Another interesting thing to note is that unlike the regular Outlander, the PHEV powertrain is not a Nissan powertrain at all. It is a derivative of the previous Outlander PHEV powertrain, therefore a Mitsubishi design, and it is not derived from Nissan's e-power. That's why the PHEV has a 2.4L engine, Nissan never made any 2.4L engines.

That is true. It's also an Atkinson cycle engine. To be honest, I think the 2.5 Petrol Nissan engine is not bad either.

Great review Sam. Just picked up our '23 Outlander PHEV. In BC, wait times are just a few months, I think (except for GT Trim). The RAV4 is sort of a "Vaporware" product, since it's not really available in any practical amount of time (in Canada, at least). I've driven the RAV4 Hybrid (and Sienna Hybrid) and the Outlander powertrain is far more refined (you really have to look at the dash to see if the gas motor is running). Of course the RAV4 Prime would be silent in electric mode (but it's not especially quick in electric mode), but if you really want to accelerate quickly in the Toyota, you're going to hear that rather noisy 2.5 litre engine (good motor, but not quiet). The Outlander is supremely refined when accelerating. The car mostly makes distant electric car whirring sounds under hard acceleration. Basically, it drives very much like a fully electric car. We achieved 7.3 Litres/100 on a highway run in -5C conditions (250 km), starting with a full charge, fully loaded, and with roof racks on. Passing power is pretty good (especially in Power mode). On the very steep grades, you can hear the gas motor rev up (but no vibration and much quieter than the Toyota would be). For sure the Toyota is more efficient on the highway, but it's not that big of a difference, and around town, they are both running mostly in electric mode. Also, the EPA rating for the Outlander is based on having 7 passengers inside, so it's somewhat pessimistic... In summary, I'm surprised at how good the Outlander PHEV is (given how small a company Mitsubishi is when compared to Toyota). Feels like a higher class of vehicle inside too (nice leather seats, very plush cabin).

You really don't want to look at the video that I plan to post next week of my 2023 Prime XSE Premium, as it's quite the opposite of what you think... I drive a Tesla, the Prime is for the wife. We traded in the 2022 Rav4 Hybrid Limited for the Prime (we lucked up and found one that was canceled by the person who ordered it). It is WAY quieter than the Hybrid, and nowhere near as loud under hard acceleration because, well, it's pretty darn fast. It moves effortlessly. I drive a Model S Plaid, and I've been enjoying the Prime because of just how great it is of a hybrid. This Mitsubishi does look great though.

Availability is 100% the difference maker here. In theory, you have PHEV Rav4s, Sportages, Sorentos, Santa Fes and Tucsons, but you can’t actually get any of them. You choices in the non-luxury SUV segment are this or an Escape PHEV-this has AWD, way more standard features, and a much nicer interior. This is also much cheaper than the Aviator, Grand Cherokee, Wrangler and XC40/XC60 PHEVs, all of which you also can’t get.

Kia PHEVs have Poor overall range on EV and I guess no heat pump on Kia PHEVs meaning in winters, the only way to heat up the car is via the GAS engine which will obviously need to be on for 10 minutes or first 2 miles at the very least. Defeats the purpose of EV to be honest and makes an already poor range, more poor. Dont forget you cannot pre-heat Kia PHEVs in the garage for this same reason as it means gas engine is on and carbon monoxide starts to fillup. What a pity. Also do not forget the horrendous wait time on Kia.

@@SamCarLegion Agreed. The US Tiguan has a 7 seater version however it is only available with a FWD. I was not convinced with the range on PH Outlander compared to the Rav4 Prime which has more range. This is a Nissan Rogue, "built on the same Renault-Nissan CMF-CD platform" that the Rogue is built upon. The good news is that it uses a Mitsubishi drivetrain, rather than the reliability nightmare that the Renault-Nissan system with its Jatco CVT has become famous for. The bad news is that its so-called alleged "DC Fast Charging" system is CHAdeMO -- which is currently evaporating from charging stations all over the United States. Also on the bad news side is the onboard AC charger, which is rated at just 3.3 kilowatts -- just about as slow as AC charging can possibly get. I wouldn't be recommending this kind of "obsolete DC charging" and "slow AC charging" to anyone.
@lotharledgerd7946
@lotharledgerd7946 Год назад
CHAdeMO may be rare in the USA and many countries but it can do vehicle to grid or home. Given the instability in the world, a car that can power a house (with the right inverter/charger) is a consideration. Additionally, for those of us who have solar, we could potentially use it as a home battery, instead of paying upwards of $10k (AUD) as a separate cost. Given the battery is only 20kWh and most people would only use probably half that in a day, 3.3kW is enough for it to replenish in a few hours from solar in daytime or overnight from the grid. Electric cars have such huge batteries, that they need fast chargers, that is not the case here. The battery is designed to cover local trips, while the petrol gives the range needed for longer trips. So all these apparent short-comings are either irrelevant in practice or depending on where you live, CHAdeMO could actually be a feature.
@rapide12345
@rapide12345 Год назад
Actually many people don't know that Mitsubishi has been using JATCO CVT's since the 90's and that every car in their line-up today with a CVT is sourced from JATCO, even the Lancer/Lancer SportBack, Mirage/Mirage G4, the old Outlander/Outlander Sport, and the Eclipse Cross, all of those that I've mentioned has a JATCO sourced CVT and all of them don't have the issues that Nissan's have, yes their is still some that fails but even some Toyota CVT's fails as well.

I don't think the Outlander is going to make the RAV4 Prime RIP anytime soon, the RAV4 is still faster, both in hybrid and electric mode, and the RAV4 has more range whether we are talking about EV-only range or Hybrid range, it has less running costs as well. I think where the outlander wins over the RAV4 is that the interior feels a little bit more premium than the RAV4 and it is offered with a 3rd row, apart from that the RAV4 is better at being a PHEV than the outlander but not by a lot, the outlander is still an awesome PHEV.

The RAV4 is faster on the straight, has more range and a better MPG. But as an overall car, the Outlander wins it, it has a better AWD System, better handling, it's AWD System is rear biased, a lot more comfortable, has a better semi-aniline leather compared to the RAV4 which on hot days feels sticky, has way more luxurious interior, has more features, DC Fast Charging, a 3rd row, massaging seats, better digital instrument cluster, a way quieter interior, looks a ton better (subjective), the MiPilot assist on the Outlander is one of the best, built in Japan, tri zone climate control, rear sun shades, better quality cameras, a heat pump, and the Outlander feels more solid. WLTP rates the Outlanders EV Range at 87KM or 54 miles also Outlander PHEV owners can get around 35MPG when the battery is depleted which is a lot more than EPA's rating, the Outlander can get to 60 in around 6.5 seconds which is still really quick.

@@akhere07 You get 2 years for free but then yeah, it's 99 bucks a year. I do not love it either. Even if it was the same money, I'd rather them just fold into the cost of the vehicle. Absolutely bonkers to me that car companies would choose to point out that they're nickel and diming you. But Mitsu is definitely not alone, basically every major carmaker either has a version of it or are switching to one soon.

I noticed at 14:26 you said that the RAV4 prime gas and electric gets a certain amount of miles but when you explain the outlander you only said how much it gets for the gas part you didn’t include the electric part like you did the RAV four prime. In other words, you only gave the RAV4 prime combine miles amount, but you didn’t do that for the outlander. Is there a reason for that or was it just a mistake? It’s very important to people who are watching.
