Really Im just glad Wout had the brains to just give up the stage rather than to risk his life. When you are on a sprint, things happen so fast and decisions have to be made in miliseconds. Kudos to Wout for his good reaction.

It would be good if the UCI applied a rule to themselves: *The barriers must be perfectly straight in the last 100 metres.* And with parrallel red lines superimposed onto the overhead shot, any deviation by the winner of 2+ metres is instant disqualification. Very easy to implement all of this.

Every year there is still a wrong finish in the Tour. At the finish they could improve a lot. Like they use Boplan barriers in Flemish races, for example, which are much stronger, safer and separate the public from the riders much better. Time to make some quick changes there if you ask me! Yes, he was moving into WvA's line. In Wout's view it looked like the opening was being closed by JP. It caused him to back off his sprint. @@fanda6122 Talk about motivated reasoning...it's obvious your unrequited love for Jasper has clouded your vision and power of discernment. None of your arguments make any sense. Moving away from his lead out 15 feet to the right after spotting Wout coming up on his side was not "incidental", and Jasper doesn't get to "choose" the whole road as his "LANE(NOT LINE)". "Choose a better line"???, it's obvious it doesn't matter what line anyone chooses if Jasper the disaster is in the same finishing sprint and he spots you, because he's going to do whatever he can to use the barriers as his silent stationary teammate and push you into them knowing they can't and won't move until he pushes someone into them all the way. If the Alpecin lead out was so perfect why did Jasper need the whole road to block other riders on both sides of it....because that's the kind of rider he is....happy to be dangerously unfair to his fellow competitors. He was more interested in blocking other riders he knew could beat him to the line, than staying tucked in behind his "perfect lead out". To say what Jasper did neither impeded nor endangered Wout means you're simply blind, and then following that up with an even dumber statement about Wout's responsibility to position himself in the front more safely...that's really about as stupid as it gets.

Right, it's a tough one to call. Because as you said he is taking the quickest line through the bend, but in doing so put Van Aert at risk (he knew he was right next to him). In that sense for me it's a relegation. I'm not too fussed about him swerving to the barriers afterwards, when the road straightens out, because in my opinion it is due to the shoulder barge of Van Aert that unbalanced him. We've seen enough bad crashes in cycling in recent years, when will the riders stop using dodgy techniques and putting others and themselves (rip Gino) at risk for results. It's just not worth it

Nice to watch scenery for hours, EF has the same start as they did last year basically. Sprint route wasnt planned good, snaking it all up the last K, you can see that espacially from deceuninck hesitation from Fabio and Mørkøv and trek as well. The dq question is a bit loose this year, seeing Skjelmose and Bettiol from yesterday, imo to keep the line, prob should have been a dq. Another sprint stage tomorrow, another chance. Phillipsen deserved to win. He was faster. Wout made a big gamble with his line. He must seen that curve and the bend on right side of the road. So Wout thought that he could outsprint Jasper and be first in the bend. If so, Jasper needed to go left and take the longer line. In that case Wout could maybe win but he lost the sprint to that bend and backed off. He knew that he had lost. Wout did not even protest so much because he know that his gambe did not pay off. Why did Wout try this? Well, he knows that in straight line sprint he cannot win Jasper and the other real sprinters. Wout is not pure sprinter, so he had to try something else. It did not pay off, Jasper read his game and took the win.

All the replays showed that he stayed in a relative straight line ( as much as you can go straight during a FULL Sprint ) If you look at the dashed line on the left of JP he was following that line. The course and barrier intruded into the course at the wrong moment for WvA.

Tough one to call, I like jasper philipsen, but I can see why he was in question. My problem with this is that the kink in the barriers was apparently obscured by the tree, well, from what I can make of it Van Aert was already through that bit before he started slowing down. There's no denying philipsen did come in close to the barrier. Possibly cutting off van Aert, but it looks to me like Van Aert van had already given up when philipsen started moving over. I'd also question whether it was intentional, or whether philipsen was simply trying to keep control and balance whilst sprinting through that turn.

I think it should've been regulated, but beyond that point, I wonder if a potential safety solution would be to have like a 1 meter wide "no man's land" painted between the riders and the physical barrier. All rules about holding your line stay the same, but crossing the line to pass is automatic DQ. Might discourage some of the more risky moves to thread the inside needle. Could be challenging to set up with some the roads already being quite narrow, but if it limits guys hitting the wall at 70 kmh, might be worth looking at.

Yes, should be a relegation. At what point will we ever get to see a fair spint between the best in the world? Isn't that the whole point of racing? I understand shifting the blame to the organisers for a poor course, but everone knows what the course will be like well in advance. The sprinters especially know what the finish line looks like. So they know when and where to move over. As long as the strategy of shutting the door is a successful one, riders will keep doing it.
