I definitely prefer my hair natural versus relaxed. My hair has achieved lengths it never achieved with relaxers, but I don’t knock other people relaxing. It’s literally not my business. Black women should do what makes them happy.

See I wish it were as simple as letting black women do makes them happy. The problem is that we feel and see the constant pressure of society to conform to whiteness. And because relaxing your hair may take away some of that pressure and may seem to make others happy having to deny ourselves. But we’re never going to be truly happy trying to fit into a society the constantly rejects us. Now no one should ever harass or disparage a black women because of her personal choices of her body. It’s just not as simple as letting people do whatever they want because we don’t exist in a vacuum.
@Amberelyse
@Amberelyse 3 года назад
@@oliviaspring9690 it really is that simple to let black women do what we want. I’m NEVER going to tell a black woman, “oh don’t relax your hair because you’re conforming to whiteness”, you know why because I’m not sitting there helping black women detangle their hair for HOURS and I’m not buying their natural hair care products! So who am I to lecture black women in what they should and shouldn’t do with their hair. If a black woman wants to wear their hair in it’s natural state 👏🏽, if a black woman wants to relax their hair because it’s what they prefer 👏🏽. It really is that simple.

@@Amberelyse that’s why I made the point about harrassment if you are talking to a random person online it crosses that line. But if you know someone in real life that’s different. @@oliviaspring9690 I don't relax my hair, been natural for over 7 years. I still would not tell someone what to do with their hair even if I knew them personally, because who the hell would I think I am to offer unsolicited advice. If they wear to ask I'd give my opinion on the matter based on my experience with relaxed hair instead of giving it assuming they relax because they want to be "white" or "fit in" with society. I relaxed mine because it was much easier to manage and I liked how it looked. Did I want to be white, hell no. Maybe you are projecting. Do you know how annoying it is for someone to offer "their help" in something you don't even want help with. I feel sorry for your friends because how dare they want to be different.

Hi, I was just wondering, did your son lose his hair because the dermatologist didn't know how to treat alopecia in black hair, or does black skin sometimes need different treatment than white skin, or is this something to do with babies' hair/skin specifically, etc? I was just curious and concerned about how it happened (I'm a white girl and also unfamiliar with babies in general, sorry if my question seems stupid/intrusive)

I also did my daughter's hair which was longer than mine. Sometimes I would let my former beautician do my hair as a treat for me . I listen and ask questions. I went natural after losing my best friend to cancer. I watched a lot of RU-vid and got tips from new comers and season pros. I always read labels for food and medication, so now for hair products too, researching the ingredient names . I am a Aquarius ♒🏺. We love hard and deep with our hearts. I was tempted a couple years ago to go back to relaxers because I was exhausted and frustrated with all the set backs. 🤦🏾‍♀️ So I decided to leave her alone (before I made a decision I might regret) and do protective styles more often. I just relaxed my 18 yrs old daughters hair today for the first time in her life. It turned out nice, I did rollers and placed her under the dryer. I then ran the flat iron because it’s my first time relaxing anyones hair and I guess I didn’t do the best job at the roots but I was trying to keep the relaxer off the scalp. I didn’t want to burn her scalp etc. I am also not the best at doing rollers ( haven’t done it that often). At the end she even let me trim her hair. It looks cute, it’s definitely much easier to manage. She has 4C texture. It’s just such a challenge for her to maintain. I am trying to help her but I am not a stylist and I am just trying to help her do what is best for her. Trying to help her find what works for her without braking the bank. Thank you for sharing your video and for being kind.

Short story on what broke me from calling relaxers "perms". When I was a teen I made an appointment with my stylist for a 'Perm' He comes out different size perm rods while holding them next to my hair saying he's was checking to see what size I need for the perm I was getting. I was confused. He then explained that a relaxer relaxes your hair while a perm curls it up. So he asked me again...what service was I there for. A relaxer, please. I have not confused the two since.

So theoretically, if it doesn’t affect her safety or clash with Unit SOPs she could twists or whatever works best with her texture and secure it into a ponytail or leave it unsecured if it doesn’t extend past her shirt collar. Super extra and kinda controversial in my conservative unit, but great for my hairline personally and reduction of traction alopecia for potentially her and many other female soldiers that would have to put in a lot of work to achieve a slick bun. I’m not super curly but I would have to leave my hair wet constantly which can weaken the shaft

I used to get compliments on my relaxed hair but I feel I get even more in my natural hair. My hair is lucky enough to be dense, coarse, and versatile so 🤷🏾‍♀️ that's why I stayed natural. Relaxers did feel easier though lol but that mightve just been going to the hairdresser every month.

I'd been natural for about nine years or so when I started on my hair journey. And it just stagnated. I did it all from finger detangling to porosity tests and staying away from heat and the laundry list of thing that I 'should' have done was quite extensive. But my hair just remained at the same length and was still quite difficult to manage. And that's putting it mildly. So last year I decided it would either be a big chop and short hair for the rest of my life or a relaxer. I figured I was already planning on chopping it off anyway so if the relaxer results were not what I wanted I'd still cut it off. But my hair just came into its own. It suddenly became easier to manage. My wash days were super easy and short and it just started retaining length and felt and looked amazing. Granted I didn't get it bone straight but rather loosened my curl pattern which is naturally super tight. But that small change made a world of difference. I won't say its for everyone. I've seen and heard enough relaxer horror stories to know that to be true. And there is a massive movement out there hell bent on shaming individuals who decide to relax their hair deciding that they aren't doing it for the right reasons etc causing a lot of people who find it next to impossible to manage their natural hair continue in their difficult hair journeys unassisted. But I'm glad I got my relaxer. As she said, do you. A relaxer is what I needed to restore faith in my hair and keep me on my hair journey. So don't be afraid to do what works for you and your circumstances. Only you know how heavy the crown that sits on your head is.

I have been natural since 2001 before it was very popular. I would NEVER go back to relaxing my hair. The relaxer burned so bad. That's why I stopped. The smell of the relaxer was so bad as well. I remember the shampoo girl did not wash the relaxer out completely and my hair was stuck to my scalp. I did not enjoy any part of getting my hair relaxed, because my experiences were all bad. With that said I would not talk badly about someone who relax their hair. We have the right to do what we want with our hair. So NO JUDGMENT from me.

I'm glad I stopped relaxing my hair and went natural in 2015. I remember my hair never would grow past my the bottom of my neck. I used to get bad scalp burns myself and the smell when I would go and wash it weeks after it was done, it always smelled like my hair was burning. When I go and get my hair pressed, it's so beautiful and strong. It's way healthier than a relaxer. I don't regret a day of my natural decision. I'm not judging either. I just wish I had known how bad relaxers were when I was a kid. Till this day I get upset at my mom for cutting all my long hair off and getting a perm in my hair at 8.

I don't like relaxers simply because they don't look right and broke my hair off. I was really young when I got my relaxer and I hated it. It was done properly and didn't burn me or anything, but after a while my hair started breaking off and we just decided to cut it and start over. I went from butt length hair to shoulder length and more hair got cut because of something unrelated. It took a long time to grow that back and I'm still not that yet. What pissed me off was I didn't want it in the first place, but I had no choice and my mom was pressured into doing it by our family. I loved my natural hair and straight never looked right to me and it still doesn't.

I got my first relaxer at 10 years old (Gentle Treatment). I was so excited! My hair was and still is really thick. My mom would spend hours pressing my hair on every other Saturday evening. My sister went first because her curl pattern was much looser than mine and was much faster and easier. The relaxer changed both my life and my mother’s as well. From my perspective: Relaxers are for making curly hair straight and Perms are for making straight hair curly. But since Perm is short for Permanent, there really needs to be a different name for the staight to curl change, since both things are altering the natural state of the hair in a permanent (until it grows out) way.

I've been Natura 7 years now. Yes, it can be very challenging (especially while transitioning before the big chop) finding products that work for your hair, detangling, wash day, etc. But how can you beat sweating with freedom, embracing the rain on your fro, rocking a hairstyle using only water, conditioner, and gel, and last but not least HEALTHY HAIR👏🏾 I've mastered my hair to the point I only use a comb to create parts. It has become very convenient. I only straightened it to get a good trim (twice a year) if I want it straightened longer or color I buy weave. With relaxer, you have to CONSISTENTLY combat the chemicals in order to have healthy thriving hair. I'll NEVER go back to the creamy crack🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾

I would also add argan oil to the relaxer itself after it was mixed! I’ve always had relaxers since I was a little girl, my grandma would always give me one every other month and it’s really all I’ve known. Still to this day I use them but I try to stretch the time in between. I’ve tried to go natural but the truth is I really don’t know how to care for my hair otherwise which is a fail on my part. It’s just easier to manage that way. I really enjoy watching your videos, I don’t know how I stumbled onto your page but I’m so glad I did!

Great work as usual! I love how you are not judgmental about relaxers. After trying to go natural about 5 times in the last 7 years or so, my relaxer is easier for me to keep up. Plus, dealing with 2 textures was hard (my hair would shed something terrible!) and I didn’t dn’t want to cut off my bra strap length hair
@marleyhill34
@marleyhill34 3 года назад
It was the two textures that made me cut mine. lol! That line of demarcation is not it for my ultra-fine hair. That and the overprocessing and lack of care from my stylists. I was like I'm done and I'm cutting off the straight pieces and using white people shampoo and conditioner. Lol! I did that for a year and it was very cheap..this was back in 2009 and the natural movement hadn't really picked up steam yet. Then I started going to a white Aveda salon. The next time I relax my hair it's going to be a blond buzzcut. Lol! Zero shedding and splitends. Lol!

I am mixed race from Africa and I relax my hair. When it wasn't relaxed it was dry and really difficult to style and so I just kept it tied up and it broke into different lengths. Now relaxed, as long as I keep it hydrated, my hair is tops! One thing that does damage my hair is dyeing it. I have light ash brown hair so a lot of sun has an effect on it. But also your age has a lot to with it. I didn't have my mum to teach me what to do with our kind of hair so my twenties were a breakage disaster. 30s, it's doing better :) Love your channel!

i did the big chop at the beginning of the pandemic and I’m experience the dryness and breaking at different lengths with my natural hair. Most of my hair is easy to keep moisturized but there is this one patch that is so hard to I keep moisturized. it dries out and is so brittle and breaks. I’m done. I appreciate how much length I’ve grown during this period of being natural but I can really do anything with this lopsided ‘fro. I’m going back to relaxing my hair.

With a relaxer I rarely ever had split ends my hair just grows crazy uneven and I could never get past shoulder length. I’ve been natural since I’ll say 2012 and fairy knots and split ends eat up all my length . I’ve tried wash and goes (in the summer months)and protective styling for months at a time but these ends and knots won’t let me be great! My hair was healthiest with a jerry curl 😂
@MrsNicolas

Stretching hair helps to reduce fairy knots. Also washing hair in braids or twist. I do a low heat blow dry stretched out hair. Always have scissors/shears ready for fairy knots and split ends. Regular trims every 3 to 6 months also helps with fairy knots. As well as use ingredients with a slip. As hair as splits ends. Moisturize and hydrate hair. Because the ends of our hair is the oldest, it's need the most care and gentle touch. Stay away from high heat for a while. The tighter the coil, the more prone to fairy knots. Hope that helps.

Thanks Ana. Thank you. I only blow dry when i trim or get a trim. otherwise no heat. 2020 i kept my hair stretched with the rubber band method using hair ties and wore a headwrap- my ends still stayed damaged. This year I am working on hydrating more and seeing if that will help.

I LOVEEEEE your commentary on this video, especially in regard to having healthy hair with a relaxer. It's been 9 years since I've had one, but I'm so tempted to get a relaxer because my hair was easier for me to maintain and it grew so well when I had one. I'm struggling so hard being natural, heavy breakage and everything! It's so hard to find a stylist in Philly that does natural hair and not just weaves. They're always booked like 3-6 months out. 🤦🏿‍♀️

Why did you chose to go natural? Or was it like a trend? I went natural because I wanted to learn to look after my hair and my relaxed hair was so unhealthy. I was like why am I paying someone to damage my hair. I hated being tied to the salon and finding a good stylist for a relaxer was a nightmare. They always overprocessed my hair and never gave me the proper treatments. My natural hair has always been healthier than my relaxed hair but I know for some people it's the other way around.

I have been getting relaxers for over 10 years and I love it! Curly hair requires more moisture than relaxed hair and more time to take care of it. With relaxed hair you only need to moisturize your hair once a week and you can literally wash your hair, comb it in less than 10 minutes and let it air dry. A wash day with relaxed hair is less than 30 minutes. A wash day with thick curly hair can last an hour or more. I don't want to spend more than 30 minutes on my hair during wash day. I just love the convenience that relaxed hair gives you. It's much easier and CHEAPER to maintain.
@marleyhill34

Nope. Not my high porosity hair. The relaxer made it more porous and it had no volume and it was straight but frizzy!!! I have only experience moisturised natural hair. I'd literally spend hours at home and at the salon trying to get my relaxed hair to look good. I literally had between 20-50 products for my relaxed hair and now I have 5 products for my natural hair.

*Natural Hair is CHEAPER to maintain too if you follow the Old school way and are not a Product Junkie.* I know it's nice to support black-owned but there's no way in the World I was gonna spend that kind of money on Hair. No $19 Leave-ins and $10-$12 Curly Custards & Leave-ins for me. A product line for $45-$60 NOT ME! NEVER. The other companies sell products for $5-$6Bucks or less on sale: Shampoo+Condish, Leave-ins, Moisturizer, Gel _(jumbo sizes)._ *_Natural Oil or Pomade as a Sealant on wet moisturized hair lock-in moisture for 1week_*_ (a Natural girl's dream)._ A little bit goes a long way _[Blue Magic, Softee, Dax...etc.]._ I don't know why the Online Community & Social Media have these women using all these different products. All to try to achieve someone else's Curl pattern. _The obsession with wanting Brastrap & especially waist-length Hair is ridiculous and leads them to purchase all sorts of expensive ingredients to make hair-growth concoctions too._

Every relaxer stylist I went to overprocessed my hair when it came to relaxer and then never gave me the protein treatment I needed. you know who introduced me to protein before youtube. A white girl with pink straight hair. She took one look at my fine strands and said you need a daily protein spray and recommended one. When I asked the stylists in the salons how to get my relaxed hair healthy, they could not tell me how and even suggesting that I was doing something to damage it at home. They couldn't even recommend products. Every 6 weeks they would relax my hair and cut off inches until my hair was too short to style.
