Good morning Mr. Cheaney. thank you for continuing to upload and make videos, personally they have inspired me a lot, since the death of my mother working on the ranch and watching almost all your videos, they have made me go ahead, I already made my first bit, tool stamps, many things BUT WHAT I LIKED THE MOST, WAS A PAIR OF SPURS WHICH I CALLED FRANKENSTEIN, and I liked them very much. and I also made spurs straps for them, thanks to you, your patience and your love for this work Mr. Bruce. I would like to ask you a favor. I want to know how to make a LEATHER CRUPPER for my mules. if you can consider making a video i would really appreciate it. and it would be very helpful to me. Mr. Cheaney. I really appreciate it. God bless you and your family. greetings from Sonora Mex

Nerves of steel! I'd have to scribe a stitch line! That machine makes a beautiful stitch and it's easy to see you've done it a time or two. ;) I sure enjoy your videos--thank you for taking the time to make them. Hope all is well over there in Gainesville. Keep 'em coming! God Bless, my friend!

I just got my Leather Cobbler Sewing Machine from Amazon on Monday! They say it's a game changer👍. Now all I have to do is get it out of the box, clean all the dirt and grease off of it (like they say to do), put it together (they said it was simple, I sure hope so!), and have a wooden base made (that takes the place of the tripod). Needless to say, it's still in the box. And I wanted it so bad! Really, I still do. Now I just dont know what to do first to get started? I'm 62, just retired, and starting out leathercrafting. It's hard on my hands stitching leather by hand, even with the wooden pony I got that holds my project. Please, wish me luck. I really am excited. Just nervous. You make it look so smooth and easy. Thank you for the timely video!! P.S. Mine has a hand crank instead of a foot pedal. They said it was like an early version of a simple Singer Sewing Machine. Very simple....

I noticed that you did a back stitch at the start. I think you did that because its easier to compress the layers, correct? I'm going to start doing the same..duh..never thought of that until now. Thank you sir.
@cheaneysaddles
@cheaneysaddles 3 года назад
The main reason I like to back stitch is that it really locks the stitching so it will not unravel. Thanks!

@@cheaneysaddles Yes sir, got that and I do the same, but I always started as close to the hardware as I could get. Your method is much better. Thanks again for great videos.

real leather workers saddle stitch by hand
@cheaneysaddles
@cheaneysaddles 3 года назад
They also make their own hand sewing tread.
@calholli

They even breed their own cows and raise them with only wheat that they grow themselves; and they have to finish the hides themselves in their on tanning factory that they built by hand-- or are they really "real leather workers"? I think not.

Beautiful work , the tensile behind the inner wallet thread is phenomenal so I can only imagine the strength that has... but b4 I invest in a machine, cant wear and tear lead to a full separation vs a saddle stitch

Bruce, I love your work! I've been working with leather about 10 years and still learn new every day. You sewed down one side of the keeper, how do YOU sew the other side?
@cheaneysaddles

I use 4 ounce saddle tacks and a loop iron to fasten the other side. Thank you for watching and commenting!

Bruce hello been a long time. I was at your place when you worked out of your porch. I have a question about the motor on your stitcher. I noticed you didn't have to use your hand to reverse. I have a Juki 2000 pro and want to upgrade the motor. Thank you in advance. Also, your machine sure beats your Dad's Landis 16. I'm the person who went with you to his shop so you could sew a fender. Great video thank you I use a cobra 4 but have stopped using it as it leaves unsightly foot tracks in the leather. I stitch mainly sheaths . Do you have any advise on that could help maybe a video would be great on this topic.
@cheaneysaddles

You should be able to back of the foot pressure with the adjustment on the top side of the machine. A bigger pressure foot may also help.

THANK YOU. I dropped pressure back to lighten and it lifts the work up when i tightened just enough to stop this it it Marks the work.

Bruce, I was curious why you didn't sew all the way to the end of the second side? (not a saddle maker) And, what do you do about the marks the foot made on the leather?
@cheaneysaddles

Yes the pressure foot does leave tracks... I tuck the un-sewn portion and tack the loop at the end the wet and shape the loop.

You can buy a cheap, hand crank "Chinese cobbler machine" for $100 on ebay, that can do this stitch. I've seen them as low as $85 sometimes. The price seems to change a lot.
