Cannon vs. Pirate Ship: Shooting Projectiles from The Golden Age of Sail

Today we're shooting a stand in pirate ship hull with our revolutionary war style black powder cannon. Our stand in pirate ship is made out of 2" thick solid red oak planks, which represents the standard ship hull of the time which was between 2"-5" in thickness and was made out of a softer wood, usually elm or ash. We're going to be shooting the standard naval projectiles of the golden age of sail to see what kind of damage they would do to out stand in pirate ship hull. Bar shot, chain shot, lead cannonballs, steel and stone cannonballs, what kind of damage will they do to the hull? What kind of splinter damage will the hull do to someone on the ship? Let's find out!
A Bit of History: Pirate and merchant ships of the time didn't usually carry many cannons, if any at all, as they were designed to be fast and agile, utilizing hit and run tactics, so heavy and expensive cannons were not standard fare on the average pirate or merchant ship of the day. Pirates were also trying to capture ships and the valuable cargo onboard intact, so small, light, and significantly cheaper anti-personal robinet cannons were the standard cannons found on the majority of pirate and merchant ships for self defense against pirates or for use against the merchant ships.

I've had a few for the brick and concrete walls so that's for sure on the list and I've already built a cinderblock wall for an upcoming video. We have to be careful shooting at my parents range though as the neighbors get fussy so I can't shoot too many things that require build time and the other ranges. I also like the bundles of trees and I've had a few request for that one too. Thanks for tuning in!

From what I’ve read chain and bar shot was used for tearing up rigging and working on knocking over the trees while something like canister shooting dozens of rifle balls was used against personnel during boarding preparations. They’d fire canister to clear the decks then board with marine snipers in the trees firing down on targets of opportunity.
@TheCannoneer

Very very true! I’m working on a rigging and sail set up to try them against for the future so we can use them to their real purpose. I’ve heard they were also anti personal for chainshot but that sounds horrifying.

During the Battle of Valcour Island, Benedict Arnold, before he betrayed the US and when he was still a respected and very capable commander, took charge of a makeshift fleet of gunboats in an attempt to keep the British from coming south on Lake Champlain. On his gunboats, he took fascines, rolls of saplings about 1 inch thick and tied very tightly together, on average about 4-5 inches thick and he would hang just above where the cannons were to protect the gun crews from musket and small cannon fire. I wonder if the fascines could deflect a cannon ball smaller in size, say something from a 4 pounder or less since all the gun boats on Lake Champlain weren't huge ships of the line, but they used a couple cannons each and swivel guns.

Great video man, I've seen plenty of content about pirate ammo but it's very nice that you bring it to life ! For deck clearing pirates would have used *anything* they could shove in a canister and kept the lead for the muskets as they were favored over cannons but more conventional navies would have gone with lead or iron balls. The best sea service muskets available at the time would have been "fusils boucaniers", which are a type of French, very long-barreled muskets meant to have extended range to clear decks more efficiently while pistols, blunderbusses or shorter muskets were meant for boarding. Shells were hollowed cannonbals filled with gunpowder and fitted with a fuse lit by the ignition of the propellant charge. It is something you could replicate but please omit the powder in the balls and just stick a fuse in them if you replicate this, so as not to get hurt by the exploding ball. The goal would just be to check if the fuse will indeed ignite under these conditions. Red hot shot would have been a rarer but more effective way of sinking a ship, but it is very dangerous to replicate as the heated iron ball could set your charge off.

I’m going to make that wooden trash canister for you here soon too! I did some research on it and how they made it. I’ve wanted to do hot shot since I started the channel but I don’t quite know how to get it in the barrel without setting off the powder charge. I know they had specialized cannons just for that but that’s still scary! We can basically shoot anything legal at the new range so we might be able to get the explosive ones if we can get the channel big enough to get in someone with a license. I hope we can get a 3” field gun at some point and break some stuff! I always appreciate and learn from your comments and I do appreciate that you keep tuning in!

Quilted grape shot needs to be on the ammo list. Also "Hot Shot" at some point. (be very careful). Confetti shots are fun too. Also try a nice wad of steel wool on top of a shot and see the shower of sparks effect! You should also get a U shaped safety rammer(also called a crooked rammer)so your body is never in front of the bore while loading. It allows you use to "seat" the projectile and powder charge, from side of the gun, or standing just inside the wheel area.

@@TheCannoneer yes.... The object with solid spherical shot is to load a reduced powder load and bounce the round or 'skip' the shot across the ground so the shot bounds through the ranks of a unit about chest or head high. Another interesting historical tidbit...is the Turks skipping shot across the water at Byzantine ships bringing supplies to Constantinople
@TheCannoneer
@TheCannoneer 3 месяца назад
So we have a few different ranges that we shoot at and one of them has a rather large pond. I’ll ask and see if they are ok with us trying to skip some steel balls across it and see what happens! Don’t want to shoot lead in the water. I’ve been wanting to see if you can skip them like the patriot for a while but I never knew they were called bounding shots. Back in the day they used wooden pucks for just that purpose behind everything, although you don’t really need it unless you’re shooting loose shot like the musket balls or silverware. Solid balls just need a patch at the most and they seal quite well. As for the wooden cup they also did that too!
