I’ve lost 128lb ( 9 st) calorie counting overtime a period of two years. I did intermittent fasting ie only eating between 12MD - 8 pm. I’ve maintained my weight loss for 18 months. My maintenance is 1500 cal daily and I’m 5’7 and 57 yrs old

I have a fair grounding in nutrition et cetera and I realise that calorie counting is a good way of measuring the amount of energy that's going into your body. Bit like having a bank balance and not knowing how much money you've got in the bank if you don't count calories......However, I found the biggest drawback to calorie counting for me was I ended up looking at the dial on the scales that was weighing the food rather than the plate. In other words I was more preoccupied with the number of calories I was consuming than what an average portion would look like on a plate which is really important for both weight loss and maintenance. Hope this makes sense.

Yes, that's a very common thing to happen. And the resulting thinking stress for a lot of people often ends in emotional eating.

Hi Harry , I like your videos honesty & when I gave up on diets at the end of last year I managed to use the way of eating you recommend to drop a stone during the minefield season that was December & Christmas . But I’ve got to disagree with the line that IF is just another diet & only about reducing calories . There is a lot of research that been done about the hormonal and other health benefits associated with the various patterns of IF and there are plenty of them . Your suggested way of eating can easily be incorporated into a IF lifestyle . I’m Not having a go at you , like I said , watching your videos helped me a lot last year .

I appreciate your response! If what you're doing works for you and it's helped you lose weight, then that's great. It doesn't matter how you get there. Out of interest, what IF research have you seen? The reason I don't suggest it for most people is that it's just another way reduce calories without addressing the actual reason someone overeats. It creates the black and white mindset of being either on or off a diet and doesn't develop the skills to be able to approach food in moderation without being tempted to eat more.

Well off the top of my head could point you to fledge fitness on RU-vid as he regularly breaks down new studies that have been released about IF. But at the end of the day we are all a study of one and I will say this . When I clean fast with only black coffee and water when I’m not eating , I don’t get the cravings to eat if I’m given the exact same amount of food in a window of say 4 /5 hours compared to eating the exact same amount of food over a 12/14 hour window broken down Into mini meals . Further more I find the longer I practice IF my food choices naturally get better , better quality of food better portion control , appetite correction kicks in so my body tells me if I over restricted one day I need to eat a bit more the next . The timings are also flexible so it’s not a case of being on or off , I can shorten or lengthen the window depending on what life throws at me and what my body is telling me . I would be interested to know if you have done much research on it yourself before deciding you wouldn’t recommend it ? Like I say we are all a study of one but purely for the way it makes me feel and the fact my blood pressure , A1C , and cholesterol Is already coming down I would IF to some degree whether I lost weight or not . I once heard IF described as the health plan with the side effect of weight loss . And that we come for the weight loss but we stay for the health benefits :-) like I say , I certainly appreciate your videos , especially about how to judge portions using your hand so keep up the good work . I just had to mention about the IF thing cos it’s not a diet

@@glen8057 thanks for the reply. I want to preface this again with - I'm not here to change your mind and if it works for you, that's great + well done with the weight loss! So, this is my stance: People like fledge fitness are not scientists - he has a topic of focus on his channel (Fasting) and looks for everything that supports it. This isn't how science is done. With science, you look to disprove a theory rather than prove it. If you want a more accurate interpretation of studies, it's much better to follow nutritional scientists who don't have an agenda. There are lots of great podcasts where they have professors as guests. If you'd like to increase your education around the subject, feel free to email me: harry@harrysnell.com and I'll send you a podcast to listen to. 2. Studies show that most of the effects of fasting are the same as if you calorie restrict in other ways. So it's not the fasting pre-se that creates the effects, but the restriction of calories. So when a study is done on IF and shows positive effects, it MUST also have a control that shows calorie restriction using non-IF methods. This will isolate whether it is the IF or calorie restriction creating the effect. Does that make sense? 3. Yes, I've done extensive fasting myself. I used to do 36-hour fasts to get away with disordered eating. I'd fast to save up the calories for my binges (obviously not good). So it's often used as a coping strategy. I'm not against eating windows and I will often tell my clients to have a cut-off eating window at the end of the day. Not because of any special effects, but because that's when people tend to eat mindlessly. The reason I don't promote IF as such is like I said - it's an easy way to not have to build the skills of eating in moderation (which takes effort). I'd much rather my clients build those skills and then choose if they do IF or not. Especially for emotional eating, when you don't have regular eating patterns and start restricting food, it can exacerbate the issues. For this reason, you have to be extremely careful when suggesting it as a method of weight loss. What I teach is just the basics of how to eat in a simple way. And then if you decide later on that you would like to fast along with that, it would probably work as well. - Just to end. Weight gain in my opinion is a symptom of other things. Usually using food to control your emotions and poor psychological flexibility. To fix a problem, it's much better to fix the root cause than the symptoms, otherwise, you'll be eternally fighting with the issue. IF is just another way to manage the symptoms rather than fixing the root cause (which you may or may not be aware of). I hope all that made sense and could be an interesting topic for a video in the future :)

@@emotionaleatingcoach this is very interesting thanks ☺️ I have one more question. You mentioned about teaching your clients about simple nutrition, what is your stance on beverages whether they sugary or “calorie free” ? I find sugar free sweetened 0 calorie drinks make me more hungry compared to if I was drink plain water or black coffee with my meals ? Any feed back is appreciated ☺️

@@glen8057 So... 1. Black coffee has appetite suppressing effects so that has to be considered compared to water or calorie-free beverages. 2. If you are substituting something calorie free for something you used to eat with sugar, this is a coping strategy rather than fixing the issue with being able to control yourself around cravings. There's nothing wrong with calorie-free, but if you are using it for the purpose above, the you're keeping the emotional eating neural pathways active. 3. Many people get cravings after eating something sweet because it starts that "brain negotiating" where it tries to get you eat more. Is that what you mean by being hungrier? To differentiate, when you get hungrier after drinking calorie-free drinks, would a carrot (assuming you like them) satisfy you or would it need to be something sweet and extra nice?

Hello! You're allowed to have your own opinion. And well done on your weight loss. From my experience and the 100s of women who come to me, it just doesn't provide enough for most people to lose weight successfully. A lot of people are now investigating SW... the BBC recently did a podcast on how harmful it can be.
