Justin Orenduff (formerly of Baseball Rebellion) showcases how the pitching delivery changes when a pitcher lands on the heel compared to landing on the ball of the foot.

Outstanding video! Finally, some quality detail.

Thanks for the great explanation. I knew this was a question, but didn't know the answer. A simpler way of explaining this is: To land on the heel, the stride has to be longer. The rest follows from this. The body has to stop to impart the force to the ball. When the tibia makes the angle to the ground, the backwards force slows the body. This also changes the timing as the longer stride forces the upper body to wait until the center of mass gets to the release point. Thanks again.

Good stuff. Javelin coaches have known for a long time that heel or flat foot strike allows hips to drive into the "block" leg (baseball, QBs, and jumpers call it plant) instead of around or over. This directs the burst of energy to flow through the chain instead of stopping at the knee. Javelin throwers try to keep front side as straight as possible from heel to head.

And most high velocity pitchers back foot comes off the ground on or before real ease of the ball. Check out any videos from past time athletics.

Sorry my friend, that the first thing u should look at is the stride length. U changed stride length that's why your knee is under your foot. If your stride length would have remained the same it would not matter if your heel or the front of the foot hit first.

omg just get to your point already

Arm should be half cooked at landing rather then full cocked, just saying......Top velocity.

Baseball Houston Top velocity sure. Exponentially increased injury risk, you betcha. Creating timing problems for the sake of velocity is a bad idea. That has played a major role in the increase in elbow injuries over the last few years. Look at what happened to Wacha. It boosted his velocity, but it also put him on the DL. If he doesn't fix his timing issue, he will be spending a lot more time on the DL in the future.

Correct Timing is everything. When you develop the momentum the body has to be in a correct position to take that momentum and force and transfer it into Velocity. RU-vid top velocity and follow some of Brent's analysis from the Sports Medicine Journals on high velocity pitchers. I believe data beats opinions. Having specific parts of the body in the correct positions at foot contact is crucial. Stabilizing the front leg, hip to shoulder seperation, arm external rotation, trunk flexion, extention and supination - truly a remarkable motion for a human. Keep up your good work. Landing with what Chris O'Leary likes to call "flat arm" puts more strain on the shoulder and elbow. It can cause hyper angulation of the shoulder and it's what almost every injury prone pitcher does

Land near the toe if you know: the heel is less than ideal.

Cannot believe you think a heel strike is proper mechanics. Teaching this is irresponsible as I see it. Just to point out watching your comparison video, that is closer to a flat strike than a heel strike. Actually all your examples are closer to a flat strike. Now having said that l am more concerned that they keep the toe generally pointed down as it is a more relaxed position. The first thing any kid is going to do is hit with an exaggerated motion and hit with their heel and their toe pointed up which causes control issue.

coach s but if you land on your heel you activate stronger muscles in your leg rather then if your land on your toes you only activate your calf
