Since you already sealed this, one thing you can do to accent the shadows is a watered down coat of brown/black as a wash. This would have looked really good with the light color of the wood and hopefully hide some of those horizontal lines a bit. If you have the time, a combination of stain, then seal, then wash can look really cool too.
my mill will not cover that size of model, but I use a similar tapered cutter, but with 0.25mm tip radius. I've found no need to do any roughing passes, but the speeds/feeds need to be correct, to avoid burning. The cutters last a long time, being carbide (Chinese) and about 15gbp from Amazon, a bit cheaper direct from China. Makes a lot of sawdust!
Next time, get some Amazing Glaze from ML Campbell and apply it after you you clear coat and seal. Spray it on and then rub it off with a green Scotchbrite pad until you get exactly the pop you're looking for.
I know this video is a couple years old now.....you wouldn't happen to have the contact info for the person you purchased this from, or a link to the group he is in? Would love to give this design a try
Great video and it looks great. I’ve just started looking at cnc’s and have wanted to get one for three or four years but don’t know enough about it and especially about the machines. I don’t want to have to buy one and then buy another then another. Any suggestions on where to get reliable information? I noticed the Powermatic planer in the background.... Is it a 15 or 20 inch unit and if it is the 15 inch unit do you wish you had bought the larger unit? Do you know of any east coast or mid west companies that have a good selection of CNC’s? I’m an looking for something that can actually do 3D work.. Thanks for your time. Ron
Props screw the haters. They hate the tools used to create this because the dont know how to use them. If it had been created with a steel hand chisel some hater would be o yea lets see you carve it with stone flint screw m.
Couple of questions... how do you hold down the project? In this case you have edges all around to clamp etc, but wonderinf if you were close the edge, double sided tape? painters tape and CA? 2nd question.. How did you get the profile cut around the model? I cant seem to get something trace like that (i use vcarve). thank you
Super wow. I'm wondering if you have special tricks around avoiding chip out on really fine features? Maybe the stuff I'm doing is even finer/thinner walls but chipping has been a struggle to avoid. Curious if that's something your able to predict and/or work around when you see a model and the generated tool paths.
@@ruzaff Ha! It's not like a Star Trek replicator where you just ask the computer and receive the object from thin air. Why can't we appreciate things for their own sake: handmade for the set of skills and dedication that enabled their creation, CNC made items for the different set of skills and dedication that enabled their creation? Reductio ad absurdum would suggest we can only appreciate things made with hand tools forged by a blacksmith from iron smelted from ore personally dug from the earth. Or that the highest level of craftsmanship is chopping trees down with the back of one's hand, subsequently gnawing at the wood with teeth and scratching it into shape with sharpened fingernails. *That* would be hand made. Perhaps we can appreciate the diversity of skills and tools that create beauty without having to belittle anyone's path of expression/creation.
The sculpture looks exactly like from a 3d printer, not carved. It should be polished. The effect is probably satisfactory for the client, but smooth surfaces are better. The project itself requires knowledge and skills, operation of a 3d printer and a vision of the project. Good job
If the ash absorbs stain in weird patterns, couldn't you seal the wood then do a wash to bring out the depth? Sweet video BTW. My friends and I refer to CNC videos as 'CNC Porn', because it's such a thrill to watch the machine mill out the project!
The project looks great, not my cup of tea but I appreciate to work you've done. 12-14 hours of router time? Ugh how are you going to be able to sell that & make some money? What were your feeds & speeds?
Might I ask what software you're using? I'm using the cheap stuff(Dmap2gcode, but I'm not against buying something better (ie: expensive) if I can get better results. And what I find particularly interest is that your software actually cuts the outline of the object, rather than merely cutting horizontal lines, and following a depth map. I'd be quite pleased with the result of your work were it mine.*grins*
Guess my second comment didn’t come through. I did say CNC is for pu$$y! Lol but I actually meant to say that it was still really cool but I accidentally hit the send button before so, then I wrote a second comment saying it’s still cool but it didn’t send I guess... but still let’s see ya do it buy hand
All very nice, but this is NOT carving. Its just a machine and a computer. I can't see any skill in this at all. Mass produced copies for selling on tinternet.....
Bobajob 84 Blah, blah, blah. I suppose you cobble you’re own shoes? Hand forged the engine of your car? Raised, harvested, or killed all of your own food? I see no real accomplishments in your life, just pointless self-superiority to spread on the internet...
@@unknowncomic4107 Actually a time served toolmaker, and teach wood carving, these machines are great, but as I mention, no skill, you can scan anything now and a machine will make an identical item. Once you slide down this slope, where's the joy & creativity people get in working by hand, no matter what level of carving they aspire to, they enjoy it immensely
@@macweenie no superiority from my side, I'm just a guy who appreciates craftsman ship and individuality, something a machine can't. I teach carving and was a time served toolmaker, so have a bit of , dare I say, skill without upsetting anyone
