Should Kids Watch Scary Movies 

I am SO in the “stop with the remakes” camp. Have they no imagination or talent left to write new horror movies??

Know your kid! My oldest is 10 but has ADHD which presents strongly with emotional dysregulation. As a result her emotions have always had a megaphone in her brain. She watched a made for kid “horror” show (think Goosebumps, it’s rated Y7). Still she had a nightmare and her fear amplified to full blown panic. It took her a solid 4 months before she could successfully sleep through the night in her own room again AND she’s been in therapy weekly since last summer to help with this anxiety and her ADHD executive functioning needs. She’s not a candidate for horror films at this point. Her younger sister is 6 and currently doesn’t like movies with bad guys in it. Including Disney movies she has watched many times over. Take their lead and see how they feel about it. It’s not something to force.

People with ptsd, high anxiety etc tend to watch horror movies. So, when someone says to me I love horror films. I'm like, " what's your childhood trauma" 😅

I sit with the grandkids during horror movies and have since they were little. We explain to them special effects, CGI, makeup and we research the making of movies any chance we get. Reality will not slip by these kids 😂

Depends on the child and their level of understanding. I'll let my oldest watch videos on Spirit Halloween and things like that, but super creepy movies, nope! I will allow that when he's ready and tells me he's ready

As a kid I was terrified of the dark. When I was 12 I watched my first horror and was so scared I had to sleep in my parents’ room for a week. Now I love horrors. I would want my kids to not be afraid of horrors. But a lot of horrors have sex, nudity and bad language in it. And that’s a whole controversy on its own

Our littles loves lots of movies but both got to 5/6 years old and decided they didn’t like “bad guys” in movies. Even if it’s their favorite movie that they’ve seen a thousand times. I think it’s important to support them and hear them but ultimately don’t force them if they aren’t ready.

Due to horror films I have paranoia to this day and I am in my mid twenties. It's to the point there I almost got schizophrenia diagnosis by my psychiatrist, but instead i was sent to therapy.

I thought I was scared of scary movies until I was in college. I did have a guided introduction with my dad on Saturdays of watching soft r rated movies together, so we could discuss parts that might bother me. We didn't watch just horror, but I remember watching a good chunk of the Nightmare on Elm Street series. I remember watching the Butterfly Effect together, and he didn't want me to watch the unrated cut, (I did in secret) but this is an example of where he wanted a line drawn as to what he didn't want me exposed to yet. I'm really glad he spent that time with me before I got busy with friends and school things, a few short years before he passed unexpectedly. When I found out I was brave enough to watch scary movies on my own, I couldn't get enough. I lived on my own near woods, so those movies were off-limits for me during that time.

My stepdad let me watch Killer Clowns from Outer Space when I was 5, then Chucky (not sure which one) when I was 6 and then I was 10 when I saw IT. They all terrified the hell out of me and I still hate horror movies hahaha! After IT, I was so traumatized that I covered the shower drain until I went to college 😂

Fun story. I love horror movies. But the first "scary" movie I ever watched was Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom. I was in love with Indiana Jones. But then my mom made the mistake of thinking Watership Down was "just a bunny movie" I was 8 and loved it.

Yes my sister and I were watching scary movies at a young age I was like 6 or 7 and to this day scary movies are my favorite 😊

The last two horror movies I watched was when I was 12 (many years ago) to say I was traumatized was an understatement. For reference they were The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Omen. That being said some people say that my all time favorite movie is scary (the Wizard of Oz) As much as those movies scare me, I would be very tempted to visit that ice cream store! I was 2-3yo when my parents showed me Poltergeist. To this day, even the opening theme music affects me and the movie actually scares me.

I've always had a very high tolerance for horror movies and shows, I grew up watching and reading goosebumps and the haunting hour. While those scared me as a kid (especially the one about the girl's mom that turned into a cat) they don't any more for obvious reasons, but my fear of normal horror movies died with my fear of those. I get tense and will jump at the jump scares, but they don't keep me up at night and I just think they're cool. I think I just instinctively know that they aren't real and can't hurt me, I can't suspend my disbelief for long enough to make me think so in the moment. I can't play horror games though, I'll stick to watching them.

I had 3 movies when I was young that traumatized me... Return of the living dead gave me major fears zombies were coming for my brain and I damn lived next to a cemetery. Then I was scared for a short time of Chucky...and last was Darkness Falls, I was losing my damn last teeth during that movie lmao, I slept with a flash light for weeks!

When I was a kid, I was afraid of A LOT OF THINGS! Anxiety, depression, and autism will do that to you I guess. I would get freaked out by the mere mention of ghosts, and What's New Scooby-Doo was my favorite show but some episodes I had to look away because they scared me so bad. One episode with a Smart House trying to kill everyone that laughed so creepyoly, another with Shaggy turning into godzila with werewolf rules (i made my older brother skip that episode entirely, the thought of something huge chasing you was so terrifying to me), and one opening where people were people were trapped in a pyramid with walls closeing in and they got sucked INTO THE WALLS. My mom still makes fun of me for it. Anyway, when I was like 10 or 12 I was in a stage where I wasn't scared of those things anymore, but also wanted to be scared. So I hard that the 1973 movie The Exorcist was apparently "the scariest movie of all time" so I watched it, home alone, in the dark. I laughed through most of it. It was probably a combination between "those effects are so fake!" and "Haha little girl says the C word in a deep voice lol". Afterwards I guess I was like "you know, if I watched tHe sCaRiEsT MoViE Of aLl tImE and wasn't phase, I CAN WATCH ANYTHING!" Then came Paranormal Activity movies, the Insidious movies, the Conjuring universe, the Halloween movies, Nightmare on Elm Street, The Blair Witch Project and even the SAW movies. I can always tell when jumpscares are going to pop up so they don't phase me at all. There's only been a handful of horror movies that genuinely scared me in the sense that that they stuck with me. Like The Shinning, Lights Out, Mama (I sobbed like a baby at the end), Brightburn, Hereditary, Don't Breathe, Us, Mother!

I watched The Shining and The Fog when I was 5. At some point I watched some kind of Dracula because I remember a nightmare I had about my mom about to get bitten I woke up screaming because it was so real to me I thought it was happening. At 9 I was at a slumber birthday party for an older girl and we watched Nightmare on Elm St, Halloween and Friday the 13th. So now I am 46 and still have horrible nightmares but in all fairness half of them are stress dreams.

I let my son watch horror movies, before he started watching them we watched the SciFi show Face Off to show him how "monsters" are made. I also showed him bloopers of when people "die"in movies so he knew things were not real.

I'm not a an adult nor a parent, but I am still in high school. I had joined a horror movie club at my school and I, at first, loved it. Hell, I got three of four Hannibal movies because they were on my bucket list AND I even got to see Psycho in that club. However, I ended up quitting after the movies became more and mroe scary for me. It started with the horror movie "Nope" and the momkey scene, then the horror movie "Rec" (It was in a different language but it scared me so bad that I had to leave during a scene and hide out in the bathroom for a few minutes), and then we had a horror movie fest where people picked out short horror films from RU-vid...and a week later, I quit the club because I could barely sleep then. What my mom did at the start of this whole club-joining thing is that she made sure I was actually committed to trying before I jumped in and let me know that I can talk to her if I need too. That's how I think parents should introduce horror movies to their kid's curious minds: talk to them to make sure they really want to see them, start them off slow and build up, and offer them comfort if they get scared or want to talk about how they felt about it. Yup The Exorcist was my 1st horror movie at 8 years old. (My dad watched it with me as I was covering my eyes lol) I have not watched it thru to this day... I'm 37.

Pet Sematary was my first horror watch, I think. I have very traumatic memories around the sister all twisted up and screaming "Rachel" 😭😂. Also, King's "Rose Red" is one of my all time favorites.

My first horror movie was it at a friends house for a sleepover and we were dying laughing when Georgie’s arm got bitten off, but then we screamed because of a mouse ran across the floor 😂😂

I have watched all sorts of horror films since I was very little on my own. Was that probably the best? No. Am I okay? Yes. But I loved this real talk. Like the gateway and interesting takes on ones for littler kids. Like clowns from outer space. Outlandish low budget horror is a good idea! My idea was monster movies.

Legend (1985) is a great first 'scary' movie. Of course, when I watched it as a small child I was enamored with Darkness and the black dress dance... Also reading old school fairy tales from Hans Christian Anderson and The Brothers Grimm.

I got full blown arachnophobia thanks to my Dad showing me Eight Legged Freaks when i was like...7. Saturn 3 also freaked me to Hell and back, not that I understood most of it beyond "robot stalks and tries to kill scientists in space" till I was older. Also showed me The Exorcist and I had endless nightmares for a solid month around the same age. Very much did not have a "This isn't real, it can't hurt you." convo. My Mom did that when I'd come home, and be freaked. He thought it was hysterical how frightened I'd get, so he tormented me till I learned to hide it, or to redirect his attention. The Blob also scared me. I got to this one scene where a man was being eaten in his chair and literally never got past it, to this day. I reclaimed horror for myself, throughout the years thankfully. My Creepypasta phase in my teens helped a surprising amount, particularly the webseries EverymanHYBRID, and Marble Hornets. I'll always have a soft spot for and return to that fandom. It's just one of my comfort places. After that; I found Heathers which is a dark comedy but i liked the darker elements enough to go down the rabbit hole of horror. I binged all the Halloween and Scream movies. Scream is my number 1 horror movie now, and probably always will be, but I'm happy to say I adore horror now, even with all the trauma. 🤣

My first horror movie was Child's Play 2. I was about 6... And my brother had a My Buddy Doll- that looked exactly like Chucky. 😱 The next day, we took that doll out on the front lawn and tore it apart!

I was 12 & my baby sitter brought The Birds around for us to watch. I was nervous around flocks of birds greater than two for a good while after. The Next week it was Children of the Corn. I live in a village in the countryside surrounded by crop fields and birds. I will still avoid walking through corn and I’m very aware of birds behaving oddly. But your absolutely right, Scooby is the gateway dog. I still enjoy a bit of Scooby. My daughter was so lucky. She was about 6 when we got Buffy, Charmed and then Supernatural. The Mummy came out. Then the Harry Potter Books and films started being released around her birthday and then my great love Supernatural. I think it helped that I use to play Resident Evil on the PS1 when my daughter and my best friends two children were supposed to be playing. They invented a new game called ‘Zommies’. I had my son when my daughter was 6, so he was more into Supernatural, but he preferred watching Ghost Adventures etc. But when I was working a late shift and my daughter was supposed to be baby sitting, I found out from his English teacher that one of his favourite films was the Human Centipede. Closely followed by Saw. Thankfully his teacher was a family friend and she knew my son was too practical minded to be scared by these films. Although I was horrified because even I won’t watch the Human Centipede. That’s one sick point too far for me. I really love creature features, from Jaws to the Meg, 8 legged Freaks to Lavalantula, Snakes on the plane to Lake Placid. And yup, I like Sharknado, Black Sheep and any ridiculous film that involves bigfoot. The Alien & Predator Films are comfort films. I can put them on when I’m feeling yuck and shut my eyes but still know exactly what’s going on. I still don’t think I’ve watched the Exorcist all the way through, but I blame my parents for that. My dad took mum to see it when she was pregnant with me. My daughter did ‘accidentally’ watch Dawn of the Dead, she misread the listing and thought she had put on Shaun of the dead. I came home from work to find a spatula on the shelf by the front door. My daughter has got a bit jumpy because of the film and thought that would be a good weapon. Not sure why she didn’t take any of my big chefs knives, but that’s my daughter for you. Sadly my fella isn’t a horror fan. I got him to watch ‘the Sand’ a couple of years ago & Zombeavers last year. He still isn’t a fan of horror & I have no chance of getting him to watch the new Insidious film. I enjoy all the Conjuring/Annabelle films, but I was disappointed with The Nun. So here’s hoping the new one is good. I don’t like clowns, it took a long time to watch it, but Stitches is also a good film. I’m not sure if I like terrifier or not. I’ve watched it a few times and still can’t decide. I really enjoyed the tv series Slasher. They were good. I think Creature features and good old fashioned Slashers are my favourite. But the old films really annoy me because the girls always just stand there for like 10 minutes screaming instead of poking the assailants eyes out and running away. Probably hey Buffy was such a big hit. Well, that & the young David Boreanaz. And Not bring too much of a fussy person I’ll take both the Winchesters please and thank you. Anyway, enough chatting about my favourite genre of films. It’s your fault for starting the subject. Lol Cool ice-scream bar. Shame I’m in the U.K. lol. I think I’m going to watch season 1 of Supernatural now. Again 😊❤

Halloween and Alien, are the most scary. You cant change my mind. I saw both at a cery young age, 5 and 6, and they traumatized me.

My first scary movie I remember sneaking into my livingroom when I was suppose to be sleeping hiding under the coffee table to watch the puppet master. The first one that stuck with me was final destination. I still have moments where i cant listen to john denver or get paranoid when behind a logging truck or truck hauling cars. Natural disaster movies and movies like saw get to me

My stepdad took me and my sister to watch Halloween in the theater while my mom was bowling. We had been begging to see it and she said Hell No! We were hooked after that!!! My kids all 3 loved them and my youngest is 21 and her favorite move is still the original Chucky movie. I can't remember what it's called. Lol

I was literally having a conversation with my mom ablit this topic within the last week. Horror movies are my guilty pleasure and i cant wait to introduce my 10year old to some of my favorites. Hes a bit hesitant tho. But he LOVES the classic characters like pennywise and Michael myers. He thinks they look very cool!

one of my absolute fondest memories with my grandmother is watching the horror movies she watched in her youth, together. i was maybe 10 or 11 at the time and i fully credit her for my love of horror 16 years later.

I had a very weird relationship with horror growing up. As a very small child I grew up watching Men In Black and Independence Day, but besides that I was painfully sheltered, so in middle school even RL Stein books messed me up. I didn't watch my first true horror movie until I was 15/16, and it was The Ring. To this day, I think it was a good first horror movie because I was so invested in the story of it and the spirit was such a sympathetic character that I felt bad for her more than I was afraid of her. Since then I've gotten way more into horror and I love it now, but I still shy away from the very gory/gross, and The Grudge - that one movie franchise specifically I'm just not here for 😂

I worked at a blockbuster for years. When I started there my kids were about 10 & 7. I'm a huge horror movie fan & I always let my kids watch anything I watched. They could cover their eyes if they wanted, but if they chose to watch horror, they were not allowed to sleep with me. They were told early on that it was just pretend. I even had a Chucky doll & they were not the least bit scared of it.

My first horror movie was at 4 years I saw Evil Dead. Nightmares for days about her eyes coming up from the locked cellar.

The Exorcist was my first horror movie. I yawned and asked when it was supposed to get scary.

My first horror movie was Halloween and I watched it when I was three. I was supposed to be taking a nap on the couch with the lamp on and blue's clues was playing and my mom was in the other room on the computer doing something. She eventually came out to grab something and on the way back she had to do a double take and stopped at the living room. The lamp was off, Halloween was on the TV, and I was sitting in front of the TV criss cross applesauce. I turned to my mom and said "don't worry Mommy. I'm not scared." Scared the hell out of her 😂😅 So it wasn't intentional on my mom's end. She couldn't keep me away from horror movies ever since although she's tried her hardest especially with ones like Chucky. Michael Myers will always be my favorite slasher XD

I was 8 when I was told I could watch TV in my (at the time foster, the next year adoptive) parents room. The lights were off, it was like 6pm in the winter so dark out and the remote fell...I was too scared to get it and was stuck watching the 1988 movie "bad dreams" for like 45 minutes before my older sister came in and saved me by opening the door and saying 'oooooooo im telling on you, your watching a BAD movie.' I had BAD nightmares for years and I was so traumatized by the vent scene that I still freak out walking under them and I will not sleep under them. I swear, I hear 'Cynthia' to this day in my dreams when my anxiety starts to flare. Pt2 My parents took my sister's and I to see "What Lies Beneath" when I was 9. If you've ever seen it...just know for a solid half year I would not go into a bathroom alone. I refused to bathe unless someone was sitting in the toilet and the door was wide open.

I think it depends on the kid and depends on the movie experience. I was about 6 when I watched my first horror movie. Childs play, with my uncle. I stuck out of bed to watch it, thinking I was being sneaky anyway, but he knew I was there and kinda coached me through the scary parts. "Keeps watching, to see how they get out of this bad part" So I've been watching horror ever since, and my kids were 12 and 8 when they each started watching horrors.

My baby sister, I have 9 sisters from my dad. The youngest one would not go to bed without watching scary movies on her TV.. Basically she would choose between chucky and halloween every single night.. She was too when she started this.. She is now 19 and she still goes to bed with scary movies on her TV. Every night her girlfriend hates it.

My parents MADE me watch Dawn of the Dead when i was six and I had nightmares for months. My mom explained the whole “it’s not real, they’re actors having fun, etc” but then she was like “see, now mommy’s a zombie!” and started tickling me and being silly… which worked for about two seconds until I remembered the pregnant woman who got bit and that whole scenario and started developing a fear of my mom as a zombie 🤦🏻‍♀️ she left before i realized and i remember just laying in bed terrified she’d come back in the room as a zombie and eat me 😂😂 it thankfully didn’t affect me during the day when i knew she was normal but i got terrified that she’d change at night. My brain has been punking me from EARLY early childhood 😅

My ex-husband allowed our 9 yo daughter to watch Freddy vs Jason. I have had to purchase every monster horror movie since. She even took stage makeup classes in college to learn horror wounds. Interesting that she refuses 15 years later to watch anything that resembles a situation that might happen in every day life.

I firmly believe it depends on the kid. My 7 year old is terrified of most things, even "kid horror". My 5 year old has a huge obsession with Pennywise. She has a Pennywise doll, watched IT, and tried to steal my Pennywise shirt while I was hearing it. She is begging me to take her to meet "her Pennywise."

I don't remember my first horror movie. Mom didn't care, watched whatever was on. So my introduction to horror was trial by fire. By the time I entered kindergarten I was already watching Dead Alive. My favorite from when I was preschool age was Nightmare On Elm Street. I didn't like Chucky until I was older. But what freaked me out as a kid wasn't a horror movie. It was that damn E.T. puppet.

I have a 16 year old guy who grew up watching tbe campy 1950s B horror movies and then graduated to the psychological thrillers like Saw but it was a long road of explaing that the actors really don't die or really get hurt so what we did was let him watch the behind tbe sense especially of rhe monsters. just so he knew going into the movie that ut us totally not real.

I was literally raised on horror movies. According to my dad, my first horror movies was Rob Zombie’s Halloween, him and my mom took me to see it in theaters when I was 3. But like others here have said, just let your kids tell you, don’t force them into it, my mother kinda forced me into it since she didn’t give me any choice, it was always at least one horror movie a night no matter what, no other genres, ever. If it hadn’t been for my grandma I wouldn’t even have seen any Disney movies. And while I do like horror, I prefer fantasy and comedy.

My mom was watching horror movies at five, I watched my first horror movie at 11 if you just tell them how illogical it is then they should understand it's not real nor scary, just don't let them watch paranormal activity that one I heard is terrifying

I loved horror films as a kid. Anything spooky, creepy, paranormal. I think it stemmed from my early exposure and love of shows like Unsolved Mysteries, disneys So Weird (the first 2 seasons, hated after they replace Fiona), goosebumps, all of the great Halloween DCOM’s. I was also allowed to watch horror films like Halloween, nightmare on elm street, IT, The Ring, etc. my parents didn’t restrict me from watching what I felt comfortable with. Maybe because I was the youngest of 3 girls and they were too tired to care. But once they realized scary movies didn’t give me nightmares they really had no issue.

I watched dolls as a child and from that moment on have said dolls are REAL be nice to them I'm now 43 and feel the same way. My sons favorite movie when he was 3 was Halloween h2o. He always wanted to watch the ugly guy in the mask. No harm done

I THINK my 1st exposure to horror ( outside of reading Stephen King in 1st grade behind my Mom's back!), was sneaking to watch "Creature Feature" on late night TV. Anyone old enough to even REMEMBER that show? LOL!! The opening credits were this 6 fingered hand breaking up through the dry dusty (grave yard?) dirt- my 5yr old self was SCARED into place watching thru the crack between the door & hinges!! LMAO!! From there I was hooked on horror!! Funny, can't remember the main movie that night, but I sure remember that intro!!

I used to live in Oklahoma. My parents never would have taken me here, but I'd love to go now!

To be fair, growing up, I could watch anything I was interested in (eyes got cover if the parents where unsure about the scene). I was told at a young age that the people on the screen were just acting out a story.

So the fact he says Halloween 3 is a horror movie 🤣🤣 most people exclude that from the Halloween franchise including the AMC, SY-FY, FX channels who typically show scary movies through October. Even the old effects and acting doesn’t fail to scare. It’s the anticipation and music more than the bloody scenes that make ya jump.

I always had a mixed reaction to kids horror because I have a naturally over active imagination. I literally had nightmares for a week after watching frickin' Space Quest and the cannibal aliens, waking up in the night terrified that I thought I saw one of them in my doorway. Also the dumbwaiter episode from Are You Afraid of the Dark and the 'strawberry syrup' that was the blood of a kid that got stuck in the dumbwaiter and was decapitated (or something, it's been a while) and the dummy from goosebumps still creeps me out, it's so NOPE. But I still enjoyed them, I used to record the AYAOTD from Nick at Night so I could watch them the next day and even now I will occasionally have a few day binge where I will just be in the mood and watch nothing but horror. To be clear, adult horror like IT (the recent ones to be clear), Final Destinations, the Others, the Orphan etc. I prefer my horror less slasher gore, more psychological. I think starting with 'horror' that is specifically designed for kids is a good way to gauge what they can and can't handle and to also help pin point anything they find triggering or particularly scary to *them* (clowns, zombies, blood and gore, dummy's etc) so you can tweak what they can watch accordingly. My parents were very liberal with the M15+ rating for movies for me and my brother (we're from Australia) because they trusted us to nope out of the movie or show if it felt too much for us at that time. Horror is a good way for kids to identify their boundaries and back away until a later date when they're ready for it.

I think it definitely depends on the kid. I myself have been watching horror and scary movies since a very young age and they never effected me. One of my favorite movies when I was younger was Poltergeist. Which admittedly is tamer in regards to scary movies, but I also watched things like Child's Play and Nightmare on Elm Street. If a child is able to recognize and understand that what they're seeing isn't real, then I see no problem with them watching scary/horror movies.

THIS ice cream shop is literally my favorite thing to ever happen in Norman. Yummy and fun? 100/10

As a set of spooky gothic parents who run a costumers guild we have been working hard to introduce our 3.5yr old son to spooky things its hard. I find showing behind the scence video help along with making our own versions with our kiddo. We have made puppets after watching Labyrinth. I am proud to say he will sing along with rhe dance magic dance. Also having friends show up in plain close and get turned into their costumes help a lot too or in some cases just removing their heads once in costume helps. I look forward to having our special effects makeup friends making our kid up. Our son also is expoded to actual skeltonal remains and man made ones. He and his bf used some fake human arm bones to be their fishing poles in a game of fishing over the couch back. He also says hello to Pestie our heavly modified skelton horse from home depot (he is now a desiccant horse corpse) on the regular. He too big to fit in our attic so Pestie gets weathered outside through the year behind our workshop near his playhouse.

I was 4 when I accidentally walked in on my sisters and their friends watching Scream. I was scarred and am still afraid of the dark....😅

I've always loved spooky scary things since I was a child. However I won't subject my godchild to anything scary if that's not her jam but if she does like spooky scary things then I will ask her parents FIRST before I allow her to watch anything spooky.

My 9 year old loves horror movies and we actually started with killer klowns, gremlins, leprechaun,. Predator he is obsessed with, and now he's a full fledged horror fan. But overly, to the point when angry he says things that he shouldn't. My husband kinda let him start watching movies we love, at too young of an age. He's seen all the Halloweens, Nightmare on Elm streets, Jason's, Child's play, Puppet Masters, Evil Deads, and countless others and loves them all. Which I absolutely love, as long as it's not riddled with nudity or I think will actually give him nightmares etc. We limited the games though. Dead by Daylight and Evil Dead, I can't remember the name of the game unless it's just Evil Dead. He has become more violent in terms of his verbiage and that's what bothers me. Physically he wants to wrestle and be a boy but has no sibling at home to do that with. He contains it well enough to where he doesn't get in any trouble at school etc; I want to get him into Muy Thai or some type of karate to channel that energy and aggression and also make it more disciplined.

Hostle oh god that is one of the most sick and twisted horror movie franchise I’ve ever seen.

I watched the 1980 film 'The Changeling' with my Grandmother when I was 8-9 years old. I still find it difficult to watch suspenseful movies to this day. When I watched 'Aliens' for the first time with my family I was 11-12 years old. I can still remember the scene where an alien sneaks up on Farrow and kills her while she was flying to rescue the team. The close up of the alien scared me so much that I looked at my Dad, who just gave me a knowing glance and continued to watch the film. For some reason I thought that Spunkmeyer must have turned into an alien after touching the goo as he was entering the ship. I reckon that the ages of 9 -13 are the best time to view horror movies. At that age kids usually understand the concept of death & they still possess the heightened fear of monsters that is common during childhood.

" is there any horror movie you wont bless your child with?" "Hostel" When I tell you the flashbacks of seeing that at 1 AM alone on the family TV when i was around 12 came back so hard I think I got whiplash.....

My daughter who is now 29, but when she was 4 she watched Children of the corn. The kid was addicted to horror movies and still is today. She didn’t like IT the clown though lol

My first horror movie was IT. I was 6. I thought it was great, but my brother (who was 4) has never quite recovered.

My mum always reminded me that the cameraman is always there too and clearly still alive so it’s definitely not real. That helped a lot. 😅 Edit: not that she made me watch horror movies! It was Flipper! 😂 The 1964 one and it’s an excellent film.

Hey, I've been to Norman! I friend of mine used to live there and I used to visit from like 04 to 06...Dang, I feel old now!

Halloween movies were the 1 movie that stayed relatively the same throughout not all commercialized and over the top

My parents loved horror movies, and they let me watch scary horror too....i watched things like: The Exorcist, The Shinning, Friday the 13th, The Gremlins, Pet Cemetary, Halloween.....i watched things that were probably way inappropriate for a 8-10yr old, but i loved them and it didnt scare me or give me 1 single nightmare....i was also very mature for my age, at least thats what people always told my parents and i......i knew these movies were pretend, not real life. I still love horror movies to this day!! ❤❤ I do agree that not all children should watch horror movies or can handle them

My first horror movie was Childs Play. I think I was around 5 or 6 years old. Luckily I was never scared. My parents were watching it one evening and i was in my room playing, i went to go get something to snack on, seen the movie on tv, sat down snd started watching it. My parents warned me it was a scary movie, but didnt change it. Only tears of "distress" i cried related to that movie was that no stores nearby had a chucky doll 😂 After that when Child's Play would come on tv again my parents would let me know so i could see it from the beginning, and when the sequels were on they'd tell me so we could watch those as well. You know what did scare me as a kid? The Muppets. 😅 their creepy mouths scared me.

My 12 year old hates anything scary, so he doesn't watch them. My 11 year old has been interested in anything scary since he was four. It has been a process finding scary movies that are appropriate. We always watch them together and he loves it. His favorite is "It". He loves it and isn't scared of them. Our four year old was watching movies with us until we watched the short "the hug" when he was two. Since then he is out of the room. So.. It depends on the kid and the age. Recommendations for appropriate movies please!

I honestly can't recall a time I didn't watch horror. I remember sitting in the theater younger than 8. Probably closer to 5? Laughing uproariously at Freddy Kruger. My mom and I watched all the slashers and all the things. Particularly Stephen King.

I have adhd and autism..my step daughter i raise has adhd..she adores scary movies..i like them but my brain doesnt allow me separating emotions connected to fake blood and the music in the background..its amazing the way all our brains work so differently

My kids would keep asking to watch Nightmare on elm Street (the original) , so I said no that it was way too scary for them. They kept on and on, so said ok youse want to watch it. They didn't make it past " 1,2, he's after you, 3,4, he's at your door" they jumped up and said " nope , nope" so back in the CD case it went.😂 I was the kind of mother that would say No but if they thought they knew better, then I would say , OK youse know better then on you go. They would quickly come too there realisation it's not a good idea. They both survived one is 30 and the other is 27.😂

I saw the behind the scenes interview with the main character of the first hostel he said he had nightmares after making it.
