Its actually nice to hear a positive review on this game for once. I know a lot of people have been bashing on this game because they want a return to the original shining force formula. Its nice to hear that there is a competent game and if its another entry to keep the shining series going than all the power to the developers for keeping it so.

It would be nice if they made specifically a new "Shining Force", even unrelated to the old ones (storywise). Then I would have no problem having lots and lots of Shining Mehs out there: they could be different things for diferent people. And I dont even say that Im right wishing a "true" Shining Force... but we love that game so much it hurts never being able to see some love for the formula that made it famous. In my case, its the game that started my love for videogames in general.

I loved all times of games, I do loved the 90's Shining Force Games(And even the gamegear and cd games) I would loved a new shining force game with the same style. BUT I also loved Shining Resonance, and with its style of game play, I would not have it any other way. Though battle wise, it feels more like FF13 with out the shifts if that makes sense.

*I just want to add that you can "date" the male characters as well, there are just less events for them. A larger emphasis is put on the female characters in most aspects of the game.* *Edit:* One angry person has misinterpreted my comments about performance so just to be clear - I think we are all pretty aware that the Switch doesn't output at 4K like the PS4 Pro does, and the Switch usually takes a 30fps hit (though SRR does feel smoother than 30fps to me for some reason). When I was talking about performance being pretty much the same I was referencing the slowdowns that appear on *both* consoles and how well they perform to their targets (very few resolution drops, mostly solid framerates). *You really aren't getting a vastly inferior Switch version in this case, your trade-offs for portability are more like I Am Setsuna than they are Wolfenstein II.*

in my opinion, the best part from this game is the battle system, other than that the game is just average. 1. the character customization is very lacking, there's only only tune up and equiping aspect. 2. the bond effect are too vague have very little effect, they're totally ignoreable, even when we try to use and try to check it's effect one by one on battle, it's very hard to spot what it does. 3. the skill effect design are very bad, i'd just prefer normal attack most of the time rather using damage skill because the skill animation are too slow, especially when my main is marion and yuma. 4. the world area too small, very small for an RPG. 5. the story, omg the cliche is just overwhelming, made me cringe so hard, same goes to the "date" system which doesnt have any effect at all, i just skip it altogether. if we look past the beautiful girls, this game is actually a meh....5, but again just an opinion :)

There's Casual and Normal difficulties, I switched to Casual to move through the game faster in order to get this review done and a good chunk of boss fights still posed a challenge on Casual difficulty.

Jay, just found your channel. I used to be a big JRPG and RPG nerd back from childhood on Apple II (Ultima, Wizardry, Bard's Tale) NES (FF of course but others are hard to recall) through PS1 & PS2 (sooooo many to name) but found that I could not invest the time later in life to spend 80+ hours on, well, anything including a single game. You are starting to get me interested in actually buying a PS4 (not a switch though ... I dunno it is not interesting to me but might have games I am into idk yet) for some of the titles you are reviewing. I do have a beast of a PC to use with 3 monitor setup and ... it is beast I won't bore you. I subbed to see what I have been missing so for me this is helpful. Maybe do a last few year recap, likes top 10 for each platform (PS, Switch, PC) so I can really catch up? Thanks from Florida!

Hey Jay let me ask. Since you say this is similar to the Tales series. Does this also mean your allies can gain EXP for your allies even though their not in battle. I ask this cause I don't want to go grinding all day so that my allies that were not in battle can catch up. If it's the case is there a way to EXP grind or have something that can help an ally gain EXP other then grinding?

How does the combat hold up throughout? I only played the demo on Switch and I found it pretty dull seeming. Are more mechanics added later to keep fights interesting? Are regular fights challenging at all, or are only bosses going to keep me from nodding off?

"Tales of" titles handle this gameplay hundreds of times better than this garbage. Shinning Resonance is also goddamn fucking easy. Thats the biggest flaw, in order to fail in this game you have to deliberately set out to fail on purpose. Its basically impossible to die unless you try.

@@airiakizuki5592 Lol no Shining Resonance Refrain is not easy the game gets Spike in difficulty in late game it becomes hard bosses hit like a truck you'll get one shotted *even in early game You'll get oneshotted/Two shotted by the boss if not careful* So you'll have to grind alot , Tales is the one that's garbage they even lie about *easy mode and it's non existence* While in *Shining Resonance Refrain it's a mix of hard and Normal combined so there's nothing to complain about* Casual and Standard mode is no different than each other in Shining And if you're going to say *Normal mobs are easy* Check the vid called *Shining Resonance Refrain Hit Maker How to Achieved a 99 hit Combo* The orc takes alot of time to die while there are easy mobs there are also hard mobs

Already ordered it. The demo was fun, combat felt good considering how early in the game it is (as with most games, battle becomes more fun as you progress and have more to manage.) I think the aesthetic is beautiful. There's some great design and attention to detail even in the menus and the characters really don't look out of place in a "modern" game. I certainly think they are as detailed as any other Switch game (which I suppose is right since the switch would be between the PS3 and PS4). The real question is do I keep playing Ys 8, I put it on hold for Shining Resonance, or do I make Octopath my priority? Spoilt for choice...

I saw this in the eshop I was thinking about buying it, since I liked the designs, but I was still on the fence about it so I was kinda waiting for you to review it, and so far from what you've said I'm sold. I have no problem at all with waifus, the designs are great and the Tales of series is one of my favorite game series ever, and it's also good to have something to do while we wait for Vesperia (and in my case KH3 too). There's a lot of games that are gonna keep me busy til then like Octopath, DQ11, spyro, Xenoblade chronicles 2 ( I have 200 hours on it and I just beat it yesterday and I still can't put it down)

Νοῦς Yeah, basically I found a nice easy grinding spot for rare and legendary cores and I got all blades around the 130 to 140 hour mark and then I was having so much fun doing side quests, exploring and completing affinity charts that time flew by. After all of that then I decided to beat the game, so yeah.

Last time Shining tried to mimic Valkyria Chronicles (Ark and Blade), before that, it was some odd isometric turn based chibi affair (Hearts), before that I dont even know because it wasnt localized (Wind), and before that it was Tears on PS2. Ever since Camelot left, Shining series has had an identity problem

I've been sitting on the fence with this one, but as Tales is also my favorite RPG series, it seems there's a good chance I may like it. Not sure if I'll pick it up on switch or ps4 though. I think its release being so close to Octopath Traveler might hurt it a bit though on switch. I'd probably buy it tomorrow if it wasn't for that, but because of it I'll probably end up holding off on this one until I at least clear Octopath's main story.

That's what I did for Ys VIII but I found myself playing docked 90% of the time and I constantly wished it was 60fps, so that's why I'm considering PS4 this go around. Still may go switch though in the end, though, still deciding.

The game itself will tell you not to start on Refrain mode. It's meant to be for a second playthrough.

I played both versions of the demo and really only noticed the fps difference - 30 vs. 60. This was evident during fast battles and panning the camera quickly. It was a tough decision to pick but since I don't plan on taking this portable, I went with PS4. Anyone who plans to play this during commutes won't lose out with the switch version.

Yeah the FPS is the only real difference but without playing both for comparison it doesn't feel like you're missing out on anything. You get the same weird slowdowns on both platforms which lead me to believe it's an engine-based issue (plus we've seen the same problem in a few other similar ports/remasters)

Does the male also have costumes or just the females? How much depth is put into the cities do they feel alive? Tales of Series is my favourite series too but when I played the demo of this it felt a bit disjointed I wonder if that's because of the portion they let you play?

Male characters get significantly less costumes than the female characters I'm afraid. Cities aren't overcrowded but there are definitely enough NPCs to talk to and make it feel like a real place. The very beginning (where the demo takes place) is kind of like a prologue in a way, the game very quickly moves along into the main narrative after that :)

Good review however i, personally, disagree with the battle system being similar to Tales combat. The combat systems for Tales is it's own unique thing (well the older ones anyway, you had a lot more control in juggling, aerial combat, long combos, etc in the system before arte trees)...as for the arte tree games it may be a bit closer but even so the attacks are all regulated to artes/special attacks in the arte tree games while Shining Resonance still has normal attacks. Personally it'd be closer to Dragon Quest Heroes or Radiata Stories combat (which is closer to the more generic action combat systems). With that said however i'm still picking it up tomorrow...been hoping this game would come out for a long time...just hope it's not too hot tomorrow since it's an hour/hour and half walk to the store where i reserved it. Also excited for Octopath Traveler at the end of the week.

I'll say this; I love fan-service as much as the next guy. BUT, when it's presented TOO much like rubbing it on the audience's face, I feel like it's treating them like idiots. So toning down on fan-service is a nice breath of fresh air.

Japanese wasn't available pre-release but I would have played in English anyway, I thought it was just fine with a few great performances.

I played tales of berseria but I didn't like the combat, even though I liked the story I just played half of the story from that game. But is the gameplay from this game the same as tales or should I stay away from this one? Thanks in advance.

Demonic Chaos Overlord I mean it’s got be a long running sega series for a reason right. . But maybe you should rent it or skip it. The demo really was slow had like one battle and slow tutorial

I havent played this game yet but most jrpgs like this start off slow. Tales of berseria started off really slow in the beginning then got insanely better
