Sloth Party Sunset

Daylight Savings Time has befallen Sloth Party. We barely get there by sunset, so there is only a few minutes of hunting without a light. We are so lucky to have access to this site so whether we collect by natural light or head lamp, it doesn't matter. We are here to dig fossils, particularly shark teeth. When we're fortunate, we find the massive teeth of megalodon, one of the most awesome predators the Earth has ever known. These giant shark teeth are more numerous at this spot than most others we collect. Not because there were more megalodons right here, but because of geologic good fortune. The sharks were here in the area currently known as Charleston South Carolina millions of years ago because their food was here. They primarily ate whales but they would snack on marine mammals, other sharks, and anything else that was in the wrong place at the wrong time. For millions of years, their teeth fell to the ocean floor and became fossilized. The ocean levels have risen and fallen numerous times over prehistory, and the constant wave action consolidated all those fossils together in the same layer, generally speaking. During the ice age, rivers coursed through the area and eroded that that layer in some areas, piling everything together in massive deposits like the one we hunt at Sloth Party. Its not like this everywhere, and we know how rare it is to find a one of those piles so we are hunting it as much as we can. Who knows when it will be over? We collect like today is the last day every time we come here.

What a great hunt. I'm glad to see the sloth party is still giving them up. The jaw fragment is awesome. Is that the first sloth jaw fragment that you have found? Thank you I do appreciate your videos!

The weather is cooling off here in Florida. Planning a trip to the Peace River for Thanksgiving to look for fossils. When the water is warm, the gators are mating and become really aggressive. The chances are 1 in a million you get eaten, but never zero. I wish I had a place like sloth party in my back yard. I want Meg teeth, but don't want to die for them.

good plan waiting until the water cools down to go to florida! nobody wants to be on the business end of a gator. there's always something guarding the treasure. Good luck down there!

When you found that piece of bone all I could think of was a fragment of an Edmontosaurs jaw I have and thought "but what teeth would fit?" That's a trip maker for sure Also super jealous of that larger Angie. I have one almost the same level of completion but missing the tip

It is always a great feeling when fossil teeth fit into jaw holes! I bet it is much more difficult with dinosaurs.

@@ReturnoftheCollector yikes that's bad. its a huge place tho there has to be something left out there. you might have to dig under one of those little scrub pine trees to get to some untouched layer.
