I love how I'm learning all the drive time and shift time rules for my HGV licence and you're talking about it as well, really cool how well you know the rules and how to comply with them. Here in the Netherlands you need to pass 3 theory tests, and I passed all of them first try! now onto the real lessions

yeah another Bridgender here. think knowing how bad the main road is to pull out of anytime of day as a car driver just a junction further up on the road that leads to Tremains Road (Kev would vouch as a bad junction to pull out from!! when he has done scrap cars from Brackla), then think if I was driving an artic then would try for the Industrial on the B&Q side of the round-about instead, at least then you got the traffic lights to help slow the traffic down especially with trying to leave sometime between 7-9 am. great vlog Luke

Ref shift lengths its actually not mentioned anywhere how much you can work or how long you can work. Its governed by hours of rest in a 24hr period. If you work 13hrs say, you can still have 11hrs off in the 24hr period (13+11) which is a regular daily rest whereas if you work 13hrs 1m you can then only have 10h 59m rest and is therefore a reduced daily rest. Ultimately it means the same thing to most people as that's hiw we look at it, but it comes across weird because it's governed by periods off of work rather than how much time you spend at work. Planners often cock it up I find and seem to think that doing a 14hr shift and then giving you 11hrs off isn't a reduced rest and all is good but when you explain it to them and say you can't fit 14 and 11 into 24 so it's reduced you often get a blank look in return.
@misterflibble9799
@misterflibble9799 2 года назад
Correct, it's the reduced rest that matters, not the shift length. Taking a daily rest less than 11 hours counts as a reduced daily rest. Working a shift longer than 13 hours counts as a reduced daily rest, even if you take a rest longer than 11 hours (ignoring the multi-manning rules for brevity). You can reduce your daily rest up to 3 times between weekly rest periods.

Hi Luke, i love your videos and you really helped me when i was going through gaining my class 2 licence. Ive been driving a hgv for 8 months now but this week ive begun to lose confidence in myself because of a recent event where i accidently pulled my front driver side light of as i was reversing. Im now paranoid about having future accidents and as such im debating wether or not to carry on as a hgv driver. Do you have any advice that may help? Cheers.

Bumps and scrapes are almost inevitable driving trucks. The fact that the accident bothers you is a good sign. The important points are 1)No one was hurt and 2) You learn from your mistake and move on. Every near miss or incident is an opportunity to learn and improve. Best of luck to you.

Surprized you didn't equal the cross on the last stack of pallets, there is a lot of pallet trucks just putting one strap over with 3 x 4 pallets without the cross on the back never looks safe to me., but I guess being an old hand at this and doing it with ropes it was standard practice to cross the front and back whether sheeted or not

Hi Luke, I'm doing my hgv training and i was just wondering if you have to wait outside a unloading site while another truck is being unloaded how does that affect your driving time?
@ianhepburn6550
@ianhepburn6550 2 года назад
It doesn’t because you are stationary it only affects working time.
@deepfiix
@deepfiix 2 года назад
@@ianhepburn6550 So for that you would change the tacometer to working time? And is that a maximum of 6 hours until a break is required?
@ianhepburn6550
@ianhepburn6550 2 года назад
@@deepfiix When you put your card in tacho you are officially working doesn’t matter if you are getting loaded or unloaded or sitting in traffic you are still working,if you are getting loaded and sitting in cab you put the tacho on break.Driving time only counts when the wheels are turning.
@misterflibble9799
@misterflibble9799 2 года назад
@@deepfiix Waiting to be unloaded could potentially be recorded in up to 3 ways: 1. Other work (crossed hammers). This is the "safest" way to record it. It counts towards your working time for WTD (the "six hours before a break", "average 48 hours per week", "max 60 hours per week" stuff), but it doesn't count towards driving time for Drivers' Hours Regulations. 2. PoA (box). PoA means "Available to work, but not actually working". You're allowed to use PoA only in cases where (a) you have been told the length of time that you're going to have to wait, or (b) you are able to make a reasonable assumption about how long you're going to have to wait. So, in the case in the video, Luke could see that there was a truck in front getting unloaded, and how long it was taking them to unload each pallet, so he could make a reasonable assumption about how long that would take. PoA doesn't count towards working time for WTD. 3. Break (bed). I think it's probably legal to class this time as "break". The rules define "break" as: "any period during which a driver may not carry out any driving or any other work and which is used exclusively for recuperation". Personally, if you're parked up at the side of the road reading a magazine, I don't see much difference between waiting for the truck in front to get unloaded, or for the clock to tick over. I'm happy to be corrected if there are documented cases of drivers being prosecuted for incorrectly recording this time as "break". It's certainly true that you can't unload (or unstrap, or even just supervise someone else unloading) whilst on break, but I believe that it's legal to record the waiting time as "break". If you were in a queue and having to move forwards every few minutes, though, I wouldn't do it. I'd want to have a reasonable expectation that I'm going to be stationary and idle for the full 15 minutes.
