I hope Serena isn’t too tired after this match. She still seems to be having some trouble finishing the job, however, there are some encouraging signs. Her movement looks better than it did last year, and that serve is still firing. Let’s see how she does against Sakkari tomorrow.
Can we talk 💬 about how great it is to have the traditional camera angle view of the tennis 🎾 court. That fisheye lens angle in Lexington was an absolute nightmare to watch.
Not going to lie, I thought Rus had it in the third. Serena was playing in that panic state we've all come too familiar with. But that comeback switched kicked in and the realization that she was about to lose. Love to see it! Rus has the most intense serve motion. Like she is eyeing you down. 💀
It is surely amazing we still talk about her after 20 plus years of making her debut. I know others have tried to do it and have failed. Serena it was a treat to watch you. I saw the hunger and focus working in tandem. It is lonely at the top and the haters make us stronger, but like you said tennis is mental. Tie break last set 6-0. Well done gladiator .
She gave me a heart attack for a few games. I’m glad I’m not this emotionally invested in other players, otherwise my heart would give out...especially considering how most other top ranked players are out. 😂
Spiritualistic and that’s why your opinion is just that and irrelevant 23 grand slam champion right now she may be just one dimensional because she’s far from where she needs to be but we will see if she can get 24
Spiritualistic that’s your opinion I still feel like she can that’s my opinion doesn’t make either of us right but regardless if she does or not she’s done enough for women’s sports and been an ambassador for athletics she is a champion regardless
Spiritualistic your clearly a hater and there’s nothing more I need to address you about if you don’t know what she’s done than just know she’s done more than you have but continue to sit up in RU-vid comments hating the GOAT!! Lol its pathetic
Spiritualistic lol again we have nothing more to discuss hater 23x grand slam champ. I could careless how you see it and what you think because i know where that hate comes from. You come on RU-vid to personally bash her after a great match by two talented women and hide behind a V for Vendetta profile pic calling yourself spiritualistic and your so far from it incel!!!
@Spiritualistic Give it a rest dude. You're like a broken record and your obvious dislike for Serena is really BORING. No matter what you say, Serena is one of the greatest tennis players that's ever lived. Your repetitive yawn-inducing comments will NERVER change that fact. But keep on commenting if that's all you have.
If Serena continues playing like this against low ranking players, it will be very tough for her to win US open even though so many top players have withdraw.
@Jason toby It depends on Patrick to a great extent! I don't know what he's telling her, but I would seriously question my coach, if I've lost 4 finals, and am repeating the same mistakes, something isn't right, he's not correcting her mistakes, and that is a serious issue.
@@pauljohnson6019 Serena's movement is a major problem. It seems that she always tries to use her big serves to overpower her opponents. However, if someone return her serve well, or, she just has a bad day and cannot serve aces in her game, she will become panic and produce tones of unforced errors. It happened in the four finals she lose. She cannot compete with young players who run faster and strike harder than her. When she realizes that her serve doesn't work well, she lose her confidence very quickly.
Well, if you know in the past, she could have these matches in the beginning and won against higher ranked players with big nrs while she struggled with lower ranked players so this means nothing at all.
@@pauljohnson6019 I think Serena is the best female athelete. She's old but still play young generation in such high level, so I guess no one should be blamed for because age is such a crucial factor in athelete's career. Of course younger players can run faster and have less fatigue.
@@ismailzahid565 No since the new no-handshake policy has been put in place, Serena doesn't touch rackets. Instead, she expects her opponent to come to the net and be honored to listen to her say something about the match. Arantxa just didn't even bother with any of it. Serena is the one being petty and holier-than-thou by not simply touching rackets.
NNN if you tried to figure out why she does that you would understand. she has reduced lung capacity and she said if she got corona she wouldn’t know what would happen to her so she’s trying to stay extra careful. you don’t have to judge her for anything
Just imagine if she used/had more versatility. She can still depend on her serve for the most part, but she's breaking way less nowadays, and when she does break serve, she gets broken back. Of course she has so many great attributes, but slice, drop shot, attacking... would help her out a lot. Goat or not, she needs to approach some of her matches differently. Nowadays none of the big hitters/power players are out-hitting their opponents when it really matters, a older Serena needs a plan b
Wrong analysis. She has all those skills since 1998. She is the most versatile. She is just not in her element. She is in that panic Serena mode that always lose .
Ordinary PEOPLE "panic Serena mode", "not in her element", "she is the most versatile"? 🤐 My assessment sounds way better than yours. Instead of rushing to defend, comprehend first, I said "if she used/had more versatility". U saw that ONE drop shot that saved her? She used no slice or VARIETY in this match, all she did was slug it out for 3hrs with a lesser, was that her plan A or B, what was her strategy? She can't afford to do that.
Would love to see Serena get 24 slams, but i'm starting to think age is catching up with her. At one time, Serena would have hit an opponent like Rus off the back of the court.
Since her come back there are matches that she swept players off their feet easily. For me when it comes to Serena it's all mental these days. But the young guns now play her like they don't have anything to lose.
It shouldn't really matter, I mean if she doesn't, will Margaret Court be the greatest of all time? Lol, no one talked about her before Serena, Graf was always considered the greatest, but now just because Serena is the greatest they started talking about her... and yet Court is totally irrelevant by winning half of the titles in amateur era, she won 7 titles at Australian Open when field had only 32 players (which today is not even Premier Mandatory /5 !!!) ... so who cares about her, we can only discuss about where she is compared to Graf, Evert, Navratilova, Seles... the real champions.
Zad Rugar I agree!! When Serena was approaching 22 everything was about Graff, tying and surpassing her! Now that she has 23 Court magically reappears... 🤔 Boy I tell ya, it's as if some don't want to give her the credit she deserves! And when she gets to 24, guess what they will say she needs to get 25 to surpass Court! Watch!!
Goodjob today Arantxa. As a touring professional who has seen her ranking fall out of the top 100 and still has to worry about expenses (as in paying her coaches salary etc) slugging it out with Serena for 3 sets and not giving a single inch (or moan or roar) has to be a confidence booster toward better days. Hope so.
Not having a stadium roaring is allowing SERENA to focus. My goodness, she's playing a powerful lefty, but SERENA IS DOING EVERYTHING RIGHT! She is 39 , a Mom and STILL is WHIPPING A__ from good players half her age! #24+ on the WAY! SERENA undoubtedly is GOAT. This match w Rus was perfect for practice.
good observation, there were a few critical points when Serena drop shot or sliced the ball that disrupted the pattern for Rus. I don't think she utilizes her touch enough.
It’s the Lazy Serena mode. When she’s tired and doesn’t want to move much she hopes to hit you out the court. Unfortunately it makes her panic and impatient, throwing more UFEs. When she’s calm, using her angles and moving her feet, she plays better.
@@teethart9865 what are you guys talking about, serena's shots were not consistently aggressive enough to hit through rus, so idk how she relied on power if the power game was not there for her.
Get your popcorn 🍿ready. This years US Open is going to be fierce competition! Venus, Azerenka, Coco, Naomi, and of course Serena!! Wow great match. These US open series have great matches I hope they keep it without the fans in the audience. Serena is pulling her game together yes!
That I agree with and the US open has given Serena the most problems out of all the slams historically. I like Wimbledon and AO. But I like Us open as well.
Spiritualistic idk where your getting your information from because from what I see online, her management is reporting that she is competing. As far as competition. Venus is playing very well, Serena is getting her game together, Gauff can be a silent upset, not to mention the likes of Ashley Barty, Mugaruza, Azerenka and Andesscu. All seem pretty solid to me.
Serena played with her heart in this match! The heart of a champion! She also is not playing with full lung capacity so please forgive her for looking tired! She will find a way
Exactly! Serena is getting older I will always want her to win and I know father time is undefeated. It is something about Serena and Venus they give me this joy I feel when watching them play tennis and win. If she never wins another Grand Slam I have enjoyed watching her play this wonderful sport we call tennis.
@@MrCreative242 Yes sir I also want to see her win 2 more GS. Arthur Ashe was the reason I starting watching and loving tennis. I will be cheering for her doing this US Open I usually travel to the NYC to see her, Venus, and Taylor Townsend plays tennis but not this year. I pray there will be a cure for covid19.
Something seems dodgy about Patrick! I wonder, if he really wants her to win her opponents, or he is just using her- for the pay! Why would she struggle so much, and be off her game, then suddenly win the last set tie break- 7-0, lol! What if she hadn't been able to raise her game, and depend on her opponent, dropping off, and missing her shot, by whiskers?
@@pauljohnson6019 he's been sketch to me. Especially after the US Open fiasco. If I were Rena, I'd hire a new coach. One who doesn't want to be a celebrity.
Paul Johnson I don’t like the guy at all for her. He was good for a while. Serena is loyal to a fault, she hates changing her team. His ass would be gone if it’s me. I don’t see his use. Most people can clearly see where she struggles. He seems to be more interested in promoting his academy and his sunshades.
Serena's most powerful weapon is not as powerful as before. She needs this to improve her performance in service games. Rolling back the years, she had a lot of free points on serve. I just hope she will remain strong for the rest of her career.
Only Serena.. Great job senior to these young chicks! You showing them girl. These young players will test her will because they have youth and speed on their side. Also, they is no expectation for them to win. That takes the pressure off of them and leave it on Serena. Girl you will be fine. See where you went wrong and take it to them every time..Bless!
@@Manikandan-dl1sg Lol this is rewriting history....she's gotten better as she's gotten older but Serena used to always take credit away from the opponent and make all sorts of excuses, as well as threaten officials and umpires and opponents....
nah, serena losing to a lower seed is pretty normal now. roger still seem to be able to beat most of the current gen players, even the top ones like tsitsipas. of course thats before his surgery. after his surgery, things may change
@@kcazzzzz For the better or worse? That's the thing with Roger, you never know, until the last ball, he could play brilliant for 3 or 4 matches, then collapse suddenly, even in the finals, I wouldn't trust him, until he hits that winning shot, on match point, he tends to panic too quickly.
Honestly, i think Serena is using these matches to play the way she should have played in the finals she lost..The other players where able to rally more and move her around the court and Serena is now trying to move a lot more and Rally with the other players, so she hopefully doesn't choke or lose stamina in those last few matches. Not taking away Rus forehand was on fire, and she earnt all her points today. At least their is promising signs, in Serenas game as she hit a lot less errors than she did in Lexington
@@debdixon5800 Slams won: Serena - 23/74 (31%) Steffi - 22/54 (40.7%) Steffi is the only player in history to win all 4 slams and an Olympic gold in a single season (1988). She won a whopping 21 Slams in only 9 years (1987-1996) before winning her final one 3 years later. She also made 13 straight slam finals at one point and had FIVE 3+ Slam seasons. One Slam more for Serena simply isn't enough to overshadow all of Steffi's amazing accomplishments and records, the biggest of which is the 1988 Golden Slam - all four slams and the Olympic gold medal in the same year.
Unfortunately for Serena she is coming up short in tournaments. It is a lot to expect her to win the consecutive matches required to be champ. I know the field quality at the US Open is reduced but i still expect somebody to be to good for her on the day. In the last couple of years that has happened in the Final but i suspect it will happen earlier this time. We will soon find out and i for one am super excited to see how it all pans out.
Serena was saying she doesn't tap rackets at the end like most players because she doesn't want to take any chances with covid I think she was just letting rus know
Probably upset with the way she played! She did a Roger heart attack! I guess, Roger must have been watching this somewhere, and thinking, I'm glad I don't have to go through this- for now!
Serena needs to shorten points. Can't understand why she doesn't go up to the net more, and volley. Numerous doubles titles under her belt, yet she hangs around on the baseline, wasting energy. Several times in this match, Rus was way out of position, Serena could have run in and volleyed away the ball, but she stayed back and let the ball bounce, giving Rus time to get back into position.
These lower ranked players got a chance to get fit while top players took the time to rest ha! Serena's serve was firing but boy is she rusty against these players grinding it during the break...glad her served worked well. She's lost some power and hope she can get some power back because she's been playing some powerful players and yes she's fit but has lost power compared to many lower ranked players who got fit...
I love Serena but I must admit, she needs to take off & really work on fitness. These new girls are extremely fit, young & hungry. When she was on top it was her fitness!!! Lay off the social media stuff for awhile
It may be time for a new coach as well. She needs someone to expect more. Patrick is just allowing her to do the bare minimum. He made a name for himself & don't need her anymore. He's focusing on Gauff & Tsipasis
Coronavirus concerns. She has a preexisting condition (pulmonary embolism, or blood clots in the lungs). That’s why she doesn’t want to get too close to anyone during these tournaments (that’s what I read).
Andonis Moushis I was reading through the comments apparently Serena didn’t want to be in close contact whilst at the net or something. I thought the other girl was being rude. If Serena is so vigilant like that perhaps she shouldn’t be playing. Still tryin to work towards #24. Really??? Covid is worth that?? Omg. Retire and raise ya daughter. Her sister is the oldest player on tour I mean seriously we are in a new generation of women’s players. Give it up girls.
Serena is the GOAT but for her to win another grandslam baby girl gotta do more like she doesn't play like a champion 🏆 she starts playing and chasing down balls when she's desperate and that could make her or destroy her and with the talent we have in WTA her style won't win her anymore grandslam except she's extremely lucky and babygirl gotta lose some weight she looks tired after chasing balls. Serena was lucky to win this game because Rus gave her a fight
serena struggling to win against nobodies, in her prime she would have won this match 6-0 6-1... >_>. Also the spectators, 1 person per section is sending me.
She is out of shape love her. But she is doing to much weight training and not enough endurance/stamina training. As a personal trainer trust me I know. No volleys no charging the net....
omg people its covid 2020, there should be NO CONTACT OF ANY KIND. Players should just say "good match" and move on for jfc sake.....anywho Serena needed a 3 setter to get her ready for the long haul. This is such a strange time for world, let alone tennis.
Tus was so quick and not tired. Serena looked tired from the first point. I hope she’s ok. She is really starting to look old against these young whippersnappers. A win’s a win.
