I've seen playoff games, even finals games, lost when teams didn't foul in that situation. 2008 title game, Memphis' players were told to foul up 3 before KU passed halfcourt. They didn't get a foul on the ballhandler so Rose and the team fell back into regular defense and Chalmers hit the 3 to go to OT and win.

The next thing to muck this up should be every body practicing bouncing their second free throw off the rim. It's not easy, but is it harder than hitting contested three off the dribble? Not if they work as much on it, knowing the other team may foul up three.

@SweetZombiJesus
@SweetZombiJesus 2 дня назад
Remembering specific instances introduces bias as we recall shots that were made more than shots that were missed. If you foul a 90% FT shooter, they have an 81% to hit both shots. You can let a 40% 3pt shooter take a shot, but if its contested it should be less than 40%. If you're down three, foul them. If you're down two, you are giving them an 81% chance to tie it vs a 40% chance (or less) to win it. Its a tough call.

To me, this all depends on how much time is left. Let’s say you’re up 3 with 20 seconds left and you start the foul game..there’s just too many opportunities for you to eventually miss a ft or two. I’m not big on giving away free points. In this situation you may end up fouling/being fouled 5 times before the game is over.

The blackjack analogy by LeBron James was terrible. A skilled blackjack player will hit or not hit with a 12 against a dealer’s 2 based on the running count and sometimes one may hit and other times may not hit. That player probably wouldn’t want you at the table instead.
@GoldenayeN64
@GoldenayeN64 11 дней назад
The worst case scenario is a tie if you allow a 3-pt attempt down 3 and avoid fouling. If you foul intentionally with more than like 5 seconds left, you better have players who can make the FTs when fouled back. If they make 2, and you miss 1 or both, then you can lose on a 3 or even 2. That's happened plenty of times too.

This is one of the topics that I think highlights the skill difference in players today vs back in the day and why even the best coaches lose touch with some of the finer points of the game as they age and the game evolves. You didnt have 6'3 guys that scared you from 37 feet out in crunch time, let alone a 6'8 forward thats not even considered an elite player. Guys today, particularly the b and c tier players are just so far beyond the skill of the b/c tier players 20-40 years ago. Of course most older guys will never acknowledge that and will claim they could have done it even though they never practiced it like these guys have (guys like Larry Bird are honest though and tell you the average player is more skilled today.) Carlisle was an elite coach at one time and hes still a great coach, but hes just not as good as he once was because he hasnt fully adapted to the times. Thats why him and Luka butted heads and he got fired from Dallas. Its why Kerr took Golden State where Mark Jackson couldn't and so on and so forth

Should foul is a little different than did foul with refs putting away their whistles, or the other team moving the ball faster than you can get to them. That Houston-Dallas ending near the end of the regular season was a perfect example. The Rockets obviously wanted to foul but first the refs wouldn’t call one in the backcourt, then the Mavs were fast enough with the ball that they got Dante Exum an open 3 before anyone could bear hug somebody. Swish, overtime.

It seems like overall teams aren't using as much strategy throughout games, just relying on 'balling-out', abandoning matchups strategy, pace, switching, defending by zone with spy on ball ideas. If you play pick-up basketball 'styles', you get same results, but even pick-up game basketball will at times have guys plan a strategy to hold court. Clippers for example had a lot of young players who should already know what strategies are to fill minutes of injured and exhausted players. Not sure if Harden can fit unless he's in a structured team that he understands his role, but he needs the ball to be dangerous. He's a #6 therefore, but he may lose his desire accepting that. Westbrook sacrificed and the Clippers were worse when Westbrook was told to be #6. On some teams he should have been #6, but not on Clippers. So Westbrook should look to a trade with more honest coaching. I like Coach Lue, very much. But Harden would be more effective running a second unit in a team with young long guys with a starting unit that runs the break, then his comes in an does halfcourt razzle dazzle. Bron, Westbrook and PG of KD should come to San Antonio. Do you know how great the food is in San Antonio? Ask Barkley. He says you measure the average lady hiny to know where the best food is!! Bring your yardstick!

Y'all saying two shots and ball back are crazy/delusional. It doesn't take away from the game yall just aren't basketball literate enough to enjoy the nuances like these sorts of strategic plays. Now, those abusive foul shots players like harden abused so much that the league nerfed them, those were unhealthy for the game. Y'all are sitting here saying you want the other team to get a free momentum swing and lead because of a foul in the last moments of the 4th? So basically they auto lose. Stop it. They literally show how detrimental it is to allow great shooters open shots, you need to do something to stop it. Hell, shooters are hitting contested shots regularly so in the closing moments of a gsme a foul really could be the best option. As they explained as well, it's somewhat of a gamble. redick literally says they tried that on bron but he read the foul play. It's not some guaranteed bs like a foul shot before the nerf. You're taking a gamble that could pay off or not.

In Europe most of the time this is not even a coaches decision. Players foul automatically. Dont know why in US people have seen fouling like "Dirty Play" for so long. if San Antonio Spurs have fouled Chris Bosh when he got the rebound LeBron might have one ring less.

Coaching in hindsight is a lot easier than coaching in real time.

Right now I think just about anything would be a coaching upgrade
