fill a new body, once again." . My bet is that Seluvis helped her overtake the carian princess for trading to get the youngest carian princess for his hidden chamber. And Sellen is not killed by the Carians because she posseses the body of a carian princess. And we help Sellen posses the youngest carian princess after her old body was in danger. We never even get to see Sellens old body. None of the Sellens has her skintone and none of the Sellens has her necklace. Maybe they couldnt do it to Ranni because of her Demi-God Status but that is one thing Seluvis is going for too...three sisters.

I like it, I was always curious about a closer connection between Sellen and Sellia the town of Sorcery, the Legendary sorcerer that was trapped nearby, the type of night (?) magic that originates there, and the underground map directly below it. edit: just read a comment on who her father could be if she's Ranni's sister, what if shes Rennala's sister?

Ngl, i think with this theory we are getting closer to the truth, especially if we consider a possibility that Sellen is carian, and that the three sisters tower have been renamed. With this in mind i too consider that Sellen is one of the three sisters, however i think that those sister aren't referring to the generation of Ranni (as she was the first female heir, so she should be older than Sellen, and i don't think this is the case) , but more to the one of Rennala. Because if we consider that, Ranni might have inherited her tower from her mother, Sellen tower might have been substituted to the one of Selivus, and Renna the snow witch (Ranni's teacher) might instead be Ranni's Aunt and Rennala's sister, which would make even more sense, at least to me.

Say your talk with Crunchy on his channel and had to check you out. Honestly a fantastic theory, maybe a stretch but I can't think of anything anything in game that says it certainly not the case. I'm with Mythos on that it's a lot more likely that Sellen is Rennalla's sister, and an estranged and deranged aunt to Ranni rather than being her sister. Sellen being of Rennalla's generation, but being oppositional to making Caria royalty (distracts from important stuff, like turning people into glinstone) adds a lot of weight behind the disdain she has towards the "Royal family". It also matches well with her having the clout to just show up and take the academy away from Rennalla. Yeah it's kinda writing fanfic, but I think I like how the story reads this way,

I do not think that Sellen is Rannis sister. Bcs she would be a demigod. So I think that she was a aunt, cousin or something like that from Rennalas family. On the original Sellen painting in Debate parlour, the woman depicted there is very simmiliar to Rennala ( face and hair) so maybe rennalas sister or relative.

As a Carian princess Sellen's fate is tied with the stars and therefore she can't be killed until Radhan is killed, which seems to provide a bonus incentive for Jerren to hold the festival. All princesses have rises in the lands between and I think the Heretical rise is Sellen's. It's close to Castle Sol and a wandering Moseleum that does the same attach as those graven schools (the sorcerer heads ball that Sellen turns in to). So the soulless demigod in that moseleum is some kind of a primieval current enjoyer or perhaps a demigod stepchild of Caria descent. Miquella has ties to castle sol. And he/she/they are able to traverse in to the dream world and maybe even the spirit world as death and sleep are closely associated with each other in esoteric knowledge. I wouldnt be surprised if Miquella was in cahoots with the Carian family after the golden order disillusioned him. Anyways sorry for the tangent! Everythi g could be related tho! As for Sellen, she is also known as the graven witch. I believe those balls of sorcerer heads are entirely her thing. Sellen sounds similar to Sellia and I wonder if she mixed the sorcerer heads with one of those mimic tear balls to create seeds of stars. Miquella might just be someone who explored every single aspect of power in the lands between. His lore would be better understood with somw knowledge of alchemy (sol niger), hermeticism and other occult and esoteric mystery school ideas.

Honestly awesome, Sellen is my favorite side character by far and i never realized she was a Carian, tbh my guess would be is that the Carians are more along the lines a clan of sorts with perhaps many lines within it, even those who are not heirs in some royal families are princesses. It would be amazing if we got more info on Sellen or even more content with her in the future as the whole "seeds of the stars" leaves some room for more.

Makes sense! If Radahn enabled Sellen's immortality, could Sellia be the link between Radahn and Sellen, both standing against Ranni's claim to the Carian crown? Ranni and Rykard against the greater will, Radahn and Sellen defending the Golden Order (which legitimized sorceries) and Radagon's will.

What is Seluvis helped Sellen disguise a third sister as Sellen, then the Carians had Jerren assassinate the third instead. Sellen’s payment to Seluvis could have been Sellen’s Rise. The child that Rennala is trying to rebirth could have been the misidentified and murdered third Princess?

Sellen can't be Rennala's daughter, since that'd make her a demigod related to Marika/Radagon. She is Carian and most definitely a princess but not Ranni's sister. She also lacks the traditional naming system present in every demigod's name.

Selen is Rennala's sister. This is no secret. There are three towers north of Raya Lucaria called the "three sisters": 1. Renna's rise is the highest. Renna (The snow witch) is the eldest sister, and has the highest tower. 2. Rennala is the second sister and has the middle tower. but she became queen and left it for Ranni. 3. Selen is the third sister and has the third lowest tower. Selen is a fake name. After she was convicted, she gave her tower to her classmate Selivus in return for a favor: a doll body that could hide her. She named that doll body Selen after Selivus. We know this because: 1. The four main characters are named after George R. R. Martin. Namely: Godfrey, Radagon, Renala, Marika. 2. Renna starts with an R, just like Rennala. Even Ranni starts with an R. 3. Iji and item descriptions go to long length not to say her name. We don't know her real name. Iji does.

I’m gonna say no because of genetics, and the way the Carians name their children. If you look at Sellen she has absolutely zero features in common with Radagan, and very few with Renala. Radhan, Melenia, and Ranni (with her original body) all share some kind of feature with Radagan, their tall sizes and their red hair. Sellen shares none of them and Renala is (as far as we know) confirmed to only have had children with Radagan. Then there’s the name thing, all of Renala and Radagan’s children (that they had together) all have names starting with Rs. It could be a Carian tradition similar to how the Carians give their consorts a sword upon their marriage but even if that’s not the case I’d question it because it feels strange Sellen would be the only odd one out. And lastly I find it extremely hard to believe that something as important as this theory would be to the lore would never be explicitly said like Ranni being called the lunar princess, or being said to be Renala’s daughter multiple times.

It would make sense. The 3 towers for the Carian princesses were Seluvi's Rise, Renna's Rise and Ranni's Rise. I'll guess Sellen had to give her tower in exchange for his ''services'' for escaping and hiding her identity. That's certainly why she does not seems to like him. I'll guess the original name for Seluvis rise was Sellen's rise.

The video mostly explains Sellens ties to the Carians, but it is only as far being part of the Academy, but being part of Raya Lucaria doesn’t mean you are part of of the Carian Royal Family. Plus, Jerren is loyal to the Carian Royal Family, so it makes sense he has no qualms against Sellen and it can’t be coz of her being a graven witch, like he has no comment even about Rykard.

Nah man. Sellen isn't related to the Carians. Now dont get me wrong... There was a Carian Princess, probably at Castle Sol, likely named Renna. Probably Rennalas sister. But possibly also Ranni's sister... But it wasn't Sellen. What is for sure is Rennala had family before she had children with Radagon as even the earliest item descriptions refer to the Carians as the "Carian Royal Family" but we know Rennala was the founder of the house. First off... They look nothing alike. And secondly Sellen is being hunted by the Carian Royal Family. Jeeren serves the Carians. He serves both Redhan and Ranni at different points. So his loyalty is to the House. Not to any individual. Him hunting Sellen proves that she isn't part of the house. And finally, the Carians dont wear Glintstone crowns. Sellen does. Sellen cant die because her soul is locked in the primordial Glintstone not because she is a Carian. We know that Carians can die. Ranni is dead. That's kinda her whole thing. (Rennala is too but thats besides the point)

"To keep this video short" is a shit excuse imo. Just tell me everything there is to know, separate the video into parts or at least make extended editions of your videos. I hate this trend among lore tubers. Why should I lend you any believability if you withhold info. Even if it's menial, if it adds to your point/theory/topic it should be included.
