To be fair, corey had no choice but to do cleaner singing after the iowa tour because if his brutal vocals lacking technique. His career would have been over had he continued screaming like he did before.
What helps me accept the huge rollercoaster between the hard and soft melodic is that this whole album is meant to embody these two sides of a person (the nameless has these two extremes right against one another). So circle is this.... down... blue and depressed and feeling part. But then comes the manic part... its the two going back and forth and the suffering driving you to insanity and doing fucked up things to yourself and others.
Subliminal Verses is misunderstood he needed to come up with new vocals bc he could barely talked. They were fucked up mentally during those albums iowa and Vol 3
Vol. 3 is by far my favorite Slipknot album. It's more mature and musically advanced and interesting than anything they've done prior and really, anything they've done after too. This criticism always happens when bands change their sound, the fanbase splits in two. You have one side that just wants the band to stay the same and never change because their musical tastes are limited and isn't open-minded to new things and then you have the other side who's a little more open-minded and craves new things and fresh innovation and that's what Vol. 3 was at the time. Just because it's not as adolescently heavy like the first two albums doesn't mean it isn't good. The first two Corey albums were great for what they were, but they were total one-trick pony's. Vol. 3 introduced dynamics, introduced that Jim and Mick are really good guitar players that are capable of much more than being confined to simple nu-metal guitar stereotypes, and it introduced that Corey can sing really well and it'd be a waste to not utilize that more. People who know music really know Vol. 3 was the album that took them to the next level and the people that still insist that it's bad are usually the same people who's music tastes haven't advanced an inch since adolescence. Open up your mind and expand your horizons. Learn how to appreciate things instead of being a bitter old critic about everything like this guy.
I think of Circle as a palate cleanser. Switch it up a bit so you can better appreciate the heavy stuff. Putting all the slower songs in their own album would defeat that purpose. It just makes for an interesting contrast within the album, like how the softer chorus and wild verses in The Nameless contrast each other within that song.
This comment is gonna be long: Actually this album is deeper than u think, Slipknot were being SO backlashed and hated back then they were being rly criticized by ppl and the media saying their songs are just noises and screams and that Corey Taylor couldn't write a song without profanity, so they were sick of this and create this album the 1st ever to have guitar solos, great percussion like a good technical percussion, the 1st album with more melodic stuff and without any F bombs or S words, but still with that rawness and chaotic sound, they literally shut the media up, that's why this album has more melodic stuffs, I dont mind the melodic stuff actually, for me this album still rly have, yes it's less heavy than the 1st 2 but they still manage to bring that intensity with a more "polished" work, songs like The Blister Exists, Three Nil, Pulse of the Maggots, The Virus of Life, Vermilion, Welcome, they go so hard even in the same level of their 1st 2 albums, rly fast and chaotic, it's like a controlled chaos, btw it only has 2 full melodic songs, btw it's called Subliminal Verses because has a lot of deep lyrics if u analyze them, u said u weren't into The Nameless lyrics even tho if u analyze them it's not a beautiful cute "I love u" thing, the lyrics are "The only thing I loved was hate, u will be mine! Obey Me! Dont even disagree, now suffer into me, you are nothing more u are something less, u deserve it! Your mine! I know who u are" and then the next song is The Vírus of life continuing with this creepy now more of a stalker dark creepy vibe, there's actually a theroy that says "Vermilion" "The Nameless" "The Virus of Life" and "Danger Keep Away" are connected if u again analyze the lyrics u see him talking about this girl, about how she isnt real, and stuff, something like: a guy who has a sick obsession for a girl and wants to kidnap her, Vermilion pt2 he's depressed that she doesn't love him so in The Nameless he is pissed about it and decided to go off on her and being possessive The Virus of Life he stalkes and abuse her, Danger Keep Away he kills her or kills himself (??) I dont remember the theory but it's a good theory, even tho I do believe some songs are connected, I dont know if all of them are about the same story, Btw you should've listened to the album version of Duality, Vermilion and Before I Forget, these songs are longer and better in the album version, idk why they changed it for the Music video, duality is longer and that riff is longer and has more screams and the song ends with Corey screaming "ALL I'VE GOT IS INSANE" in a deep voice, they made a mistake for shortened the guitar solo of Vermilion and that part u enjoyed "She's the only one that makes me SAAAAD!" Corey holds the "Sad!" Growl for 13 SECONDS in the album version but they shortened that as well, and the song actually ends with him screaming "SHE ISN'T REAL I CAN'T MAKE HER REAL" but they didn't include that 😢, and Before I Forget is a lil cleaner longer and the scream in the chrous is more audible, overall this album is my fav along with their 1st 2, I love how they prove the media they do know how to write and make songs with a actual lyrics without F bombs and S words, they showed they have great percussions and guitar solos, They would never thought Slipknot could make ballads, Btw if u hated those 2 melodic songs I think u are gonna hate their All Hope Is Gone album, since the full album with the extra songs have more full Melodic songs, All Hope Is Gone is the most hated album by fans because, even tho Corey came back with his deep gutural vocals(even deeper than his IOWA vocals) it lacks the energy and agression everything is so polished (talking about the sound quality, while Vol.3 is more polished than their 1st 2 Albums, still have a raw feeling to it compared to the sound quality of AHIG) the sound is so clean and polished, most of the songs are so slow and groove, they arent fast or makes u headband like a crazy and goes off, and for some reason I found Corey's melodic vocals a little too much, it sounds SUPER clean almost robotic in some songs, while in Vol.3 he does some clean vocals in the hooks, but has a more raw raspy tone, but overall I love AHIG, is their most death metal album with we are talking about vocal delivery and the percussion in some songs, btw u talked about system of a down, do u know all of their songs or u just listened to their popular songs? Coz would be amazing if u reacted to their 1st 2 albums (my fav ones by them) and their demos (their demos are so agressive)
Hey mate, I felt the same as you when Metallica bought out Load!! I pulled my head out my arse (or got old) and love all their albums (except Saint Anger) . The first album I loved of Slipknot is Vol 3, but would never call it rock!!!!
slipknot built up a massive die hard fan base doing brutally heavy shit and took it to the top of the charts. It captured the feeling a lot of kids had at that time and was important to us and very personal. They literally threw all of that in the trash for the approval of critics and pissed right in our faces. You went to slipknot for slipknot, not stone sour. It was slipknots version of Metallica’s black album
Fun fact, that somehow gets unnoticed - Vermilion is based on a sample from the song "Solaris" by the band Failure (from their 1996 album). The trick is that they disbanded in 1997 due to constant commercial failures (as the name requires, lol) and drug abuse in the band, but became cult classics in 2000s (Paramore, Underoath, M83, Maynard James Keenan and dozens more artists are their fans) and reunited in 2013, releasing then three more extremely great albums.
There are some good song and great parts on this album. But I hate the production. Is so sterile. Cory’s scream also sounds like shit to me. I actually kind of prefer All Hope is Gone just because the production is better.
I feel what you mean. After self titled apparently someone in "the business" told them that if they made a bunch of wait and bleed type songs for the radio that they'd be huge and so they put out Iowa instead which is one of the heaviest albums ever so then to go from Iowa to Vol.3 absolutely felt like a bit of a betrayal. I think a lot of Slipknot fans that started out with Vol.3 have trouble understanding where those of us that started with self titled in real time (as the albums came out) were coming from when we say stuff like betrayal or disappointed. When that first album came out back in 99 there was absolutely nothing like it. The feel of the CD booklet with the pictures of the band members around that tank in some industrial place and sid wrapped in plastic in that chair etc really lent to it an atmosphere that struck a lot of people. Then Iowa comes out and takes what they did on self titled and mixes in even more heaviness. When self titled dropped back in 99 the internet was still like the wild west and information about the band was almost nonexistent. We didn't have a way to just look up a band and know every little detail about them back then and in a way I think that was so much better because it lent an air of mystery that isn't really present in bands these days. All we knew is that there were 9 crazy dudes in orange boiler suits and wicked diy masks that wouldn't look out of place sitting in a dark basement stitching their mask together before they go out and stalk and k!ll someone. We never would have thought that Slipknot would go in the direction they ended up going in with Vol.3. For me personally it ended up growing on me just as every album eventually has (with the exception of TESF because that album suuuuuucks). I've been a huge fan literally since their self titled album dropped in 99 but I find that the more I learn about the band the less I like what I learn. They have really become everything they've always claimed to be against. Corey and Shawn have everyone in the band by their short and curlies and they walk around on egg shells as to not be let go due to artistic differences. Corey went from being one of the realist dudes to being another fake Hollywood type and Shawn just gets high on his own sh!t. It's truly sad.
Hey mate, just to let you know - there is another version of this album called the special edition. It has 2 extra songs on it called "scream" and "don't get close". They are 2 of the best ones on the album in my opinion, they're heavy. For a bit of background I am a bit like you. I am a huge fan of the first few of slipknot's albums (including M.F.K.R), Used to listen to a lot of slipknot then stopped listening to them and moved on to heavier, more groovy bands like after the burial, whitechapel, chelsea grin, currents amon amarth etc. Anyway, rant over. Really enjoying the content dude, keep it up.
nice, i'll check those out! reminds me of fear factory's obsolete. the original 10 tracks were okay, but with like 5 or 6 bonus tracks, the album as a whole totally changed for me.
Scream and Dont Get close should've been on the album replacing Circle or Welcome (I'm not the biggest fan of Welcome but it grew more on me, specially the middle part towards the end, and if I'm not mistaken Circle is about Corey's father I think)
A bit off topic, but have you relistened to any de mysteriis dom sathanas since your last video? You seem to have the metal genes required to actually appreciate that album for its musicality, which most metalheads don't.
Great video! This is probably an obvious comment, but I’d love if you’d react to the rest of their stuff after Volume 3. This, and your “The End So Far” reactions were great. Also for “The Nameless” you pointed out how the lyrics on the singing part didn’t sound very Slipknot, but if you read all of the lyrics they fit amazingly together :)
I get ya. That happened to me with other bands, like Trivium. Vengeance Falls and Silence in the Snow disappointed me more than anything in my life. Nowadays I like VF a bit more, but SITS is still dogshit in my head. Not metal, not rock, just bad music period.
Completely agree with you, Corey Taylor turning Slipknot more and more into Stone Sour is what made the band suck. They should've quit a long time ago.
slipknot and stone sour do not sound the same, even on the stripped back songs on vol 3 for instance have electronic elements to them heck the guitars between vermilion pt2 and through glaas sound different and they're both played by jim root.
