On 6th April I was visiting a friend in Shrewsbury so decided to spend an hour or two at the wonderful Tudor style station of Shrewsbury. Originally built in 1848 and becoming a listed grade 2 building in 1969 along with the largest surviving mechanical signal box in the world, built by the LNWR, accomodating 180 levers at Severn Bridge Junction to the south of the station. Platforms are extended over the River Severn which flows around and through the city. The city itself is full of Tudor period buildings again mostly listed and is a must for any visitor to Shropshire and the nearby area.
The main company that operates through Shrewsbury station is Arriva Trains (Wales) and is a central hub for traffic between the Midlands and Wales (North and South). It is also the start or end (Depending on direction of travel) of a journey along "The Heart of Wales Line" via Llandridnod Wells and Swansea, an absolute gem of a line, but trains are a little in frequent. The Holyhead to Cardiff trains still see Diesel Locomotive haulage, one in the morning and returning back to Holyhead in the evening. Several freight trains are scheduled through the station during the day so the place offers an interesting experience for the railway enthusiast and of course is signalled mechanically still (For Now). Get to see the location before it succumbs to modernisation, at least being listed the buildings should survive. Many thanks to the welcoming staff at Shrewsbury station on the day.
