He didn’t like the fact that Fergie left out a lot of players when listing his world class players. So getting the story about Keane must have been good copy for those writers at the time. It's too much money involved for the biggest players today. You can't just sack them as if they had a normal price and salary.

Another big reason was that he had a quality captain who was a real leader on the pitch.

I have to agree with you on that…l’m a Liverpool fan…but I have to admit that Ferguson had mastered the art of mind games, knowing how to handle players..and then knowing when the time was right in getting rid of them…those were the reasons why Manchester United were so dominant and so successful under fergie in the 1990s and 2000s

I agree. As much as I like Keane, Fergie was backed into a corner. I think that incident on Man U TV was the last straw. There was a rift between the two for months on end. Around that time, untied was under performing, as they were going through a rebuilding process to compete with league champions Chelsea and Keane the outspoken Irishman was airing his frustrations out at everyone including Fergie. If Fergie had kept him at the club, there was a good chance he could've organized a coup to remove Fergie from the club, and take the hot seat as he was approaching the end of his career and considering management. It probably would not have happened, but Keane did have a tighter grip on the dressing room than Fergie, he was ruthless, hot headed, temperamental, extremely aggressive, held grudges and highly driven. I'm glad he's managed to mellow a lot in his old age and hopefully, they'll manage to let bygones be bygones, and reflect on their careers together.

Beckham just wanted to be famous…with Keane and Van Nistleroy though it was a gradual breakdown in their relationships with the gaffer. Both were his top guys and were slowly being shelved to make room for new players and it began to affect them emotionally

As regards the MUTV interview, Ferguson's rule was that at Man Utd you don't criticise another Man U player in public. It was all done behind closed doors. Keane himself had benefitted from this when Fergie defended him publicly for his various scrapes such as being arrested for assault, the Haaland tackle, being kicked out the world cup. But Keane blatantly disobeyed Fergie's rule by criticising his teammates in a public broadcast. The fact the players were fine with it was irrelevant. Fergie was the gaffer and he felt it was unacceptable. But Keane still wouldn't accept Fergie's authority, and they ended up in a huge row. Fergie showed him who was boss by getting of him 2 weeks later and there was nothing Keane could do about it. His ego was severely bruised and that's why he's still bitter nearly 20 years later. Saipan has a lot of similarities. Keane gave a newspaper interview slaughtering the FAI, Mick McCarthy and the other players. There was no benefit to doing this during the tournament and it was bound to damage team morale. Keane should've waited until after the tournament to air those grievances but once again he felt he could behave how he wanted being Ireland captain. McCarthy had every right to challenge Keane for the newspaper article, and then send him home when Keane became abusive. No one player is bigger than the team and that included Roy Keane regardless of his contribution.

The decision, the reason i had to explain it because it happened so quickly, but his actions were so quick, for one reason or another he decided to go criticize his team mates. And so most of you have not seen that video but you couldn't release it, we couldn't release it. Ended up with two young players being booed before the game in Paris in the Wednesday. And uh, we decided we had to do something uh the meeting in the room was you know it was horrendous, you know i just couldn't lose my control in this particular situation. And if I had of let it pass and I let it happen I think the players would have viewed me differently, much differently than I would've liked of. And I think that through my career I think I have been strong enough to deal with important issues like that, with Roy he overstepped his mark, absolutely overstepped his mark, and there was no other thing we could do. We did well by him, we paid out his whole contract. We gave him a testimonial in the following season, 75,000. We did everything we could to honour the fact he was a great player for us.

Ferguson handled it poorly… the decision to let Keane go is an entirely reasonable decision based on any number of factors… the MANNER in which Ferguson carried out that decision showed mean-spiritedness and a personal motive above all else… it is the cause of many players from that era beginning to qualify their respect for Ferguson rather than unabashed, unqualified loyalty - they did not appreciate the way Keane was treated after all he had given for the team and it made them realise they were nothing more than commodities to Ferguson…🤷‍♂️
