Thanks Edgar. In terms of vintage sound they both can sound very vintage when tweaked to do so. The P6 sounding more late 70's and the OB sounding more 80's

+Edgar Moreno maybe disliked by some guys who think that the Prophet-6 has so much more to offer than simple synth brass and simple pads shown here. Or by people who notice that great playing is there, but not necessarily interresting sounds? They sound very similar. If you listen carefully, you will notice that good playing is all about, this kind of playing would even sound great with a Korg Poly-800 for 200 $. So I understand the "thumbs down"

This is the most analog sounding demo of the Prophet 6 I could find on RU-vid and it's the reason I simply can't get a Rev 2. The Rev 2 sounds like a Minilogue next to this.

You can't have lived through the wasteland of 1985 and not be scarred, music went from great to unlistenable overnight, we went from Cyndi Lauper to Madonna, Billy Idol to Billy Ocean, Duran Duran to New Kids on the Block. There is a BIG difference between turning on the radio and hearing a Prophet 5 grinding out "She-Bop" to flipping it on and hearing a Korg M1 baring out trip like "open your heart" A Jupiter 8 blitzing on "Rio" to another M1 dinking it's way through "hangin' tough"

Thanks. Yes the Prophet 5 inspired a lot of the patches in my video. When the P6 comes from the factory it doesn't really sound much like a P5 which is why so many online demos just don't have that P5 sound. Also the range of sounds the P6 can produce is huge so it's takes a bit of time and patience in finding that little area of the P6's sound pallete and then tweaking away within that little spot.

Thanks for your kind replay. Yes i think it too. it´s hard to get the exsact sound. but it´s normal. diferent parts chips etc...but the typical P5 flavor or spirit is in the air. Nice yob thanks :-)

Exactly this, and esp the presets are bad and most are driven too hard in the VCO mixer section. To program it well as you no doubt know, backing off those osc levels really helps to warm/vintage up the Prophet 6.

Have you checked out Luke's other three patch sets for the P6? You REALLY need to have a listen to them, ideally in good headphones. His most recent (movie soundtrack patches) will totally blow your mind! :) And, if you dare, check out his four patch sets for the OB6. They're incredible too!

My favourites are his 2nd set (this video is his first set) & the 4th set (his most recent set ...movie soundtrack patches...they're incredible!). A modern take on the sound of the 80s, nicely done. In fact, as I own and love a Prophet 6, I can say it's much more versatile than this demo might suggest. I fooled a lot of fellow musicians into believing it has sampled waveforms as well. It's all up to your programming.

100% agree. I don't like that fizzy/edgy sound of the OB-6 at all. The Prophet 6 is way fuller, richer, warmer. And also a ton more versatile. Best sounding DSI synth by far.

Those sounds are great Luke! I've owned Prophets, Obies, Jupiters, Junos, Moogs, etc,etc, back in the day and this is the closest sound to the original P5 I've heard so far! I'm considering buying one since obviously I've sold all my vintage gear over the years including the P5, Pro One, OB-Xa/OB8-- all are synths I wish I'd kept including the JP8a but I didn't. So, I have a question: if I do end up getting the P6 or OB6 and midi them up to my Kronos 88 or Kurzweil will the P6 respond to the entire range of the keyboard like the other synths and if so should I just get the P6 Module? I never really understood why Dave didn't release the P6 in the standard 61 key size and the same with Tom O when he and Dave collaborated together on the OB6--it just seemed to me that it would of been a no brainer to introduce both as 61key synths but they didn't. So if I want to control them from my newer gear will they respond and be the same as a full sized keyboard? The only vintage gear I have left now is my Arp Oddy, Minimoog D, an ESQ1 and Obie DMX factory Midi. The rest of my gear is all newer stuff including VST Synths but I really like some of the "new" vintage reissue gear and after hearing your sounds it really makes me want the P6 however, I'm just not crazy about the smaller keyboard. Your sounds are definitely authentic pure '80s! I know because I was there and still love '80s synth pop! Great job on the programming -- that thing really does sound nearly identical to the old one from what I remember!

Thoughts on the new Rev2? Gotta admit, I'm pretty impressed with it's sound (and I didn't expect to be.. is it just the new gear placebo effect or does it sound a lot better than the P08?). Usually I don't care for DCO's, but on certain polys it really ads to the "vibe" of the keyboard (i.e. Junos and JX's), and I think the Rev2 is definitely one of those cases. Plus the full keyboard would be nice.. Torn between the 6 and the Rev2..

I had a rev 2 and sold it, hated the filter (really quite weak and only good in one or two spots for some kinda metalic sci fi sounds), all the other stuff (pads, bass, leads etc) sounded weak next to better analog synths. I got a prophet 6 and it's 100 x better, in filter and oscs. Now the rev2 is still a good keyboard/synth but it's not a great analog synthesizer, those curtis weak ass all in one chips just can't do what analog needs to do. Prophet 6 has no problem! It *is* a bit better than the 08 though (the rev2) but it still has all the same issues with the same crappy filter and paper thin DCOs. My JX-3P destroyed it (JX-3P almost sounded VCO next to the Rev 2 it was much more vibey and full sounding even without the chorus!), prophet 6 is the one you want.

I got a Rev2 and it has a very, very different sound to the P6, in retrospect I would have prefered the P6 because the oscillators and filter character are so dramatically different. What did you end up doing?

Luke Neptune really amazing patches man! Have a P6 myself and will definitely check these out. Trying to decide whether I should add the OB6, DM12, or System 8. I love the P6 pads but would really love something else covering pads from warm/lush and ambient/evolving? What would you suggest between the 3 polys?

Hmmmm, that's honestly kind of tough choice. I want to say go with a Prophet 6 if you can fork up the extra dough, but both instruments have their advantages/disadvantages. The P6 is only a 6 voice when compared to the 16 Voice Rev 2 and has a 4 octave key bed, but the Oscillators are Voltage-Controlled and still has features similar to the Rev 2 (i.e. variable pulse width for sawtooth, triangle, square). The Rev 2 however is bi-timbral, and allows you to stack two different patches on top of each other or split between two sounds while maintaining 8 voice polyphony. I will be dead honest about the Rev 2 though, I often run it through a chorus to achieve more lush sounds.

I wonder what people's opinions are... after dreaming for ages about a Prophet 8, I must admit I actually like the warmer tone of the 6 much better, VCOs considered and all. But I've noticed the 6 isn't very attacky. As in - when compared side by side with the new OB-6, the OB just has more grit to it, albeit a DCO-sounding kind of grit. What do you guys think? I can't tell if it's just me, or if the 6 really can't do muddy and gritty as well as the slightly more 'digital-sounding' OB-6.

P6 is very 'attacky', just program it that way. It's punchy as fuck (right up there with my Roland SH's and Juno 60) Also I think the OB-6 sounds grating, shrill, thin and harsh. not warm at all. People are impressed at first by the fizz/brightness but it just grates on me and gets samey. I have a prophet 6 (had rev2 which has a trash filter and weak oscs) and the Prophet 6 is hands down the best modern analog you can buy. Its warm, rich, punchy and flexible unlike the OB-6 which is a one trick pony. If you want 'grit' use digital, these are big boy analogs for analog sound, harsh can be done anywhere. You can never un-harshen the OB-6.

Self taught is the best way if you ever want to 'create' and have feeling. I've played the piano since age 10? (I'm near 40 now) and can play well, it took years to get good but the sooner you start, the better. Synths are a piece of piss to play well after you play the piano well.

I love the sounds you've created for the P6. I'll certainly get them, should I decide to buy this keyboard...which I'm really leaning toward doing. Currently have a Rev2, but this sounds fatter and creamier to me.

Yeah you're right. The P6 is a bit fatter and creamier than the Rev2. The Rev2 has it's advantages over the P6 too though with it's mod, split and layer capabilities. very cool. but at the beginning of Totos Africa i see you struggling with its 4 octaves. you cant reach the higher notes which is a damn shame if you ask me. DSI should have went for 5 octaves. they totally blew it with 4 octaves for keyboard players.

Really great patches and playing, Luke. I noticed your P6 is connected in Mono. I just received my P6 and this was something I have been pondering - the connection. I'm using it as a studio synth. Do you always use a Mono connection, or do you also use it in Stereo? Also whether you connect via Instrument or Line? Looking for some place to start so I can start implementing this into my music, and get the best recording possible. I'd greatly appreciate some advice. I'm actually using it in stereo in this vid (The other lead is grey and hard to spot). I sometimes use it in mono if i'm playing live for example. It's important to remember to put it in mono mode when running it mono and like wise stereo mode when running it in stereo. Press global, then 7, then global again to enter mono/stereo mode select.

Hey Luke! Super, super awesome patches! I was wondering if the super smooth pad you got going around 3:55 is even remotely possible on the Ob-6! Most of the time I lean towards ordering an OB-6, but that one patch you got there makes the P6's filter irresistible, ugh! Great work on these patches, both P6 and OB! :-)

Thank Joris :) I'm not sure if the OB6 can go as smooth as that. If i tried to replicate that patch on the OB6 it wouldn't sound as thick and dense and would have more of an open, airy quality.

Rightfully so, this synth is worth two of the ob-6, OB-6 has one nice sound and every other sound sounds like it. Prophet 6 has a vast range of sound and sounds warmer, deeper, richer. OB-6 sound just grates like fuck after you've heard it for a week.

@@quarkyzarky Many people would disagree with you, but it is a matter of taste. I would suggest that the OB-6 would not bother you as much when the OB-6 is sitting in a mix. But if you're doing more solo parts, then YMMV. 🙂

If you had to pick the OB6 or P6 to compliment a Juno60, what would it be?

The OB6 is the one that sounds furthest from the Juno 60 so i'd say the OB6 slightly edges it. But man, either of them would be great :)

Some of them yes and some of them no. The OB-6 very much has it's own sound (That OB sound). Which is great. But some of the more warm and organic type stuff is kind of exclusive to the Prophet 6 and Prophet 5.
