Sometimes everywhere we turn, we receive only discouragement from those we wish would offer encouragement. They act as if they are "doing us a favor" through their criticism. We have to learn to be our own cheerleader or go down in defeat.
Singing - Should I Quit?
Should you just give up on singing?
It feels like you're just not cut out for it?
People are telling you you suck. Even your close friends and family hint or maybe boldly tell you to give it up.
I cannot tell you how many times I wanted to quit singing myself.
When I first started, I hated my tone, I had no range, I had no stamina, it just wasn't meant for me.
Sure, I could've given up.
In fact anything worth doing is very difficult. But it's those that stick to it and seek out quality information on how to get good and apply it are those that end up succeeding.
I often remind myself how many successful singing artists there are that are pretty bloody awful to be candid.
And yet they did not listen to the naysayers that told them they could not do it.
And many of them went on to be some of the most influential vocalists
in music history.
Why?
Because they had a unique story to tell and didn't let anyone stop them from telling their story.
And truth be told, the world is a better place for their influence sharing their story with us aspiring singers

Excellent words of wisdom. Bruce Springstein said he started in a club in Jersey playing for free to 5 people. A month or two later the line was out the door and down the street. He said, " You just have to keep at it and don't quit." The cream will always rise to the top IMO.

My wife passed away from cancer in 2011 I have not sang since then. I thought I was done then for some reason A situation came into my life where I met you Ken. You were gracious to give me your course for helping you out and I will forever be grateful. I had singing lessons but nothing like this course. Its the best course I have ever had the privilege to attempt. I have taken it slowly but I have built my voice back up to be able to sing songs I have not sang in yrs and some I could never sing. this course is amazing I can not say enough about it. thanks for making me realize that you should never quit something that brings you so much Joy. I'm 60 now and my one big regret in life is giving up on a career in music as a young man. I was an average guitarist who taught himself to sing. Funny thing is, I can sing much better now and with a greater range and power. Of course I can play guitar better too. Singing and playing music is more important to me than ever. Lots of people may try to discourage you. Don't ever let them if you know that's what you want to do.

You are correct. I had stopped singing for a while because of what people did to me. Now I’m at a new place in life and I said piss off on those people. I removed myself from them and got around people who appreciate what I do. So I agree DONT STOP SINGING!!!!!!!!!

What a guy! What a heart! May God bless you this day and everyday. Praying for your Daughter, you & Fam- bc I have "similar, yet different" serious health issues. Not fun. But you are SO right. Gotta push thru, even when dealing with Chronic Pain- Talk about difficult?! If I don't get up EVERY SINGLE DAY no matter how I feel, the illnesses WILL take over.. I don't want to lose my independency, nor my use of legs, arms etc., and so I WILL fight as long as I can and it honestly is a VERY miserable experience but I fully trust the Lord to help me and my Husband. Love what you said here. Short n sweet yet blunt and truth! God bless you and all you do, and God bless and fully heal your Daughter as He is the Almighty Physician! In Christ, ~Shay

Just what I needed to hear. People have told me that I've sucked and I cant sing all the time. Just recently on Tik Tok. To be fair. I haven't practiced so much, just read bout vocal technique and tried some excersies. But now, when I'm really starting to practice, I feel and hear a difference. I can match pitch better. People hear a difference. I've been so angry for not being able to sing, but you know what? Use that anger to reach those higher note. "Cry" it out and it feels so much better, I promise. Now, people say that Im getting better and better. I haven't performed infront of other for a while now, but I love to prove people wrong. I'm biding my time:) I will try your course sometime, but I like to try different methods as well. Don't give up guys!

Quit??? Never Ken! These days I don't know the meaning of it. I hate my voice at times but there's times I surprise myself too. Especially since I've started and I'm still in the beginning but repetition. Keep at it!!! 🤘

Great advice Ken, thank you so much for the encouraging words. I'm 40 and I've been dreaming about being a singer on and off since 20s. Somehow 20 years slipped through my hands, worrying about work, money, life, and postponing my dream. I'm a musician, guitarist, but never put real constant energy into singing. I'm at the point of my life where I realise if I don't give it my best shot I will regret it in the last moments of my life. I don't care about the results now, I care about giving my best to what I believe, and beyond "success", becoming the person I want to become. Thank you for the support and being there, your voice and story is an inspiration

Reminds me of the time when I first plucked up the courage to sing in front of other people . Started at 16 and still going strong at 39. A personal thank you from myself to you Ken Tamplin. Your videos have opened up so many avenues for exploring and developing the voice. When I first cottoned on to the idea of 'it feels like holding your breath when singing', the possibilities seemed endless with access to the higher register. One woman told me over twenty years ago that I do not have any singing voice. I was singing 'I am sailing'. It was true then. But when you practise the voice gets better. I think I am quite satisfied with my voice today and perhaps that woman might be surprised. The bad thing is I wasted a lot of time due to lack of proper coaching. However, Ken's course gives me what I was missing.

And too maybe now - you have given yourself what you needed to make that happen. You out the time in; and you are Like a superhero - you have the shield to reflect or deflect negativity from others - everyone is a critic - very few know what they are actually talking about... keep your self defenses high- listen to criticism - fix the issue - even if it’s not paying any attention to the negative Nancy or nasty Norbert. Just focus on u- developing your craft.

No, don't quit, sign up to the course, and within a few weeks, you will realise you made the right choice not to quite. Joint it 2 months ago, and so glad I did and already seeing large improvements. I'm 52 for reference, and I've been watching loads of different youtube video's from loads of channels for months, and I've progressed more in a few weeks than all of them combined. I've had a couple of real light bulb moments in the last few weeks. Onwards for me, and know I'm in it for the long run now, just wish I had started it 18 months ago. Lockdown got me into wanting to sing better and correctly.

I've had a few naysayers, too. They were college voice instructors (Don't quit your day job, don't change your major, don't, don't, don't...). All I learned from them was that they didn't know how to teach a challenging student. I struggled for years until I found a teacher who believed in me. It was like a shot of hope and adrenaline combined, and I began to flourish! All anyone needs is good instruction and some encouragement. Kudos to Ken for being that kind of teacher.

I enjoy listening to your videos where you analyze isolated vocals of singers of past bands. I grew up with these singers who had such unique and cool voices. But it also makes me sad to know that these singers who had such unique and cool voices can no longer sing like that. I wish they would have met you a long time ago to teach them how to sing properly so that they could maintain their voices even into old age. Hopefully today's singers will pay attention to you. No Ken...do not quit. You provide a wonderful service to so many people. And help bring more wonderful music into this world. Which is something this world needs more of.

Singing rock music has always been my dream since I was a kid, regardless of other people's "opinions". I don't have any hopes of becoming a "rock star", though I couldn't care less about that. Some people do it becuase they have very high professional aspirations. To me being able to sing well and effectively is the end in itself. That's the best reward, that's my driving motivation.

Hi Ken Do you know what I admire the most about you? You always encourage us to be a "story teller" about ourselves. This is powerful... Thanks, Ken. I've been gigging for 35 years and have quit consciously twice, but am always back because I've felt there was so much more to add to my life's tapestry, and have always feared those Aristotle words! So, when family and folks tell me why I never pursued higher education sooner (I did much later), I remind them that I never would have had the chance open for some very cool names (Flock of Seagulls, Men Without Hats, Los Lobos) or meet and sing to songwriter Norman Gimbel (Killing me Softly), or Mayor Willie Brown, or work with the Santanas (Jorge and Carlos), or sing 'I left my heart in San Francisco' on the same stage Tony Bennett debuted the song (Venetian Room at the Fairmont Hotel), or get to do the National Anthem at a sold-out Raiders-cowboys football game at Oakland Stadium - standing at the same green turf where I'd seen my idol, David Bowie, some 25 years earlier. That's what I remind my detractors with. My experiences tell my story.

The band Boston had a quit story. Some of the original members tried to market their music, I think before they were even called Boston, and no record labels were interested. Supposedly several years went by, and the story goes that one of the members was doing some straightening up around the house and opened a drawer and saw their demo tape. He decided to give it a another try and a see if anyone was interested in it.... and the rest is history. That was in the 1970s, and you can still buy their music today.

You can’t quit. You’re too deep in the game ;) I was never really a ‘singer’ but I’ve taken some required vocal courses along with the piano courses, etc…more of a home alone and shower type of singer lol. Whenever I hear people like you (you’re always an inspiration and thank you!), King diamond, dio, or michael sweet singing…I rock out my best falsetto possible. I absolutely sound ridiculous but it just feels so good!

Yeah, I quit once. Then found i was miserable and couldn't stay away. So now i won't quit till my voice goes. Even if there is not any chance of doing something great or making$$ with music & singing. I will still be singing just for me, no it dosen't really matter. And at least there is RU-vid where you can share your karaoke/cover songs for free! :)

thank you ken i needed to here that. i lost everything because of the covid 19 lockdowns, both my business hair salon, and personal training shop gone. i left california 6 months ago and moved to Knoxville were i rented a room. I'm 52 and starting from scratch I've wanted to buy your full course but I'm in survival mode. i watch all your videos and believe its still possible to achieve this level of skill. thanks again for your heart felt message, by the way back in the late 1980 1990 i was in a christian rock band called roxsway, we opened up for your band shout and i think holy soldier was there to. god bless lane frank

Thank you for this words of motivation. We singers have ups and downs like everybody else. We give our emotions, stories and heart to listeners. This question "should I quit" was ringing in my head many times, especially when I failed to express myself becouse of limited technique. But everytime I head this voice in my head which tells me to quit I remembered what music and other singers in their message and emotions gave me. And I want to give the same to others, to make people experience all those emotions. Maybe by music which is inside me someone will find their way? Or maybe someone will gain strenght to overcome their difficulties? You will never know if you just quit...thanks Ken for this reminder once again ✌️

When I try to sing at a very young age maybe fourteen that's when I wanted to start singing I was told that I would never make it that I sucked this was a 1980 or 1981 I'll be 54 in a few days I've never even been in a band but I can play guitar and I can sing now I think because of that one time I don't sing in front of a lot of people at all I don't get very much encouragement even though I'm a really good songwriter you've given me a lot of confidence with the things that you've just said to no matter what I've done in my life whether it was three trade schools to become a great welder or even being in the army or being a single parent to two children from diapers to adults cuz I was widowed Young I have never believed in myself no matter what I have accomplished I really really needed to hear this I would love to sit down and just sing with you one time bro anyway thank you very very very much I really needed to hear this I've written so many songs over the years that I know would be number one but I'm afraid to play them in front of people I really needed to hear this

I used to be a soprano and I gave up when I auditioned for a stupid tv singing competition. First phase was supposed to be the easiest part, but the dude who was there told me I was good but not god enough. That brought me down, broke my confidence and I quit singing. After almost 10 years without signing any note, I'm starting to train my voice again (even though music is not my priority anymore) it helps me with my anxiety and other stuff. I'm also learning to play the piano.... We are the ones who can decide whether we let others put limitations in our lives or not.

I sang and sang a lot but my voice was not any good. My Dad and my chorus teacher however helped my voice improve, but later my chorus teacher retired and my Dad was losing his singing voice. I was alone but I did it with God by always praying and practicing with God. I'm in a little room and I can feel the presence. But my brothers were always making fun of me outside my door of how bad I sang and that a singer can't make it in this world or how I ruined many songs for them with my horrible voice. Months later, I have a voice like Bono and hitting more higher notes week by week. Trust God and keep going. Nobody ever succeeded by playing it safe. And thank you Ken Tamplin for the wonderful lessons.

I’ll tell you what I’m not into singing at all but I enjoy your channel and I want to tell you that quitting is for cc’s, I agree with you my friend give it all you Gotta give it hell and the hell with everybody if they don’t like it enjoy yourself , enjoy what you’re doing and grow from there,👌✌️✌️

Quitting is death. Non essential, breathless and masked like rabid dogs. Use music to help us find joy at times and meaning to overcome the obstacles of life, on other occasions. The sound of silence is darkness and despair. Kens online school is proof that good practice pays off.

Glad I didn't quit singing it's had ups and downs but made loads progress in 3 years since starting. Consistently looking to improve that will always be there and met new people through learning to sing so it's been positive experience!

Great advice Ken! I was in a band way back in the 80's with duel guitar players! The band always picked on Joe our rhythm player except me! They always said he couldn't get his parts right! He was young full of energy and I saw his potential! I always supported him! Guess who went the furthest in the local music scene and is still playing! He never gave up!!

Inspiring words and very true ! Its far to easy to give up, i think many times the main difference between someone that is good at something and succesful and someone that is not is that the first one didnt give up and kept at it and learned and got better. I think its especielly true for musicians and people that create art where there usually isnt any assurance that you will ever make a cent from it.

I agree with the comments here, I’ve wanted to sing all my life, but was discouraged as a kid by my family who told me singing is talent and cannot be learned. I wouldn’t give up though and decided to treat myself to lessons later on when I was a grown-up. I went through quite a few teachers whose approach did nothing for me, and I was close to giving up when I found KTVA and signed up and got the course. After 2 years, I’m still not quite where I’d like to be, but I see SO much improvement! I’ll keep working on it, because I cannot spend a single day without singing; it gives me joy and especially in times like these, it makes my days so much brighter. Thank you Ken, for this video and for sharing your knowledge and experience in your singing course, it’s one of the best things that have ever happened to me.
