My past was... not good. Dark humor has helped me cope with some very difficult. Laughing at my own pain has kept me alive. Laughing at another person's pain is cruelty.

That’s exactly how it works. When my father was dying of cancer, we made him laugh. He used to be the reason we had to make ourselves laugh, & then, became his court jesters. You were safe if he laughed. So our training was greatly to his advantage, in the end. We also made sure we showed him grace and forgiveness at the end. But we were funny. It sounds like you know that tragedy is the great secret of comedy, as well.

My dad has been a respiratory therapist for 20 years now. He has a dark sense of humor because he has seen some terrible things. I love my dad, and all his jokes Also love the BTS. That was an incredible rant 😂

My sophomore year of highschool there were school shooting threats going around on Instagram during the school day. Most of the kids who could drive left. Those who couldn't, their parents picked them up. By the time I got to 5th period there were six kids out of twenty something. The sub questioned why the low number, and when we told her she left. SHE. JUST. LEFT. US. We were six highschool kids in a class with no teacher scared for our lifes. Dark humour was 100 precent a coping mechanism. Said some stuff about school schoolings that would definitely get me cancalled. Just sometimes if you can laugh at something it doesn't seem so scary anymore.

I’m sorry, she LEFT?! She pulled a full lawyer in Jurassic Park? I hope she was blacklisted from teaching because as tragic as it is, protecting your kids is part of the job. Source: credentialed teacher. I can’t imagine that. We’d bunker down and play Uno that class period. I am furious for you.

Dark Humor is necessary to deal with deep dark scary subjects. Veteran here. Soldiers have a very special strain of dark humor for dealing with the stresses of service. It's an important outlet for venting those emotions and putting them in context.

I'm with Ben. Sunday brunch is about getting people you really like into a room where you can eat until you are bursting on things you wouldn't eat the rest of the week. Brunch with mimosas and fruit is for people who can afford it, not the vast majority of working class America. Instead, we want it cheap, fast, and plenty. In most cases, it's something people do to catch up (usually the mimosa crowd) or the church crowd (Goes both ways). But I have never seen a happier bunch of people than the ones who go to a place with limitless waffles and bacon. Everybody wears elastic waist pants and greets everybody in the restaurant like a long lost cousin. If you go to the same place 3 weeks in a row, you are going to be related. Not sure how that happens, but it does.

Haven’t watched the video yet, but in response to the title - I don’t think in any way it should be off limits. But I will say there’s a very fine line between dark humor and just being offensive to a marginalized group. If you aren’t part of the group yourself I’m not saying you shouldn’t make the joke at all, but you SHOULD run it past people in said group first

Dark humour is often very theraputic to those who have experience in the situations joked about. It turns the worst experiences in life into something to laugh about and brings people away from dark, depressing thoughts. Those who have been hurt the most tend to have the darkest senses of humour in my experience. Two of the hardest days in my life were made bearable by dark humour. The day my father died and the day my siblings and i buried him. We all were making highly inappropriate jokes the entire time as a coping mechanism. To make ourselves laugh more than anything but making our siblings laugh was a bonus. Those who get offended by dark humour are usually people who have no experience with the situation and are trying to show empathy towards those who have by getting offended on their behalf. My advice to everyone is to remember if you are offended by a dark joke to be thankful that the experience is something you havent had and this is a coping mechanism for many people to make life more bearable.

“No”…But with the caveat: 1. You have to take into consideration WHO you are…IF you can pull it off (in many, many ways and areas of life and experiences) or risk getting cancelled. 2. You don’t take it *too* far (it isn’t straight up hate speech, yelling fire in a theatre and other dumb stuff like that). 3. Not considering your audience might be problematic (For instance, you don’t make an obnoxious joke about the government/response on 9/11 to a group of First Responders for The FDNY).

Christopher Titus is absolutely brilliant. You’ll be rolling and then BAM he hits you with something so real and so painful and then he’ll hold your hand and lead you back to finding the funny in those experiences. Life is hilarious and incredibly hard and painful and he’s got that balance down pat.

I love the ability to cope using dark humour. My dad died in 2020 and I still get people who say "sorry for your loss" when they find out. I've always been at a loss as to how to respond to that, so I've taken to saying "It's ok. You didn't kill him." which gets a laugh about 75% of the time.

Before even starting this, I’ll see if y’all agree with me. I think that the worse the pain, the greater the mystery, and the more helpless we feel, that’s when we most need to laugh. I’m so thrilled to see Ben, too!

Used to be, in this country, that dark humor would spring up just days after a national tragedy, it was part of our coping mechanism. For instance, just days after the space shuttle Challenger exploded in 1986, jokes sprang up about one of the astronauts on board the shuttle. 9/11 took away our ability to joke about national tragedies. Just ten years after that horrible day, I told a 9/11 joke and was told that it was very distasteful. With that said, our national maturity has dropped. The best example of that is the phrase "That's what she said." Say those four words and people start laughing hilariously. So, in 1970, when I was ten years old "That's what she said." was my favorite joke for a few weeks, and then after saying those four words I was pulled aside and told, "That's immature and stupid." So, if it was immature and stupid in 1970, then I can only presume that adults today have the EQ of a nine year old in 1970.

Dark humor is very helpful. If you dont like it… don’t watch that comedian. It’s very beneficial for the mental health of others. Different branches of the apple tree. Do what’s best for you… but that doesn’t mean others can’t enjoy dark humor.

21:33 That is the basis of most comedy. Comedians use logic to build up to the punchline, but then stop using logic to make the punchline super funny. That's why the audience laughs so hard, because the punchline was unexpected and so ridiculous.

Do you mean the cardboard box of un matched socks I refuse to match cus childhood turama 😅 takes me like 10 mins to find a pair but it's worth not having to go threw that stuff again (I'm the middle child also the only one in my family with autism and one of my "chores" as a kid was matching my entire family of 5 socks my mom would come over to me turn off the TV and dump like 3 laundry baskets of socks in front of me and I wasn't aloud to do anything else until they where all matched some times it would take the entire weekend 😢)

Answering the question in the title, I say no. Maybe be careful about what you say like definitely but also for the part of the audience who don’t like dark humor comments then don’t go to that comedy show. If you are familiar with what kind of jokes that comedian makes then don’t go to their shows.

Not to be negative at all, but this guy's story is not the story of a famous hilarious comic s story. Clearly he has never heard of Richard Pryor or Dave Chappelle, because they were younger than him and weren't bombing and much better.

Went through 2 of my friends basically ending their own lives. There’s always a fine line between joking and genuinely being a dick. You should at least know your audience beforehand, don’t obviously make a dark joke to a grieving mother. Time and place and situational awareness is key.
