This week I installed my new Sherwood Helical Head Thicknesser into the workshop. I thought it would be a good time to look at why I upgraded and also the differences between a Helical Head and a straight knife head.
Every raves about how good a Helical Head is and I wanted to put it to the test and see for myself
Here is the new Thicknesser from Timbercon: www.timbecon.c...

I had my DeWalt converted to helical head and the difference is night and day. Quieter and smoother. I think you made the right choice and I know you'll be a lot happier. Also, you can resharpen the carbide cutters after they get a little dull, which means saving money. Great review.

Different sized unmilled test pieces got to me. Not around for anything too rigorous, obviously. It just undercuts the conclusions of your testing which is a shame because taken at face value the rest of your methods I found adequately considered. I liked your delivery. Your format is compelling in the videos I've watched. I think the music could be a bit less intense or loud or something.

Good machine, had mine for about 3months now. One thing I don't like is the claws that prevent the wood coming back out. At certain heights they jam on the wood as it is going in and make it hard to feed, requiring a bit of force which then damages the end of the boards. Not sure how other brands handle this so may not be unique to the Sherwood. Apart from that, happy with it and it certainly does produce a great finish.

Did u test and adjust feed tables mine came slightly raised compared to bed with straight edge on it. Also get decent snipe on start of cut how is yours and what have u done with tables to eliminate maybe it needed the slight up angle
@SmallFryCreations
@SmallFryCreations 3 года назад
Hey mine came out level but I have noticed since using it a lot more that the ball thing at the front can cause a little snipe at times. If I have a small board and feed it from either side of the ball in the middle then it’s fine. Hope that helps 😀
@jakoj2098
@jakoj2098 3 года назад
@@SmallFryCreations thanks I adjusted mine level but a little hand weight brings the tables down 5mm so was unsure if that was causing snipe, the ball height indicator may be pushing down on it also but once the roller clamps it before blade it should not effect it? Was told be timbercom to lift wood on feed but I was only using 600mm long bits so should not be any leverage

I was looking at the DeWalt DW-735XE, but this seems to be the better choice - and cheaper. I'm not clear why the DeWalt is so expensive, even though by all accounts it's a very good performer. The fact there is a third party helical head for it which everyone raves about (almost doubling the cost vs the Sherwood) really makes me think the Sherwood is the better option. Am I wrong? What do you think about the DeWalt?
@SmallFryCreations
@SmallFryCreations Год назад
I hear you. I have never used the DeWalt but everyone raves about it. The most important thing I think in a thicknesser is the helical head. I love the Sherwood. It hasn’t skipped a beat and produces great results and has fantastic dust collection. If the dewalt is double once you upgrade the head I would say the Sherwood is a rest way to go as it’s already built in. 😀
@frangipani-dreams
@frangipani-dreams Год назад
@@SmallFryCreations Yeah exactly my thinking. It just doesn't seem to make any sense to pay more for the DeWalt with a view to upgrading to the helical head on it, when you can get that on the Sherwood by default for A LOT less money! 5 year warranty on Sherwood also, and only 3 on the DeWalt. Seems like a no brainer unless I'm missing something.

Thank you. I have never used the dewalt sorry. The Sherwood is excellent and I’m super happy with the purchased. In the small experience I have I think as long as the machine has a helical head your on a winner. The real greatest of the machine is the head 😀

thank you for the review. Im about to make the choice between the timbercon or the carbatec drum sander. I only do epoxy river serving boards or epoxy and wood coasters at the present time and I worry about snipe, thats why im thinking drum sander. Though timbercon has a good deal on the delux and the dust extractor. How is the snipe going on yours now that you have had it for a while.
@SmallFryCreations
@SmallFryCreations 3 года назад
Hey thank you. Drum sander is a great idea. The thicknesser is great but like most there is a little snipe at the end of the board. The helical head is much much better then the straight blades but there is a little. I think it would come down to time. The thicknesser would be quicker but would require a little sanding to remove the snipe vs a drum sander that might be a little slower but require less palm sanding. 😀😀
@scottdickson3908
@scottdickson3908 3 года назад
@@SmallFryCreations I decided on the thicknesser due to floor space. Shipped out yesterday so should be here in a week. Thinking of making a jig bed to see if it cuts out all snipe. Got the little dust extractor as well. Next upgrade will be a 2hp if I get a bigger shop space. Cheers again.

Hi. Quick questions from someone considering purchasing one (your demo was really thorough - thanks for explaining). 1. You ran the wood through a couple of times. Did you lower the blade each time or does it take a few passes at a certain thickness to get it right? 2. If the wood is uneven or warped, do you need to brace it with some sort of a flat frame to hold it steady in order to get one flat side? Thanks!
@SmallFryCreations
@SmallFryCreations 3 года назад
Hey thank you. Yep I lower the blade each time about half a turn each time I ran the piece through. If the wood is warped or uneven you need to have a flat board under the piece and put some shims in to hold the board in place where it’s uneven. Once you get the top at the same level take it off the board and flip it over and run the other side through. Then you have a perfectly flat board 😀

@@SmallFryCreations I bought one last week (sadly 3 days before they dropped to $800 for Black Friday) and set it up this afternoon. I'm searching for videos on how to use it properly now. It came with 4 screws in a plastic bag that I have no idea where to put.
