You get 2 options when you start Shining Resonance Refrain for the first time, Original or Refrain, but what exactly is the difference?

Played the demo on PS4, whilst the gameplay was fun I didn't think it was as polished as it should be. I'm not talking about graphics I'm talking about the voice acting English and how the plot was presented as something very very simple.

Short version: Do Refrain Mode. The game is super grindy and there is no new game +. Theres mild spoilers but the story isnt that great to begin with so it doesnt really matter that much. Its definitely worth a playthrough, but not more then once since no new game + to help out with continuous plays

In case if anyone still asking, and just for short, Refrain Mode allow you to play as Jinas and Excella from the start without effecting the Original Story. While in Original Mode, you need to beat the game, Save, and then Load the completed Save File. Next, go to Alfreida. There will be new Post-Game event available, and once you play the event for Jinas and Excella, they will be unlocked. However, keep in mind that they will start at Level 1 in Original Mode, so grinding them will be a challenge.

Wait so I can actually get all the trophies on a single run if I started in Original Mode? Please please please tell me this is the case... I dont want to replay the whole game (even tho I greatly enjoy it) just so I can get date events for the 2 extra characters.

@@otomon5 Yes and no. Yes, it is possible to obtain all trophies in single playthrough. Yet....No. Only possible if you chose Refrain Mode. Because there were 2 or 3 Trophies (i kinda forgot) that only obtainable in Refrain Mode.

I think I'll play refrain mode on my first playthrough as well. I don't consider myself to be the type of gamer that gets heavily invested in a story, but it is more appealing to me to try for a 100% playthrough playing the game once instead of trying to get a 100% game completion by playing the game twice.

Thanks for this video. It's simple but I was genuinely curious. Was gonna pop this game in day one and play the refrain mode because I figured it had all the extra content and was a fuller experience, but thanks to your vid I know the original mode is what I want.

I'm actually excited for this primarily because I never played a shining game before only seen like two animes of the series one of them being a sequel to shining tears. This video helped because I was confused like wait what's the difference between original and refrain modes when I was playing through the demo.

I dont mind that they did this, its basically the same thing as getting the Torna blades in XBC2...but why wouldnt they put this refrain mode behind a new game plus option? I know the game originally came out on the PS3 but since that never came over here to the west most people wouldnt have played it, just make it so that once you beat the game you get some little blurb after the credits "you have unlocked Refrain mode, X characters are available to play in your party through the story mode"

MrGaiakid as far as I understand, refrain is an all new mode for this version, the original had nothing extra but costumes, but you're right just add it as a new game plus option but maybe the developers wanted to offer the option for Japanese players that already played the game and would want to jump straight into the new content

G P I played the demo on Switch and didn't notice any frame drops. Honestly I'm not the type of person who cares about graphics or fps, as long as a game is stable and isn't blurry I'll play it if the gameplay is fun. Also I'd love to have the game portably... and I haven't touched my PS4 since I got my Switch lol.

Mike PF I haven't played Ys VIII (and don't plan to, I'm personally not a fan of some of the mechanics) but it's definitely more action when compared to XC2. I'd say it's combat is more similar to the Tales of series and if you want to see gameplay for yourself, SEGA America has done 3 live streams featuring the game for a total of 3-4 hours of direct feed gameplay from the PS4 version on their RU-vid channel

I'll probably play Refrain mode if they allow an Actual NG+ playthrough. (Keeping levels, maybe some new content you couldn't access before yadda yadda) but idk if I would actually play the game again so soon just to have 2 dlc characters that just have a few dialog sequences. Still looking forward to the game tho.

I beat the game today but sad that you can't play new game plus like most game let you do all over aging with all the equipment or skill so when I try refain I have to go back to square one, which it's good thing and bad thing a mix feeling I guess but good game otherwise.

So if I chose refrain mode would I have more cutscenes or less? I would just ignore the new characters but if theres new dialog i would choose refrain. I dont care about trophies, just story content.

first time playing this game, know nothing bout it except "anime protag, waifu's and dragons" and still going Refrain mode. this game was a buy anyway (in hopes japan localizes other games or rerelease ps3 games with japan only content added on to the west. for example i want then to redo white knight chronicles 2 with the japan only content added on which delved more into your own character's backstory. i ADORE WKC's!!!! one of my favs on the ps3!) but i didnt know if i would enjoy it enough to warrent two playthroughs. if the differences are literally jsut a couple DLC characters that dont effect story, or if they do it's incredibly minor, then i see no reason not to play it first and ignore original mode entirely. no one should expect DLC characters to make a whole lotta sense in any game anyway so....

I know that i'm late, both Excella and Jinas are playable in normal/original mode, but they can ONLY be unlocked in post game, so if you want to play them in early game, do refrain mode instead

Been wondering this myself. I'll just have to pretend they aren't there as I doubt I will be playing this game more than once and one of those characters seems like he would be fun to use. I'll just remove them from the party during most major fights (except for the one time I will have them fight themselves because that is hilarious).

I completed original mode but I wish Refrain mode was a REAL new game plus that let me import my character stats, equipment, tunings, etc while boosting the enemy levels to compensate. Otherwise I see no reason to replay it as I'm not THAT eager to pour the time into just to try out the added characters.

Well I mean, you could always just select Refrain mode for your first playthrough and avoid playing with the new characters until post-game or side content. It's not like you HAVE to use them for the story.

Well, see, the thing is that it isn't really like New Game +, either. NG+ typically means that we can carry over at least, like, items and gold we've accumulated from our first playthrough and into the new game. As far as I know, that isn't the case, right? If I do a Refrain playthrough after doing an Original one, playable Jinas and Excella are the only new things there will be in the new playthrough and I'll otherwise start from scratch, right?

I don't think those would be compatible, the first game was apparently heavily criticized by having so much dlc that it went above the price of the full game, mostly cosmetics though however, and that's something that I haven't been able to validate, it had a microtransaction system that allowed you to retry upon death for 100 yen. No idea if it will be implemented in this version

PKPHANTOM haven't found much info as only released in Japan and it was niche then, but people that imported it or were in the know back then say it was a little bit of a controversy and refrain is the apology game, it has all the dlc included, plus the new characters and extra dungeon(s) but I have no idea if the retry system is still in use Take it with a grain of salt but I was told this was the better deal with the extra stuff and the relatively low price, I will buy it if only to have another RPG once I'm done with XC2

As a longtime Tales fan I'm glad there's another game like them. However simultaneously I'm bored of the current Tales formula. I've spent like 80 hours on Xillia, 200 on Xillia 2, 55 on Zestiria and 80 on Berseria. All 4 of these Tales games have followed the same style of world-traversing and enemy-interaction, granted their battle systems vary greatly but the overall feel and presentation is similar. After playing those 4 games I need something kinda different... I hope Resonance succeeds though. It looks like a fun game, I just hope it doesn't fail because how Tales has kind of overrsaturated its own JRPG formula, that adding IPs like Tales inherently make them feel boring, too.

Aww, I kinda feel like I got spoiled here a little. I was hoping to play the original mode first and then Refrain mode after so I could have a different experience since there are 2 characters added to the party but if it's like that that's kind of a bummer. I'm looking forward to this game but knowing this makes my excitement for it go down just a bit.

...And then one of those characters is on the damn box art. Which in turn provides added confusion, especially with various implications. I mean, I get WHY they likely did it, but it really adds more confusion then not.

Noob advice... 20 hours in to endgame when you realize 3 trophies you need for the platinum are in resonance mode only..... and the only differences between them are fairly minor and can be explained in minutes

I'm kinda worried. This game doesn't sold well in Japan and many westerners don't like it as well. I just realized JRPGs are slowly dying, they don't have any games as high quality as western RPGs nowaday, for example could you tell me any JRPGs as good as Witcher 3?

johny deorasso but western RPG's are gray and bland. Atlus still creates good RPGs but they are turn based like SMT ,PERSONA, ETRIAN ODYSSES. Maybe you will like them because you play modern Wrpgs which are all real time combat. there are a lot of good JRPGs dont just look at big releases try to play niche series like Cold Steel series, Ys, Disgaea etc. also other games/series Xenoblade series,Fire emblem series, Valkyria Chronicles series, Tales Series, Dragon Quest series. Also I think the west likes shooters more that is why rpg's dont sell well even wrpgs compared to the shooters.

Shining Resonance Refrain is a PS3 Remaster, and it wasn't a big budget title to begin with, but it's great that it's coming to the West. The games industry can't survive solely on big budget titles like Witcher 3, that took 5 years to develop and tens of millions of dollars, mid-range titles are the lifeblood of the industry, it makes sure we have a steady stream of games to play every month. That isn't to say there aren't big budget JRPGs, and we've been having a great resurgence lately, games like Nier: Automata and Persona 5. JRPGs in general over the last few years have begun stepping out of their niche and they are getting more mainstream attention, the genre is only going to continue to grow from here.

Played the demo, and I wasn't really sold. The gameplay was good enough, but the story was incredibly cliche from just the beginning, and I wasn't a way of how the cutscenes unfolded. If they all behaved the way the game did when the dragon is summoned and you escape, I'd be cool. But the portrait scenes? They were terrible, and I found myself too often laughing at the game. I might be skipping this one.

I truly regret playing this game. Most of it just feels lazy, half assed, and just a cash grab relying heavily on anime troupes. Fact is if you just love anything anime you could enjoy I personally hate when everyone loses their mind because a dragon is "raging" and for 10 minutes of dialog the dragon does NOTHING!
