There are socio-political issues brought up by these all female bands, though... with rape culture being one of the larger ones. In fact, that comes across as one of the main points of this video. "Feelings" are something heavily influencing the way in which these women are using specific songs to dismantle this male dominated genre. I'm not quite sure why someone would think that discussing these things and being "badass" is mutually exclusive.

This... is effin' epic. And I didn't even notice the "oversexualization" until the nipples under VAG's uniform were blurred out... And then I was all like: "Feminism? I though feminists hated being sexualized, oh wait, that's just the femiNAZIs, because the "true feminists" say it's fine to want to be a soldier, rock star, CEO, or body builder, but that it is also okay to want to be a porn star or a house wife." @GeorgiaLunch
@GeorgiaLunch 8 лет назад
I suppose part of it simply is a gimmick, but I think all-female bands in general (tribute or not) are slightly inherently political, only because of the constant judgment and labels put on women within metal over the years. When you take men out of the equation, it proves what women can do. But I think many of us just also have an inherent love of just playing to our favorite tunes we grew up with. That's how we learned to sing and play instruments. Even in my band that does original tunes, I've loved singing covers of songs done by Savatage and Mercyful Fate and Dio, among others. It's just fun. But I guess that really varies person to person.
@oheaven74
@oheaven74 8 лет назад
I guess the fact that they are usually referred to as "all female" does kinda indicate something inherently political about it, not that it's a bad thing of course.
@GeorgiaLunch
@GeorgiaLunch 8 лет назад
Yeah, I was gonna add a comment about that issue within the "female fronted" community. There's recently been discussion about why that part is specified when you have, for example, bands like Demonic Christ, Abnormality, Morgengrau and Darkened Nocturn Slaughtercult that are "female fronted", but do not have any sonic indicator that makes them different from their "male-fronted" counterparts. Or just the fact that it's pointed out at all in any band, whether it sounds like a female or not. The reality is, there's still a market, and there's still people who specifically like the sound of the frequencies often emphasized in the female singing voice against rock or metal. Clearly, we could have a huge debate on that. And neither is necessarily bad, but the fact that the gender difference is referenced may or may not create a statement in itself.
@MickeyCuervo36
@MickeyCuervo36 8 лет назад
Slow down man! I need to write some of these band names down! XD Vag Halen, AC/DShe, Iron Maidens, Lez Zepplin, Bitchfits, Judas Priestess... Wow... I'm hoping that they can start writing some fresh material, because these ladies rock HARD and need to be out there more.

Side note: I've seen Judas Priestess multiple times. Their singer, Militia, is quite amazing and has a solo career. I can speak with some authority about the Iron Maidens since I am friends with their original co-founders, Melanie Sisneros and Jenny Taylor Warren, the original Bassbitch and Bruce Chickinson, respectively, and I was also their lead road crew member for two years (2002-2003). In their case, their formation was not born out of any political leanings, but because both Jen and Mel are die-hard Iron Maiden fans. Melanie left the Maidens to briefly join Synergy a few months later and Jen left to focus on raising her sons and her education at the end of 2003.

So why are female tribute bands given the social advantages of being automatically considered some sort of sociopolitical statement when tribute bands are usually based expediency and profit? Female vocals are pretty great in general, I don't think politicising an all-female band is necessarily inherent but it could be in some instances, depends on the vibe. Kittie, Hyserica, Nervosa, Slovenian, The Heathers... A huge list is out there and most of them are pretty damn good at what they do. You want more? Here is a site dedicated to all female bands www.metaladies.com/all-female-metal-bands/

+Atasco Osage That doesn't make THIS content (the covers) political, though. I could write an entire and thoroughly well researched political essay and then sing the happy birthday to my brother, and my first wouldn't have any effect whatsoever in the second one. I know this is a gross exaggeration, but it kinda isn't.

My introduction to coverbands was The Exploding Fifis (which can do The Talking Heads better than The Talking Heads can in my humble opinion). They are cool, quirky, and generally rad as hell. As long as you can sing and play music reasonably well, get on stage and give your audience something to remember... A memorable name helps... I'm looking at you Fisted Sister.

Hey man, I don't know if you could find a translation of it or any strong source of it, but it might be interesting to do and episode on Italian mainstream rap and how politically focused it is. Most of it is about VAT tax and how the Italian church is corrupt. I dunno could be interesting!

The Iron Maidens are awesome musicians. They also have the blessing of the guys from Iron Maiden. When I saw them in San Diego, Nikko and Jannick were in the crowd. As far as female metal tribute bands, don't go making out more than what it is. No one makes a big deal out of the slew of male tribute bands (and there are tons). By the way, you missed Whole Lotta Rosie - another AC/DC tribute band. Hey, but thanks for including Judas Priestess too! Militia Vox is amazing.

You should do an episode on Doujin music. It's basically original music of any genre sold at specific conventions in Japan. It leads to some music that's really unique. Also, there is waaaay too much Touhou Doujin music, and some of it is waaay too good.

What about all female metal bands who write their own music instead of riding on the backs of all male bands?

As the child of a metal head, I'm very happy to see that this is a thing that exists. I've always loved Metallica, Iron Maiden, and megadeth but never felt it was super dude-ish, however, I have always been asked 3-4 times if I really like power metal and quizzed on albums and band history, other than that being at home and listening to it wasn't an issue. That is most likely from being raised in a household where every car trip consisted of back to back Metallica and Megadeth. I can see the political side of wanting to emulate something held out of grasp because some people assume vaginas can't be brutal. As an owner of a vagina- they can be very brutal.

In this discussion of female fronted metal bands, no one has mentioned Sister Sin, Warlock, or Doro. For shame. Sigh also has a female vocalist who plays the saxophone. She's not the lead vocalist, but she has more powerful growls than the lead does.

I just found an artist on RU-vid named Hentai Dude, and a whole niche of anime inspired rap. it's pretty funny, and begs the question: does it make a difference if a rap artist is rapping about getting babes and they're outright fictional characters?

Maybe I just listen to a disproportionate amount of female led rock bands but I had no idea that women weren't allowed in the music industry.

In this moment and kittie are in my top 10, generally women choose not to make more metal music which I have no issue with.

hiurro Um... the guy's right. It's not that women are not allowed in music industry, they're rather objectified and denied into power positions.

I can't tell if attractive women absolutely nailing classic metal songs while mostly naked is something that would offend or attract your stereotypical metalhead. There's a bit of a hypocritical nature to straight, masculinity-obsessed misogynists. I'm sure they'll find something to complain about.

Could you do an episode on very short songs. Napalm Death hold the record with You Suffer being 1.3 secs long. Butthole Surfers song Mega Armageddon Death lasting 1.5 secs long are just 2examples.

It's weird seeing some of those women dressed in a similar way that the original bands did. Now I get why the classic rockstars have the reputation that they have _if you know what I mean_.
