She mixed up the term AI and CGI. Mappa uses cell shaded CGI models to do their shows. It helps with certain characters more. Like Caiman in Dorohedoro. You don't have to keep track of his head spikes. But the animation can look a bit weird. Especially depending on costume changes with characters. The models can be noticeably different. Noi for example has proportion issues in shots every now and again and in certain outfits. Like her dress outfit. Her arms and legs are very wide. But her nude model has her arms and legs proportioned correctly. Muscles don't flex in the series. Because they aren't rigged to have a muscle system to simulate. But a regular animated show. Would have muscles flex and tense. Watch various scenes in Dragonball VS Dorohedoro. This is not a knock on Mappa. CGI and hand animation has pros and cons.
What gets me though is this isn't really news for anime. It is well known that anime like Gundam Seed used this since the early 2000s. The technology has improved since then, but there are issues with it still. But in the end it is a tool like everything else. Like practical effects vs cgi; practical effects can look horrible when done poorly and cheaply, as well as being just as, if not more expensive than CGI.
@@strategicperson95 Most of the issues with CG in anime solely come from time. Many anime movies use CG far more effectively and blend more seemlessly than in TV shows, which often have less time per episode and less budget.
That is true. In addition, there are shows which have computer generated inbetweens from software like CACANI such as Captain Tsubasa (2018) and JOJO's. The mix up here is that it's more "computer assisted" that AI since you have to use it during the inbetween and clean up stage and then color it manually, rather than inputting two finished images with color and effects and having it poop a third one inbetween.
She didn't miss the thing in ghosting. She got it WRONG. Ghosting is intentionally added, so when she said "it by using AI or frame interpolation gone wrong, and is not hand-drawn", she already got the idea wrong, despite already explaining what it is for lol. It is not hand-drawn, true, because it is an EDIT. It's not frame interpolation gone wrong or AI if it is intended AND a non-ghosted copy exists. This is what happens when you make a report with bias and not double check facts.

However, I can also see it's still far from being capable of making consistent frames, so its role in animation is really not much (best use case atm is color coding, but even that is still not much), so animators are still important.

She's really harping on about how 'ghosting' can never be intentional and must always be indicative of AI. Basically, she wants to be right even though her argument has been shot down, because if she's 1% right, then she can use that as proof that she's "credible". The ghosting effect itself is really easy to create and requires no funky tools: just let the previous frame in an animation remain visible at like 50% opacity. This effect is also known as 'trails' and has been around forever. It's not something one does accidentally or as a time-saving measure, it's something an animator chooses to include for the visual effect and how it can emphasize speed and motion. Interpolation artifacts leave a different effect between actual frames, and are basically two source frames kinda smooshed together to create more frames between them. A lot of interpolation results in glitches and smears where the algorithm messed up, and many people find interpolated animation to be jarring, so it's not often deliberately invoked.
Modern Interpolation algorithms are getting significantly better and some animation tools are starting to use them. The important thing to keep in mind is that the animator can decide which frames get interpolated and which don't, so that way frames which benefit from interpolation (such as motion frames) gain that but frames which don't (such as scene changes) aren't changed. And the animators can also clean up those frames to fix artifacts afterwards. If developed with the creators in mind rather than as a get rich quick scheme, we could see a day where algorithmic interpolation would be a huge boon to animation in general.

She was wrong, but she didn't want to outright admit it. Her first video, while it wasn't trying to paint MAPPA badly for using AI, she didn't say it clearly to avoid to be taken it that way, and the last thing before the video loop didn't help as it was something bad about MAPPA's overworking practice. I'd say she was very clumsy in making her video, but her response to the backlash was simply bad, no apology and no accountability for the screw up. It doesn't bode well for her.
I'm probably in the minority here, but if people are seeing this video and thinking she's paint MAPPA badly, then that's a them problem. Not everything has to be an accusation, and it's sad that people should have to clarify that they're not trying to talk shit before talking about something. Maybe just stop being defensive?

@Blakobness Yes, I kind of agree on that as well. Ai art isn't bad as long as it is used right, and the artist still does work on it after just generating an image. But, the issue in this case is that Japanese culture is heavily focused around working hard. And if a Japanese company is being accused of something that is believed to mostly be lazy, it can greatly harm their business. I don't and wouldn't dislike them using AI art, but I do dislike people making claims that can hurt those who did nothing wrong.

What frustrates me about these cases is that there always seems to be someone who lacks knowledge about the subject at hand (in this case, animation and working in animation studios) yet speaks without presenting evidence or proof, they may offer a half-baked “reason” that has been proven wrong many times, but they can still ruin something and their followers will always say "Yeah, you're right". And on the other hand, why people even go to such a great length to refute their claims with a hard evidence without even checking these kind of people's credibility or whether they have proven anything or not? Said it a lot of times in a lot of platforms, but this hate towards the A.I. it's insane. It became the new 'isn't black enough' that many used as an excuse to harass artists while believing themselves on the 'moral' side, because going against them means you are a 'bad' person. And one thing I hate even more, is all these 'experts' talking out of their ass. I've argued with many people who were like, "I've seen dozens of them and I can recognize AI arte at a glance, bruh." ruining artists' reputations because nobody cares whether it's true or not, but they know that just associating with them could paint them in a bad light and dump them.
But ... There are already tools in animation software that helps with interpolate frames without AI or at least not current times AI, it's a common thing... Although not necessary for animation.
yeah, or “in-between” frames. VERY useful and not at all noticable If done correctly. I’d recommend looking into all the terms so that when you watch your next anime/animated show you can spot all of these techniques and truly appreciate and understand the level of depth the animators truly put into the craft :)

I'm a 2D and 3D professional animator, what I can add to this conversation is, it depends what sources she's getting and what Animator she talked to. Is this animator worked before in an Japanese Animation studio or not? Japanese animation studios have their own style, tools and techniques to do animation, yes most times we animators we will be given tools to improve our speed and max profit for the studio. A lot of people tend to blame VFX artists 3D Animators and 2D Animators for some animation decisions but you have to take in consideration, we do not have a saying most of the time in regards to tools and pipelines. Studios will do what it must to maximize profit and speed to deliver their projects, yes, we Animators get hired to do animation. The people in charge is mostly for Animation Supervisors or Animation Directors, these are the people that have more of a voice in the matter of how to approach things in the studio. Now, I don't work in a Japanese studio so I don't have much of an idea how things are done there, I know they are using more often now 2D Digital animation (Flash or Toon Boom or TVPaint) whatever software they use that can provide easy ways to speed up your animation. she mentioned that MAPPA did use CG for their backgrounds to save time, its true like I said, studios will do whatever it takes to facilitate and improve the speed of the Animation that is the most grindy of all. So did they use A.I.? It is possible, I can't say if they did or didn't, we animators are not very happy about it, you can voice your discontent about it but at the end is the producers and clients in the studio that decide, we Animators don't get paid to choose our tools, we get paid to do the animation, that's the reality, its up to mostly to the Animation Directors and Supervisors. So they could have used A.I. or not, who's to say? Who knows what benefits will bring A.I. or ruin us artists. Its up to the people to support us by not buying or paying for A.I. made products at the end.

When someone says "I spoke with an animator" (or any other professional) without providing any detail on his expertise, you know it's BS from the start.
She's right about the fact that a lot of studios may be using ai in between some frames or something to fill in the blanks to help the workload but there's no confirmation of such things happening when it comes to MAPPA at least as far as I know.

If it's an imitation claiming to be the real version, sure. Used in any other context, you're not using the word correctly. Fake in any other context would imply it doesn't exist. If you can see it, and you aren't hallucinating, it's real.
Even if mappa did use some ai, it would be used as an animation tool, not to do all the animation so its not that bad. Plus mappa could train the ai on everything they have animated in the past and so it would be ethical too since they arent stealing any art.

also reminder that when people say "this anime drawn with AI" the first thing people will think is the kind of AI that stole from artist and not the one that used to fill the inbetween of animation frames. one of those programs is leeches of other artist works, the other one is only determining the frame inbetween 2 frames. the program to fill inbetween of animation has existed far longer than the current AI technology, and it's far less malicious in it's operation.

Anime and animation in general has been using "ghosting effect" as part of compositing during speed and rapid movement like forever, this woman is a certified tourist who knew nothing about the animation process.
Sounds to me like she's been talking to an animator and repeats what she heard, but lacks knowledge to back it all up and understand the information properly.

This is why you should never trust a person that quote did a lot of research and talked with an unnamed “expert.” I guarantee there wasn’t a single citation of her or the “expert” she spoke to. Even some of the oldest animated dinsey movies have ghost frames, becausee blending frames allows the animetain to appear more seamless. and CG animation isn't doen with AI. Atleast not currently. It's understandable that she'd get some info that includes AI in her research if she just started researching this, because outlets won't shut up about AI animation. But the sad thing is, she didn't even consider that changing a camera angle in animation could be the result of a simpler to draw pose, which would reduce the time spent on animation. which if a studio is dealing with crunch, is definately happening. The proof is in the fact that Mappa in particular did this on other projects like Attack on Titan which they also fixed in the Blueray.
Ok 3 Things I want to say to this. 1. I feel like the Animator she talked to isn't doing animation anywhere near Anime or maybe not even in 2D. Furthermore the animator most likely also isn't familiar with the animation culture and differences in Broadcasting and general Laws in Japan, which at times can get really fucky and convoluted. So, the animator probably said everything correct to to the best of their knowledge, which in this case wasn't appropriate in that case and is more used in different situations. 2. I also feel when she did her research she probably skimmed through the information on Frame Interpolation, Frame Generation, Frame Rates, etc. It can be quite confusing at time but if you really take a serious look at that stuff, there is a lot of information that just clicks, once you understand it. For example then she would have also learned that you wouldn't use Ai specifically to create those Ghosted/Interpolated Frames. For one, you can just easily do that with normal software, you don't need any bigger Ai or Deep learning model (of course the quality can be improved with Ai) and second that given that Anime like Cartoons are broadcasted in a set Frame rate that doesn't change. So you wouldn't need to use Ai to fill in gaps that could much easier be cut, changed in duration, adjusted or given less priority in the animation work. You would much rather use Ai to try to fill gaps that you couldn't fix with a much simpler and nicer approach, for example Nvidias Frame Generation in Gaming is made to give a much smoother gaming experience by generating "fake frames" so that the felt input is much nicer than a stocky 30 frames game would be. 3. I feel most people really don't take a serious and complex look at the ".... became too mainstream" situation. If an entertainment style doesn't gain interest over its course of its life span, it WILL die at some point. This is not only seen in Entertainment but can be also applied to many other things in life like for example with Candle Wax on Letters which is basically just kept alive by like 5 people on the global scale where 4 out of those are from the UK Royal family probably. Furthermore to have any real progression and improvement of any Art form, you need growth. Otherwise progression and competitiveness dies off and you wouldn't have animation studios trying to one up each animation the next seasons. But the real crux of the issue would be money. If your field, doesn't grow you can get limited in resources very quickly, let alone loose the needed manpower. The Anime business is not some Ai machine that can continue with 0 interests, its run by people and their passion. If your company works in a field which is going downhill, it becomes much harder to justify the hiring and keeping of talent. Everywhere in the business, and given that the Anime industry has also a huge issue with crunching like the gaming industry, there needs to be enough room for people to create new sectors and support for people who want to create something better. Like how indie gaming has been booming the last few years with game tools becoming easier and easier, to the point that big studios get called "Money Greedy Corporate Shells" and Indie Devs get quoted as something better. Anime won't have that if it doesn't try to grow and appeal to a bigger audience. Does that mean Anime should become completely void of any risks and just do what sells well? No. But Anime like Gaming, could much easier make those Anime with proper risk and themes, etc. if the audience is big enough and its worth to have people dedicated to those projects. Think of it like this: If there are 10 anime watchers in the world and one of them loved Isekais or Mech anime, and the other 9 hate it. Why should a Anime Studio focus on that 1 person instead of the other 9? This is not Law, this is entertainment and it needs to sell to support the Studio. But if the 1 out of 10 becomes 10.000 out of 1.000.000, you can really say that there is a need and market for that stuff. 2:02 as someone who worked a lot in video encoding, and have tried a.i frame interpolation myself, she is completely wrong, the ghosting is the result of traditional non-a.i frame intepolation mode called "frame blending", and it they actuall use a.i frame interpolation, theres shouldnt be ghosting, but instead, a morphing of image might happen. 6:38 yes she has her point and i dont disagree, a.i is a helpful tool, i do 3d animation a lot, and a.i powered rendering is a blessing, it reduced rendering time by 90%. 8:48 "it could be the result of ai gone wrong" she added her own opinion to it💀...no mam, its just frame interpolation, its the previous frame *fading* into the next frame, you dont need any ai to do that, and theres nothing "gone wrong", it was intended to be ghosting, the purpose of the ghost is to reduce eye strain and seizure.
Ghosting is a result of the double exposure on frames bleeding into the next, due to the animation rates and playback rates being slightly different, just get any animated show from the last 60 years and play it... you'll see the exact same ghosting effect!
@@bestboi2945it will never be a compliment. AI is always ugly or missing very important anatomy. As an animator myself I would be furious if someone told me my animation is AI. It never has and never will be a compliment. End of story.
she literally acknowledged their talent and hardwork and said it wasnt used as frequently, she said it was a small part of it, everything you saying is an extended projection of whats not even there, just blantant bias because the internet doesnt agree with her. also theres no way, I searched up AI interpellation 1 search, and its been used since 2021 and looks reliable enough to be used by big companies, theres no way people are this ignorant, I never even agreed or disagreed with her
The whole onion skin being a mistake thing is completely untrue. I have some animation experience, so I would like to provide my input. Onion skins exist for smoother frame transition, usually in scenes with lots of movement to keep animation from looking choppy.
Ghosting is nothing new back when 1080i was the META in the late 90s (yes not 1080p) broadcasting companies used interpolation which introduced the same effects of "transparent onions" to save bandwidth when televising live broadcasts running in 60 FPS. Meaning the videos were 30 FPS but due to interpolation they are displayed as if it is 60 FPS. Interpolation used to be the standard from the 90s even before 720p/1080i became the standard in displays in CRT monitors/TV panels. You don't need AI to generate these in between ghosting effects to fool the eyes of fluid motion.
