One thing that all gardeners have in common is the need to be patient! Plants grow on nature's time, not man-made time, which can be a tricky thing to learn at first! Since time can go by so quickly, though, it can be pretty rewarding to see how patience can pay off. What's that old saying, that the best time to plant a fruit tree was 10 years ago?
Our chiku (chico sapote, sapota, sapodilla) has now been in the ground for two years, and we're crossing our fingers that we can get it to fruit one day! We babied it during its first year in the ground, but this past summer and current winter have shown us that it really loves its microclimate! We mulch heavily, feed organic foods about once a month, and water by hand to really watch how much it needs. If we are able to get this guy to flower and fruit, we'll be looking foward to eating awesome brown sugar-pear flavored fruits!
