Thank you for your videos. I have been singing classical for years. My teacher 30 years ago taught me to sing effortlessly and I was able to sing for hours and hours every day and never had a problem, but I must admit that I never really new what was going on in my throat. I just remember that I had to unlearn the idea of using my body to push up and support the notes as I go up and up. This at first doesn't feel right, but when you practice with this in mind it becomes normal and produces better sound. I have used the phrase when helping people " the body doesn't care". Let the body go, sing from the eyes up. Singing is 90% imagination and 10% physical effort. Of course the more fit you are the easier it will be and the better you will sound. I suppose you could say that until seeing your videos, I have been singing blind. But now I see! Thank you so much.

Thank you for these exercises. I got sick ten years ago and what I thought would be temporary laryngitis persisted and I lost my fifth and sixth octave. Due to this is started singing around whatever it was and trying to hit high notes I used to be able to hit so easily. To do this I had to raise my larynx. It’s been ten years and I still haven’t fully recovered my sixth octave. I’m starting to realize that I took on some really bad habits maneuvering around my issues, that includes a raised larynx. Finding your videos is helping me stabilize my larynx. It’s really hard once I start getting to my high C’s, but it’s starting to come along. I’m just so very grateful for your videos. Much love to you for caring about others and their voices ♥️

Hi Chuck, thanks for sharing such great content. Your exercises have helped me to better understand what it feels like to sing higher notes freely without pulling chest. But how do I go from singing perfect "goos" to other vowels and ultimately words in a song? It seems to be quite a big jump! Keep up the good work! George
@PowerToSing
@PowerToSing 3 года назад
The short answer is instead of singing the words, use the exercise words. An example would be to substitute the words with goo...taking care to maintain the same feeling as you felt doing the exercise. Do that several times until you can sing the phrase easily with goo. Then sing the words, striving to duplicated the same feeling...only with words this time.

I've realized I'd been closing the air passage in my throat up to the back of my tongue. When I realized how to keep the larynx off, I felt that the passage opened up way way down further, like almost down to my chest. I had been having problems with my ears and nose, hearing those cracky plastic sounds in my ears. When this passage was opened, I could also feel my ears opened (like winds literally puffed out), it was amazing. So many things I've been doing wrong! It makes my throat more relieved and my larynx doesn't go up. It's so much more relaxed and effective to sing that way and it improves my posture and mental health, too.

I’ve never seen someone share about the same problem I have, since I haven’t either. When my nose and ear are open, my thoughts have far more clarity and I become better at basically everything physically. When they aren’t, it’s misery. The difference between us though is that when my ears are open, I hear those ‘creaky plastic sounds’. But when they’re not, I don’t. Wonder what’s up with that.

Hello, I'm Philipp from Germany. Im currently 17 years old and I'm taking singing lessons for half a year. I watched A LOT of your videos. I got a problem: Everytime I do some of the gee or goo exercises trying to keep my larynx down, I always get exhausted immediately, and I sometimes just can't relax the vocal chords above the f above middle c. This makes it really hard to practise these. I feel like I can't get any forward. My larynx keeps coming up trying to sing higher notes. :/ Any advice? P.S. I love your videos more than anything! You are a huge help for a lot of young singers, thank you very much for that! You are the best of RU-vid! Keep going! ♥️
@PowerToSing
@PowerToSing 5 лет назад
Hi Toda: one thing that you must remember is 17 is a difficult time for us guys. You voice is just about through going through the vocal change. Until then...everything is a little harder. Meanwhile...let's say you do the exercise at an 8 out of 10 in loudness. Do the exercises at a 3 or 4. Softly. Second, as you so it softer, make sure the vowel doesn't change...be very strict about keeping the vowel sounding the same. Third, allow the sound to go very light and hooty. If you softly do a hi "hoot" like an owl, that's what it feels like if you allow the sound to go hooty or hollow sounding. Try these and see what happens. Good luck.

Thanks Chuck, but I have one question. How am I supposed to release tension on "e"? I know it has to do with tongue, but it is simply hard for me to keep my mouth wide.
@PowerToSing
@PowerToSing 8 лет назад
+Gb Republic Hi Gb Republic! There's good tension or friendly tension and bad tension. The friendly tension is within the vocal cords themselves and helps us sing the vowels like "e" . But this tension can become "unfriendly" by singing too loud or pressing the cords together too tight. Try doing it softer or less loud. Try relaxing the vocal cords somewhat without becoming too breathy. Also try doing the "e" exercise with "oo" lips. That is "oo" as in "too". See if this helps a little. There is no need keeping your mouth open wide. Just relax and let your jaw drop a little as you sing higher. Good luck.

There will be a little bit of rising, that's ok. If it's excessive, then see if you can add some of the dopy sound along with the bubbles and lip trill. As you go higher it should get hootier not pinched and no cracking.

They seem to get your voice to be better. But a question, Will they help in every language? Like, you know the famous Rabindra Tagore and his famous bengali songs. Is the way of english songs different from other songs(bengali, hindi, arabic, etc) and will these exercises work for all type of singing? The Rabindra Sangeets (songs) are quite different and I panic that they won't work for these R.S. Lata Mangeshkar (respected singer of India) and Celine Dion are not at all same but you know, I want to reach the top of both english and bengali songs, even other and that's a pretty difficult task. So please, help me out!

+Aryana Sreshtha Reede Hi A.S.R.! Great question. What these exercises tend to do is help get your voice where it should be. If it should be in Chest voice, they help do that. If your voice should be in Head Voice, they will help do that. If it should be in a Mix of Chest and Head Voice, they will help do that. It doesn't matter what language or genre of music you sing. And they will help you have a healthy voice so you can sing for years. My opinion is these things will help you sing anything you want.

Really like the exercises, but the larynx SHOULD rise and lower in singing despite what a lot of people think. What was demonstrated when going up in a "thick-fold" sound here was constriction of the "false folds" and not sure to a risen larynx. Whilst I do agree - rising a larynx too high can become problematic, but a risen larynx for higher singing is an acoustic changer and allows for a more resonate sound in the pharynx. Nice trills! :) If you'd like to discuss this further I'd love to share views! :)

@PowerToSing
@PowerToSing 7 лет назад
Your larynx will move slightly like a buoy in gentle waters. With time and correct practice the larynx will stay at the level where you speak no matter whether you sing chest, middle or head voice. Our habits are part of the problem. The other part is not knowing how to do it in the first place. Reduce the volume when you do the exercises. Experiment by doing them very soft and easy. See what happens.

+MCA Arts Hi! Here's a good exercise to keep the external muscles from pulling up the Larynx. Try doing the same scales as shown here, but use the word "goo". As the pitch goes higher, make sure the word remains "goo" and doesn't become "guh" or "ga" or some other sound. Make your lips keep a narrow "oo" formation. Don't let them open to "Oh". You may want to watch Episode #26. I demonstrate using the "goo" exercise. This will help you.

What is the meaning of resonance?
@PowerToSing
@PowerToSing 7 лет назад
Vibration caused by the sound waves coming from the vocal cords. Sound waves travel through the air and cause vibrations in the tissues of the throat and head.

hello chuck! you gave 4 exercises here to lower the larynx. Can i just choose 1 exercise to sing the difficult song? or do i have to be able to do it across all 4 techniques? i can do it in the lip bubble no problem but i lose the dopey quality of the gee/ goo when the notes go higher so i was wondering if the lip bubble would be enough. Also, when doing it in the lip bubble, do i do it in the same volume as i would do the actual song (belting)? thank you. this video was exceptionally educational for me.
@PowerToSing
@PowerToSing 8 лет назад
+joyce janik Hi Joyce. The lip bubble is the easiest to use. And will help immediately. However, it is quite different from singing. The gee and goo is closer to singing because it is using actual vowels and consonants. So it will benefit you even more to eventually be able to do those while keeping the dopey quality. Doing the lip bubble will be more effective in a medium to medium-soft volume. This will help reduce overall tension around the vocal cords. The dopey sound is used as a temporary exercise until you are successful singing without tension, stress or breaks. But the bubble lips can be used in this application and as warm ups every time you sing. I'm glad you've found the video helpful. Thanks!

@@alan_cdt You are at the hardest age to sing for us guys. Be patient with yourself. Be very strict to do the exercises exactly as demonstrated. Over time you will gradually be able to learn how to do it. I promise you you can do it. But it will be several more years before your voice stops changing.

Lip Bubbles and Tongue Trills are speech therapy exercises - never meant for singing. No one should consciously try to control their larynx except in keeping it neutral through proper breath support and a "uh" larynx position. The larynx is a responsive organ, not an active one. But that laryngeal dampening should be a mental direction, not a physical direction. Your "Les Miserable" singing example shows just how weak lip bubbles train to voice to become; they simply don't compress the folds enough to create enough frequency response, resulting a weak sound lacking in a balanced tonality.

There’s no evidence that high larynx techniques are harmful or ineffective, and the high larynx coordinations you show only don’t work because they don’t go with the sound you are after. These “absolute truths” you sell are in fact highly conditional. It’s like someone saying the trombone slide should always be in the same position. Some of your “bad” examples sounded pretty good, and closer to what a lot of people are after in certain rep, and also are more sustainable because you had a higher closed quotient. I really wish we could have more reasonable discussions than this, and present a balanced view instead of forcing our own preferences on others.

I don't know everything about singing. However, I was fortunate to learn many things from awesome teachers , including how to keep the larynx down. All combined, it's been life changing for me and my family. Fortunately, I've seen the same life changing impact on my students. So, my experience is opposite from yours.
