The little things always matter, fitting modern components is great and more convential. The car is coming along really nicely.

Great progress! I'd add a emergency cable you could pull if the solenoid was to quit. I know you can pull the seat but it would save a ton of work. I will never forget a guy at a show deciding which window he could live without as it had shaved handles and the battery died

I'm a little concerned with the exposed nature of this mechanism intruding into the trunk space once the lid is closed. If the trunk is packed full, cargo pressing against it might keep it from opening. A "U" shaped protective shroud could prevent that.
@IronTrapGarage

Or an interior panel that hides it all when the car is finished.

Just like we did it in the 50's only we used 6 volt GM starter solenoids.

Nice job. The smooth lid looks just right. Although I feel like that cable is going to be an issue when it eventually loosens. I think I would have made some kind of a solid link to take all of the slack out. But hey, lots of ways to skin a cat, right?

Nice job ! A rubber cap from an end-mill tool tube will fit it . The tool tube will have to be the diameter of the spring , so the cap slips over it , but will be tight enough to resist falling off . Lubricate that latch , now that you have it all working good . This car is really coming along nicely .

Cool feature to add the trunk popper. I had heard of kits having some sort of spring to keep the door or panel open a little but I had not heard of the old valve spring trick. Learned something new here and that’s a neat old school trick I’ll have to remember.

Whoever had the 38 before you got it had just cobbled it together and I'd say if anyone besides you got it, it would not be in the shape it is today. Most people would have just given up on it and MAYBE, might have just junked it! SO GLAD that you guys at ITG got it and are in the process of bringing it back to it's former "One time" pristine condition once again!!! EXCELLENT work on the trunk as you do everything else!!!!

Like the popper! I would put the switch near the trunk and a kill switch in the car. Maybe machine a bumper bolt to hold the button or something similar. Great video as always!

Neat solution to your trunk popper. Like the back in the day approach coupled with some modern upgrades I.e. nutcerts etc. my suggestion would be move the solenoid button to under the car, wire a n/c n/o relay to allow release only when the car is either off or on your choice. An auxiliary cable just in case of battery fail . Your local hardware store ( not box store) will have a Hillman selection of rubber/ nylon caps. Also the suggestion of heat shrink to dress it up works well I used it on one of my similar projects. Can’t wait to see the 38 on the road. The paint job can definitely wait.

Matt, another thing you could do to straighten out the trunk lid is to angle cut the inner structure, then use a pannishing hammer and smooth out the surface. Once the lid is smooth you then tig the inner back in, I know it is a lot of welding but you would have a better looking trunk lid.

@ 26:18 I breathed a sigh of relief re the rubber on the top. Was thinking all along it needed a rubber top. You may have to trim the spring some more. You get me every time I think you've missed something! Quality content gentlemen! This car is coming along rreally well. Great to see the Delorean drive, if I somehow missed it, could you drop a link to that episode of itg? If you haven't, would love to get a walkthrough on it, that's the '32 to have (ie Roadster I mean) great stuff, and great to see Steve getting more relaxed around the camera!

I'd use a piece of shrink sleeve over the coil spring to dress it up and keep the metal to metal rubbing down. Put te sleeve over the coil, heat it up and you are done. Lots of fiddling with this setup but that's Hot Rodding. It works pretty slick now. That nut-sert tool you use is worth it's weight in gold. You use it all the time and it is handy for your various project needs. I enjoyed watching the evolution on this one. Mike has a sense of humor having the deck lid open and there you are lying in the trunk (a visual pow). Thanks for another great episode!

My thought was to drill and tap the solenoid plunger then fab up a short threaded rod with a flat end on it to mate up with the rod that goes to the latch. But your way works too. 😂 Nice. edit: to dress that spring, maybe a small wheel cylinder cup would work. All sorts of sizes on Amazon.

I would put a curved triangle piece, billit or other type metal. Just curved and big enough to stick a finger under it and pull upwards instead of having to grab for the edge of the trunk. Maybe about 2 inches long tapered and shaped like a wave. Think they use to build something like it with a push-button release. Later styles had the key to unlock in the push button. But if going for the totally shaved and smooth look I understand.

@hotrodZack1948
@hotrodZack1948 2 месяца назад
Also you probably need to shrink the trunk skin you could use a 000 tip on your torch and do water shrink on it. I used to have a video on here doing it in a model A fender but its been gone for years. Im sure you know how.
@IronTrapGarage
@IronTrapGarage 2 месяца назад
The panel warpage is because someone was heating the panel so much to lead it. Heat shrinking the skin would only make it worse without access to the backside of the panel.

Another trick is using the engine hood spring that opens the hood on a 60s or 70s car or truck.
