Not only was the long shot video showing each type of drop great...but so was Nicoles message about ALL that has changed in PB strategy & shots in the last couple of years. We've thrown out several chapters of the book and replaced them with new ones and you guys are one of the few teams teaching this stuff to all on line. We all need to take this to heart and put as much of it as we are able into our own games. Keep up the great work. I was appreciative of your comment below that you rarely go down the line with your drop and prefer cross court. I find the slice drop works well with the extra distance but I need to work on that topspin straight ahead drop you do...awesome action on that ball!

Great video. I recommend viewers look at two things on second watching: 1. Where in the court does Jordan's 3rd shot reach its peak height? 2. Watch the footwork during the final phase, when he is making his way up to the NVZ. No big rush, take a split step whenever the opponent is hitting the ball, and it might take three or more shots to get to the line.

On his first step forward (after the return of his drop shot) he seems to be in 'no man's land'. Should one try to rush all the way up to the net right away or stay back (closer to the baseline) so that you can move back if the return is deep?

Your best video yet. Good to see so many options and variety. The spin on the shots adds so much unpredictability to the flight and bounce of the ball. Those topspin shots from behind the baseline look like a much better option than lobbing when deep

Great video! Love the advice! I have a question about the 3rd shot drop. I'm still learning how to get the 3rd shot drop in consistently while i'm playing. It seems that when I do get a 3rd shot drop, the bounce from the ball when it lands in the kitchen is pretty high. Is it just practice to get the bounce low enough or could be hitting the ball, maybe, too high or hard? Or could it be where the ball is landing in the NVZ? Just noticed that the other night during a game.
@primetimepickleball
@primetimepickleball 3 года назад
Probably a combination of all those things. Practice will help and focusing on your opponents contact point. The goal is to force your opponent to hit up on the ball. So this means even if they volley it, it can STILL be a really good drop. I think you may be focusing on where the ball lands. You can hit an extremely high ball that lands short in the kitchen, but this is a bad shot because it will bounce so high and they can then crush the ball as they have a high contact point. Try to hit drops that peak maybe around 4-8 feet above the net and the drop down a foot or two from the NVZ line.

Jordan....one of the things I listen to is top spin, under spin, slice spin etc. A good idea would be to show the viewers HOW to hit these shots rather than just mentioning them. Paddle position etc. I am a low 4.0 player but feel my game could improve immensely if I am able to hit some of these shots consistently

Hi Jordan, I’m trying to learn topspin dinking (from another video of yours) and tried it out last night and noticed I am definitely hitting the ball from the side and it looks good/drops fast, but my natural instinct/follow through (right handed forehand) is for the paddle to end up to the right of my face as opposed to the left like yours. Someone said this is still a topspin but I wonder if it is? Is it still effective as a topspin or should I try to correct the follow through? Thank you,
@primetimepickleball
@primetimepickleball 3 года назад
That follow through might still be ok, but I would just make sure your form going into the shot is correct. Following up towards the left shoulder should be a natural follow through for a right handed player.

Do you have an aim spot? In other words, do you aim about 2 feet over the net, or instead 5 feet over you own NVZ line?
@primetimepickleball
@primetimepickleball 3 года назад
Hitting it down the line, your arc generally has to be a bit higher than cross court. Also, topspin drops may be hit a little higher than slice drops because the topspin can bring it down. I would say it travels anywhere between 1-4 feet over the net. You can see in this video that it varies. My “aim” is to make them contact the ball low. Whether they can take it out of the air or not, my goal is to get a low contact point.
@bryanyee7
@bryanyee7 Год назад
@PrimeTime Pickleball For these drops, it looks like you swing from your knee level up to but not past the shoulder level on both sides? However, your topspin shot looks like the swing is faster? What is the swing speed for these shots? Also, is that an Engage Pursuit model paddle that you use regularly? I am considering getting one but was wondering what you thought about it.
@primetimepickleball
@primetimepickleball Год назад
Hi Bryan. Your observations are correct. yes, when hitting topspin you have to swing a little faster and get a little more follow through. With spins, you contact less of the ball since you're swiping it rather than making full contact and you need more speed to make up for that and to get the rotation on it. I think we're using the Engage Encore MX 6.0 alnk.to/aLFGF02 in this video. Pursuit is a really good paddle as well. Little more pop and a little less control on soft shots than the Encore. (Apologies for delayed response)
@bryanyee7

@@primetimepickleball Also, is there such a thing as a one handed backhand topspin 3rd shot drop? If so, maybe a technique video of it might be useful. Otherwise please disregard.

cool... I tend to be a little more of a banger when I am deep, but I have a pretty good top spin shot, and if you keep it low enough the bottom still falls out of it when it clears the net.. I like the softer top spin shot as well.. either way, you want them to be defensive rather than offensive... great demonstrations.... love the game, personally I think you need a well balanced game of harder shots ( which I can do well ) and I love the finesse game as well....

Great video, Jordan...! Quick question related to the third-shot drop... When dinking, a cross-court dink has a larger margin of error and can have a lower trajectory yet still go over the net; could you apply those same principles when making a third-shot drop to the opponent on the other side of you...?

@@primetimepickleball Thank you for replying. This is super helpful. How far should one take this principle? Should they try to hit all backhand drops even in the transition zone with a slice? I guess I am wondering when to use a regular flat backhand drop or is that kind of drop more a beginner's move?
@primetimepickleball
@primetimepickleball 2 года назад
I’d focus much more on getting the trajectory of the shot right. If the trajectory of your shot is off then the spin won’t help you. If your trajectory is pretty locked in then you can add more spin. The further up you are in the transition zone it’s tough to get that nice “knifing” slice because the arc of your shot will have to be bigger so it gets up and then down quickly into the kitchen in a shorter space so those will likely need to be hit a bit flatter but yes put a little spin on it if you can. It really depends but that’s the answer in a general sense.
@exploringtheologychannel1697
@exploringtheologychannel1697 2 года назад
@@primetimepickleball So helpful! This seems like the same principle of topspin. It is easier to hit those from deep into the court and for transitions better to just get the ball into the kitchen.

Hi Jordan, I always resort to underspin for my 3rd shot drop for backhand. I've been told by many people that I need to stop "slicing" and start putting topspin on the ball, but it's really my only (consistent) method of dropping the ball into the opponent's kitchen. How important do you think it is for me to develop a topspin backhand drop? As for normal groundstrokes, do you think ONLY slicing for backhand will be detrimental to my game?
@primetimepickleball
@primetimepickleball 3 года назад
No. 99% of the PROS have only an underspin drop on their backhand side. Although I would encourage you to develop a forehand topspin drop along with a forehand underspin drop.

excellent video...new to pickelball so forgive the beginner question...from a tactics pt of view why wouldnt a deep lob 3rd shot to the backhand(or any shot) be the best shot....the court is so small that it really would be very difficult for the returner to pass you..especially if their charging the net...
@primetimepickleball
@primetimepickleball 2 года назад
It might be effective at lower levels where players struggle with their overheads but at higher levels, players have very well developed overheads and would punish you on those. As you say, the court is small so they would get to it and be able to smash it down into your court.
