SITES Spectre: Think of it as an SMG, not a pistol

The SITES Spectre was originally developed by the SITES company (Societa Italiana a Technologie Speciali SPA) of Torino to be the best police and counterterrorist submachine gun on the market. To this end, they studied the other guns on the market and what made a good SMG. The results were rolled into the Spectre design - things like minimal width (about 35mm), no protrusions to the sides, ambidextrous controls, closed-bolt operation, quad-stack magazines, and a double action trigger option in place of a traditional manual safety. The gun went into production in 1985 as the Model 2…but did not garner many sales.
It was shortly updated to the Model 4 with improved sights and stock, and better disassembly procedure. It was also released as a semiautomatic pistol and carbine, in an effort to create some cash flow on the civilian market. The standard version was in 9x19mm, but it was also sold in .40 S&W, 9x21 IMI, and .45 ACP. Importation into the US lasted until 1993, and the guns were never all that popular. As a submachine gun it was a fine design, but simply not better enough than its competition to bring sales in a market crowded with other options. As a semiautomatic pistol, it was heavy and awkward (6.4 pounds / 2.9kg unloaded). SITES went out of business in 1997 and the rights were purchased by Swiss company Greco Sport. They continued to manufacture them until 2001, and went out of business themselves in 2006.

It's a little different in GoldenEye Source, but on N64 the guns all defaulted to aiming straight at Oddjob's head. @Jeddostotle7

The only part I still don't understand is what pushes the hammer-stopping bar downwards, so that when the trigger is pulled and that T-bar moves out of the way, it then allows the hammer-stopping bar to drop, allowing the linear hammer to move forward. Is it the surface on the linear hammer being angled, and the surface on the hammer-stopping bar being curved? Like, the spring tension on the linear hammer would cause the linear hammer to release from that bar due to the angled/curved surfaces, except for the T-bar blocking the stopping bar from moving down far enough to do so until the trigger is pulled?

@literal_f22

Isn't 9x21 more powerful than 9x19?
@stevailo
@stevailo 2 года назад
@@literal_f22 not really, since bullet is set deeper, the overall length is the same, and so is the powder charge, resulting in an almost identical cartridge. Technically, I think 9x21 can take a little bit more of abuse, so it would be better for things like developing really hot competition loads without breaking cases, but the difference is minimal enough that every single non-Italian pro shooter develops those loads with normal 9x19 components. And now that the ban has been lifted, we are going towards 9x19 too, and we’re doing it way faster than I was expecting

One thing they tried in italian market was to sell "a pistol that looks like a SMG" - basically, for italian laws is not that difficult to issue a pistol to private guards, security people and such. A SMG isn't avaiable for civilians under no condition whatsoever. So a security guard out of a bank may carry a pistol (or some kind of a rifle, not a SMG like police or Carabinieri does. Spectre filled the gap: it's a pistol, but the common people and bad guys would see a bulletproof-vested, police-level armed guard.

No more than 125 of the stocks were ever imported, saw one on Gunbroker a few months back that sold for around $1,600 but I unfortunately didn't have any fun money at the time. The 30 round mags go for about $250, not sure about the 50 rounders. I know a guy who is making a small run of repro stocks, said he expects to set the price at around $600-$675. Haven't spoken to him since we last talked about it so I'm not sure if he finished them yet but he had expected to be done by this last December-January.

I used this, a Jati, and several 'other' SMG/Machine Pistols during my time in South and Central America in the 80's and late 90's, with the U.S. Army. Were good weapons I thought. Sometimes getting mags were an issue.

Love mine! It definitely needs the top folding stock to be practical, and the forward grip. Not much recoil when shooting probably largely due to it's weight. Fun facts: They were only imported by two companies, FIE and American Arms, Inc. Mine is the American Arms. They are identical except the FIE chamber end OD is slightly larger and won't fit into AA rear bbl support. Also, some very early FIE guns have thicker wall magwell steel and will only accept a very rare thin wall magazine. FIE imported them first for a while until they went out of business in 1990, due to the first "Assault Weapons" ban and American Arms bought the rights to import the Spectre. AA imported all the calibers 9mm, .40S&W and the .45ACP. being the rarest. There was only 1,000 9mm, 300 .40S&W, and 100 .45ACPs imported. The AA .40S&W can have feeding issues with the blunt nose ammo apparently. The magazines are modified 9mm mags and hold 22rds instead of 30rds. They didn't convert 50rd mags because they couldn't get them to feed. You can convert a 9mm Spectre to .40S&W or vise versa by changing the barrel, bolt and magazine. You can't convert a .45ACP because it has a spot welded in adapter for the 2 column mag. The .45 is dedicated to it's caliber. I have a mag for the .45 also, because why not? Due to the rarity I figure I might as well jump at the chance to get a mag for one. Also, there were no more than 125 stocks imported into the US. One was actually up on gunbroker a few months ago and ended up selling for around $1,600 if I remember correctly. I unfortunately did not have fun money for it at the time. But someday I will get one and SBR mine. To attach it most have to be modified by drilling a hole in the rear latch section that holds the sight in, but some actually came with it already; mine is one of the lucky ones that came with it.
@kevinwilson9589
@kevinwilson9589 4 года назад
Mine was the early version with the thin blued (not phosphate) magazines. The steel was so flimsy that sometimes just setting the filled mag on the table would cause rounds to spit out. That was one of the reasons I got rid of mine. The other reason was I felt the trigger was made from too thin gauge steel for that heavy double action pull.

Man I had 2 of these. One as a shooter and one NIB. Cool pistol for sure. Too bad the parts and mags are hard to get and expensive. Be gentle with the plastic levers. I recall the SMG was similar in the internals and that striker is what was supposed to pump the air.
@bitfreakazoid
@bitfreakazoid 6 лет назад
Yeah! That charging handle is plastic and feels kind of flimsy and cheap, which is odd because the rest seems really well made. I bought a spare one for mine just in case. The guy I got my stuff from said that they did break sometimes.

This is really weird. I was just searching this gun yesterday after learning it was the gun the phantom was based off of. And now you have a video on it the same day i learnt about it. Ian, can you please make a video on both the Kel Tec Su16, and the RFB. The Su16 is the only AR i know of that can legally carry a 10 round magazine in my native canada and it has a lot of other features that are interesting.

I had one of these. The firing pin would develop burrs at the retaining pin and hang fire until the firing pin spring could push it back of the burr. I messed with it for a few months, but it would always start acting up. When it operated correctly, it was fun to shoot.

I remember reading about it in a circa 1991 "Tekhnika - Molodezhi" where it was described as the cutting edge of technology and the future of compact concealable firepower. Something along those lines. The Skorpion and that German stapler gun with weirdly shaped detachable plastic stock were also covered in the same issue.
