How do the Seydel Symphony 16 hole chromatic harmonica and the 12 hole "48" orchestra tuned model compare? Which might you choose, and why.
Both have exquisite pedigree...cast aluminum covers with flare at back to project sound, stainless reeds, aluminum comb, redesigned and superior mouthpiece assembly with bottom up mouthpiece screws, top warranty (See Kettlewell's video series reviews on both harps) superb parts availability and manufacturing quality by #1 Seydel.
Both are customized, fitted with Kettlewell Frictionless Mouthpiece SLIDERS, and Kettlewell ERGO buttons. Slider provides friction free and saliva free movement to new note hole positions and relaxed embouchure, while ERGO button provides ergonomic feel to the button at all angles of attack.
The difference between standard C Solo tuning on a 16 holer and the orchestra tuned 12 is in the video. A couple of pieces of masking tape make it clear.

Interesting mouthpiece invention... I have the Saxony and the Volcany in Orchestral tuning - Love my Seydel chromatics!

Very nicely presented and thank you for clearing up "orchestra tuning" for me. I'm a diatonic blues player and picked up a Suzuki 16 hole Chromatix. Learning it very slowly and enjoying it too. It's demanding that I back off on the aggressive draws and blows. Thanks again.

Is there any difference between polished and non-polished reeds? Coz I know in 16 are non polished and 12 is with polished....is it louder,? Easier to controle? Sound warmer? Anything?? Thank you in advance

This is not really a proper 16 vs 12 comparison. Please consider also the following: 1. The 16 comes with either a trapezoid mouthpiece (standard) or the halfmoon mouthpiece. The 12 comes with a halfmoon mouthpiece only. No option available. 2. The 16 comes with 2 sliders: Standard (big holes) and professional (small holes). The standard slider is WAY easier to play for a beginner and is louder and easier to bend notes. The slider operation feels very nice. The 12 comes only with the pro slider. No option possible. Harder to play, but better volume control. 3. The 12 has the option of installing a spring (just like the 16) if the magnet is not needed, but the tension is high. 4. The 12 gets a stuck slider very easily when not cleaned every day. Careful lubrication helps a lot. 5. Note that the holes are farther apart than a Suzuki, Kongcheng Lyra or Hohner CX12 Jazz. The Seydel mouthpiece has also a bigger radius than the other brands. To me that's more work and feels less good in the mouth, but that's up to taste... I own both of these and he is right when saying it does not get any better than this for the money. The 16 with green plastic comb does require less warm-up and you can see the moisture inside the comb when holding against the light. Cheers from Switzerland
