Today we're shooting some 3d printed 37mm tank rounds, used in the World War 2 M3 Stuart tank and the M3 anti tank gun, out of our revolutionary war style black powder cannon. All of the print are printed using PLA with 100% infill so they are completely solid. We've got hollow solid PLA rounds, lead filled sabot style rounds, and lead filled and lead tipped rounds to test out against some vehicles. How will they withstand the cannon pressure? How accurate are they? Let's find out!

All interesting shots. Smoothbore will almost always keyhole a non spherical projectile. There's a fix, Armour Piercing Fin Stabilised Discarding Sabot round. The sabot should be printable, some clever casting might make an effective penetrator 😊

The bore needs rifling if it doesn't have it. I am sure you know. Some shotgun slugs have rifling. So a little rifling can be put on the actual projectile. To make it spin and avoid the keyhole. That might be easier than rifling the entire bore.
@TheCannoneer
@TheCannoneer 3 месяца назад
We’ve actually played around with some “rifled” printed projectiles and they seem to be fairly stable for a decent distance. I made some in lead to see if we can replicate it although I haven’t had a chance to shoot them yet.
@andrewom679

@@TheCannoneerA rifling band might do and be simpler than the whole thing being rifled. Also, sabots and fins are an option.

The M1 Abrams battle tank has a smooth bore. Look into fin stabilized sabot rounds...😎
@Paul-st2wv
@Paul-st2wv 3 месяца назад
The "rifling" on a Foster slug doesn't actually make the slug spin. Or it doesn't make it spin fast enough to make any real difference anyway. That's kinda a misnomer. The bands are actually there as reliefs so they can squeeze through the chokes that are common on many shotguns. They are designed to easily squish down and prevent a jam in the choke.
@michaelabraham9177

I've 3d printed Diablo slugs for a 50 cal. You just scale them up in the printer using cura. Diablo slugs are stabilized very well in air rifles, and taofladermaus (youtube) has shot Diablo slugs from smooth bore 12 gauge, and also a rifled one. Assuming it scales up good like they have it'd be great in a smooth bore canon too.

This type of projectile requires rifling in order to be accurate. For smoothbores you need to look at fin-stabilised projectiles. Two choices on that front are: small fins and (very) high velocity. AKA the APFSDS or 'discarding Sabot' type projectile or low velocity with long, thin pop-open stabilising fins. This is the approach used for HEAT warhead projectiles fired from smoothbore gun barrels. Now a 'spinning' HEAT round is usually undesirable but you could take the approach that some aircraft rockets do and angle the fins so that air pressure induces a slow 'spin' in the projectile providing an improvement in accuracy similar to rifling.
@knivesiguess
@knivesiguess 3 месяца назад
Soooooooo I just had a weird idea. Pack some spices between the powder load and the projectile and see what it both looks like and smells like when fired. Possibly flour and/or powdered coffee creamer or protein powder to see if you can get a big fireball as well.

Awesome video, this is one of my favorite new channels. I had expected it to keyhole because the cannon isn’t rifled. It was interesting to see the rounds break apart and hit the target at different times. I’d love to see a fin stabilized discarding sabot round but I suspect that if using 3d printed parts, the round would separate in the barrel and we might see similar key holing effects as in this video. Maybe use a sabot similar to a shotgun wad instead of the petals that fall off after the round leaves the barrel like with modern tank rounds. It would be fun to see the trial and error of building such a round.

Thank you! Look like I’m going to be firing up the 3D printer! There’s a version of a tank sabot round that’s super fancy I think I’ll start working with and see what happens. I just recently saw a 1700’s version of a folding sabot for tearing up ship rigging that I want to recreate too.

@@TheCannoneer maybe you can 3d print parts, put them in some casting sand, and then pour molten metal to make a version of it that is more structurally stable.. like an armor piercing dart made of some metal, with 3d printed petals or what have you. of course, this might require a number of materials, and extra effort for each shot, but it's just a thought.

Algorithm treat : These are really nice rounds. The PLA seems to hold together under the intense forces of the launching process but it looks like the lead cores are separating from the body of the rounds. Maybe some backing with a steel plate could help. For the keyholing part it's normal since these rounds are intended for rifled barrels. The amount of experiments that can be done in order to refine the designs is incredible this channel can litterally never run out of material. Good luck man, you have the possibility to do something great. I wish I had a cannon but it's illegal here.

Where do you live? Even in Germany, where I live, you can own a functional front and back loading cannon, if it's built before 1870/71 because they're not considered weapons of war anymore. Even without a permit. Which is kinda crazy for Germany. You know, rules and all. Edit: you can also build one yourself, metal pipes are easy enough to get, just need one thick enough, black powder is easy enough to do yourself as well. And Canon balls out of led are also easy poured yourself, just need led, something to heat it up and a form. The only difficult part is the breach or how you close one part of the barrel. Because if you don't do that one right you'll get a recoilless rifle and that isn't good for your health if you didn't intend for it.

@@victormartin2774 my French isn't as good as it once was, but as how I understand it, you can own any "firearm" that isn't operated with smokeless powder, thus black powder, that were made before 1900, even without a permit. I'm guessing, there is an exception for artillery cannons, but I can't find anything about that... But 20 mm isn't so bad, but I doubt you can own a 20 mil orlicon cannon...

Awesome video! Well done! Love to see some higher speed video of the rounds but high speed cameras are expensive. 😕 I saw another channel post how 3D prints can be filled with plaster to make them similar to ceramic and heavier. Doing that with these prints may give an interesting result if you're willing to shoot them. I'd try printing with zero bottom layers, 10% gyroid infill, and 3 to 5 walls. That should allow the plaster to be poured in from the bottom and maintain its shape. Thinking about it, small enough lead bird shot may also fit between the infill, then plaster. Could also experiment with rifled round designs. Thanks for making the video!

Nice to see the weights being tested! Do you still have the models for the rounds that were the most accurate rounds from the last 3d printed video? I was thinking about you taking the one that was most accurate from each, andnthen start changing where you place the weights/how much weight may affect the accuracy. This can be done by making a internal sled with a hole in different areas along it, to hold the weight in place while it travels

Awesome video. It looks like the lead is separating from the PLA that’s why things are hitting at different speeds. Try it again but this time also poor about a 1/2” of lead for the base. That way the pressure is pushing on the lead and shouldn’t blow the PLA off the core.

@ajorsomething4935
@ajorsomething4935 Месяц назад
Not sure if anyone commented this yet but PLA is a rather weak filament for 3d printing and is likely to shatter or break apart when firing. I wouldn't be suprised if you're getting a hunk of plastic going down range instead of the properly shaped projectile. Also it appears that long rod of lead separates during flight. I would like to see this repeated where you only do the outer layer of printing and use it as a jacket to cast a lead projectile inside, similar to the copper jacket of a bullet.

I have a mini napoleon cannon about 3rd scale I think, has a 1 inch bore. Nice to see u do this. I had thought to do it myself. Just want to say a few possible not wanting to say advice since iam not a expert at all. Showing the rounds it was very back and forth all over. So go like it’s a turntable like motion while explaining. People seem to like comparison a lot.. so try to put them side by side or Picture in Picture thing. With the rounds underneath. Or add shots on more frangible targets . Always fun to watch in slow motion. Or show the round and name before you fire. Stuff like that. Might help or not just what I noticed in general and it’s what I thought would be better as I watched.

the leadcored ammo is just dissintegrating in the barrel, the pla cant push the lead with that much force, so ur just shooting the pla of the lead and then the lead projectile carries behind it at much lower speeds, thats why there was such a huge delay on the first lead filled shot, first the plastic hit the door then the lead core went trough

I'm guessing that cannon is smooth bore G1 and G7 style projectiles won't stabilize and will fly erratic (football shaped) attempt to do the same experiment with fin stabilized discarding sabot (sub caliber dart) Bias the weight to the front of the dart You can also attempt to do this with a DS type round where instead of a dart you will use something more akin to a air rifle pellet and have a sabot around it to make it sub caliber
@TheCannoneer

Those are some seriously tumbling rounds, almost every single shot landed sideways :P But the impact ofc was massive regardless due to the lead. Yet I feel greater penetration could be made if they hit on the nose rather than the sides, Normal cannonballs might be superior without the rifling.
@TheCannoneer
@TheCannoneer Месяц назад
I didn’t think plastic would leave a hole like that at all. Someone suggested we load them with rocket motors and we did that in a later video as well. Those seem to fly a bit straighter and the hole they leave is insanely huge. Thanks for tuning in!

@@TheCannoneer Anything launched at high enough speed will punch a hole. Be it plastic, wood, iron, or even softer materials like rubber. Rockets might stabalize the flight somehow, rifling ofc would help. My best bet would be some sort of shaped fin system that utilizes the gasses from the cannon to spin, Although you would have to shape them perfectly..The conclusion being, round shot for none rifled cannons is superior. Yet have you seen how Golf balls look? Perhaps if you made a cannon ball to look like a golf ball with those dips over the surface it might help with both accuracy and range. Just a thought. I am no scientist, not even a school graduate, yet if it works for golfballs it might just work for cannonballs too.
