In this episode, we continue making progress by setting our valve spring installed heights, installing our oil pump billet gears, and modifying our timing chain tensioners. The Cobra head V10 is coming together.
While we wait for other parts to arrive, we decided to finally do the highly requested walk-around of the Lincoln Mark VIIIs (that’s right, there’s two of them).
Enjoy!

09:38 - Oil Pump Gear Replacement
10:23 - Timing Chain Tensioner Modifications
13:18 - Super Clean Lincoln Mark VIII Walkaround
17:40 - Manual Swapped Lincoln Mark VIII

Loved the walk arounds, love the engine build. You two are very smart amazing kids. Years ago I built a corsair motor for a pipe buggy. Put Nissan Maxima port fuel injection on it with a escort throttle body, Chrysler turbo, gm 4.3 distributor. That was lots of fun. Keep up the great work and have fun!

Always loved the Mark viii platform. Awesome sleeper cars and you can find them for next to nothing. I have a teksid block out of one of these cars waiting to get built. Picked it up for $30 because some one didnt know what they had. You guys keep up the good work. Can't wait to hear that v10 fire up!

Heroic work! Big into Mark 8 back in the day.. Amazing getting 27MPG on the highway back in 93! There was a bigger brother, the Navigator DOHC 5.4 which was a taller deck/Longer stroke block but only 8 cylinders. The V10 I believe took the Long Stroke 5.4 block and added two more cylinders which gave it 6.8L. That V10 balance shaft in the drivers side head is very wierd. The 5.4 heads/cams interchange with the 4.6 mark 8/Cobra mustang version. Ford learned the value of gasoline washing the backside of intake valves. The Modular DOHC heads used independent Primary and Secondary intake runners, but only the backside of the primary intake valve is washed w/gasoline. The secondary intake valve gets pretty dirty after 50K miles, the reason why the coyote went with a single intake runner (BIG) for both intake valves with a single injector hitting both valves.

Holy crap. That mark8 is so sick. I’ll bet That thing would be an amazing drift car. Long wheelbase is a plus. Great build on both cars.

You guys are schooling me on the DOHC modular. I've wondered about a Mark VIII with proper springs instead of air suspension; sort of an upscale Mustang. Keep the vids coming!

Not the modular MKVIII, but my old friend's dad had a 90 MKVII LSC SE, all black with the black wheels, a T56 Tremec, and a 351w based 408 stroker, forged crank, rods, pistons, huge TrickFlow aluminum heads and intake, everything ported and polished, and a Procharger 😅 It just looked like a stock LSC, stock wheels (good tires), stock air suspension, but made a conservative 600+ on pump gas and was daily driven lol..... I absolutely loved that thing, moreso even than his 93 LX with a widebody kit he had for years (this was early to mid 00s) or his 98 Mercury Mountaineer that also had a built 5L and Vortech supercharged 😂 dude loved his fast Fords as he used to say

It would be safer to just do a new valve seat job to move the valve seat face into the head or get crower to make a smaller install height valve spring instead of removing material from a surface that is protecting the head surface from the valve spring as it will not take much for the valve spring to destroy the head once the seal surface has busted due to fatigue this is a known problem on the aussie ford barra turbo 6cyl

I'm super jealous of your diy bushings in the manual swapped mark 8. As the owner of a 1993 5.0 HO Thunderbird w/ 3:73s, my rear suspension is almost identical in layout. Do you have a video on how to make the suspension and subframe bushing molds or could you possibly sell the molds. I'd definitely be interested as I have spent a small fortune on getting every bushing for the rear in poly except for the subframe and the rear diff mount.

I am very interested in seeing a video on how you made the bushings for your Mark VIII. Also, the Explorer stubs for a 31 spline upgrade is brilliant. Never would have thought of that. They are identical left and right, correct?
@biy_buildityourself
@biy_buildityourself Год назад
I still have to make bushings for the front suspension so maybe I'll make a small DIY when I get to those! As far as the stubs, yes, left and right are the same. Only downside of using explorer stubs is that you give up ABS. Those didn't have the ABS ring on the inner stubs like the mk8s did. I had to rig up some adaptor ring to add the rings to my stubs but then I ran into issues of clearance with the actual sensor. If you're not running abs, then it's not a problem.

Grafting heads together by welding them around is a terrible idea. The heads will crack in a very short time because they carry huge stresses, and their main reinforcement is the connection between the water-oil channels and the pins. In your project there is unwelded. The heads will crack quickly and worse, you will probably damage the block. Each head bolt presses it against the block with a force of about 120 tons. You have a joint there on these very screws, which will cause them to be pushed apart when the screws are tightened - like a wedge in wood. The material adhering to the weld will be thermally worked out very quickly and will crack because it is heterogeneous. You can weld the camshafts, they will work. Camshaft supports too, but it won't work with the heads. It would be faster and safer to make a new cad design by scanning these heads with a laser and producing them from a single piece of aluminum. In a moment, you'll run into the cost of machining these welded heads anyway, it's a waste of money. In addition, you did not take into account that the longer the head, the greater the tendency to expand along the length, and the engine block is cast iron. These materials have different thermal expansion. Simply in the world sooner or later such a welded head will turn out of banana. There is an engine called VenturiMotori VMsystem, it has separate (from 4 to 6) heads for each cylinder and each of them is screwed on washers. Each head on this engine is self-contained. It has a separate oil artery and a separate water artery. These are heads on pushrods with a camshaft in the engine block. In the form in which you presented it, the correct operation of this engine is impossible. Really, I advise you well, make new homogeneous heads, do not play with grafting two heads into one using a welding machine. It really won't work the way you imagined it to.

I am also using the mt82 for my V10. Did you use any sort of slip joint or was it fine because the car is IRS? I have been thinking of using a guibo fitting on my diff to hopefully ease any shock loads on the gear box and diff.
@biy_buildityourself
@biy_buildityourself Год назад
Yup, it’s a single piece driveshaft with a slip joint towards the rear flange. No roughness or weird vibrations so far, even with the poly bushings.

The spacer keeps the chain from getting too much slack when there is a loss of oil pressure and deleting the ratchet prevents the chain from being locked in an over tight condition. WONDER RACING sells a kit for it and it's detailed in the book "How to Build Max-Performance 4.6-Liter Ford Engines". A few forum posts on it too. Some recommend just grinding the last few teeth off the ratchet, but we felt that the spacer and ratchet are redundant.

I really wish people would stop using polyurethane bushings. They are just a gel and they cold flow and squeak. To switch to manual on a Mark VIII just use a Thunderbird SC setup and hydraulic cylinder for the clutch. For me it's delrin/aluminum bushings or rubber, no poly ever.

It's a shame you keep saying you need to add to the spring height. You actually need a thinner shim to increase installed height. You seem to be good with the lathe, why didn't you just cut down the ones you had? Then you wouldn't be so concerned about financially recovering from this😂😂😂
