Fantastic presentation of the genius of Chris Ware Danny, I love his work as well as R Crumbs, and yours ranks Third in my Top Three (: I own all your books, a couple of Chris Wares and a couple of R. Crumbs, along with his music CD. Thanks Danny. Also love that you started this series with Hannah Hinchmann too, showing her mad respect (: Tim M.

I took my first “comic book art” commission piece in my 25 year career two months ago. I assumed it was easy, therefore I bid it low. I’m quite certain I earned three dollars per hour once it was complete and delivered. I have a massive new respect for the genre of art now-!! Fascinating artist and book you shared. Thank you!

I really appreciate these Sketchbook Club videos. Introduces us to many different artists and also helps to reaffirm our own practice. I have tracked down and added to my collection through these videos. Thank you!

As much as the thought terrifies me, i would want someone as thoughtful, empathetic and insightful as you to go through my sketchbooks one day. Thank you for a thoroughly enjoyable video :)

Very cool analysis on Chris Ware's comics and sketchbooks! I also love how you described art (especially comics) being lonely (most creative pursuits seem to be though). Although nowadays, social media does a lot to lessen this.

Thank you so much! I'm about to start a series of video essays on my favourite comics and this really helped my research for my Chris Ware video essay. I look forward to watching more of your videos, I'm loving your channel.

thanks for sharing this with us Danny ! My thought (in order) as i was watching this video were : 1. so much amazing work done on a daily, hourly, every minute of his life basis. it felt like he could not stop sketching; tones of great drawings reflecting overthinking; i thought if he was not going to put it on paper all the visual thinking in his head would had blown away his brain. then 2. so, is obvious that he "had a monkey " too. so, to shut his monkey, he could not stop running away (read sketching) but the more he did and the better it was, he got even less confident about himself (and he noted in his sketchbook) so ...yeah...3. shouting your monkey by doing more work, seem not to be such a great solution; what else ? i don't know,... maybe making friends with it, taking your monkey out for a coffee, etc...there MUST be a way of "solving this conflict" with his demon, like you call it... Is like if the demon smelled that you are a good artist, you are f-ed(excuse my french:0) because he will make sure he will squeeze out of you as much art as possible for as long as you are breathing ....is hiding under a "mediocrity blanket " his solution? Anyway, I will look for getting my hands on his work. AMAZING STUFF!!!

I'm probably more of a mainstream comic book fan in that Jack Kirby, Will Eisner & Carl Barks & Lou Fine & C.C. Beck are five of my favorite artists, But I love Chris's artwork, Jimmy Corrigan: The Smartest Kid on Earth really impacted me when I first read it like Art Spiegleman's Maus did. I suppose I love the straightforward unpretentiousness of his art and the beauty of his linework and also the sense of vulnerability and heartbreak in his art and themes, and there's just something about it that connects with the memories of my childhood somehow. Heh, Sorry, My description just can't do it justice.

I think the only other comic/ graphic novel/ whatever you wanna call it that comes close to this special level of weird genius is probably the Sandman series. My favourite media in general is stuff that pervades into your own reality after you read it.

Incredible how someone who could draw anything in any style could be so full of self doubt.

I am constantly shocked and awed by Chris Ware! Not only by his lush sketches but also his finished slick publications. I find his constant self loathing distracting. I know it's him being "honest" but, geez! And the tiny lettering! I have to use a loupe attached to my glasses to read any of it and after awhile I don't bother, I just look at the amazing drawing!! Thanks for the video (and "An Illustrated Life" that turned me on to Ware!) The Charlie Rose interview is no longer to be seen on charlierose.com (apparently the website has been pulled) but can be seen on Bloomberg ...www.bloomberg.com/news/videos/2017-11-15/cartoonist-chris-ware-charlie-rose-video

Its hard not to feel a bit of anger towards Chris Ware for being so self deprecating. His sketches are amazing, any objective person can see that. There is no doubt he has high levels of anxiety and negative emotion deeply routed in his personality. You can't tell an extraverted outgoing confident person to change into an introverted self loathing person, just as you can't ask that of the opposite type.

Thanks for a much competent walk-through of some of the works of Chris Wary. But it hurts my heart - just a little bit - to see you flip through the books with the thump close to the spine making the paper fold! Sorry ;-))
