Pac-Man has always been an underrated fun character imo. He’s got his lame projectile moments, but he can also SCRAP when he has to. All his aerials are insane and his grab is also great.
I know. An Underdog admitting they were wrong in judging a “lame” character seems surreal lol! Only crazier possibility would be if Little Z were to admit he was wrong on some characters! 😂
@@AlinaAniretake yeah, I actually like Male Robin a bit more. Robin is usually male in the games, like Warriors and Engage. Female Robin is nice but Male Robin is much cooler.
@@MosesX-Labs Do they do that thing like in PQ2 where both the male and female protagonists are different characters or do they mainly just do male robin?
I'm very happy you've given both Corrin and Robin a fair chance, and for it to turn out positive. As a Robin player myself, I will say Nosferatu is quite satisfying to hit, since it's basically a bad grab. On top of that, Elwind Spiking is quite rare, but boy is it satisfying to pull off!
Robin definitely deserves more love than he gets - he’s so much fun and offers such an interesting and unique challenge to the game that most of the characters that are generally “popular” can’t compete with. He offers so much creativity with combos and kills, and is easily one of the coolest characters in the game in my opinion. Seeing him finally get some love is awesome, and I hope more players start to see the fun he offers.
I was hoping Robin was gonna make the cut. Her versatility is crazy, and even when you only have the bronze sword, killing with jab3 on neutral get up from the ledge is really satisfying. I also like hitting her down b on reaction when people are habitually shielding after teching or getting up on platforms.
I'm so glad that toon link was up there. By far the most interesting link imo. Other characters I would recommend are (hear me out) Mii swordfighter, lucario and Megaman. Although not underrated as such, Kirby is also incredibly fun
Toon link has always been my favourite, his play style matches the actual game so much, using different tools to deal damage to enemys, and not having an outright broken gimmick or annoying spammy feeling
Awesome to see you trying these characters again. I’ve actually enjoyed corrin and robin for a while now and it’s cool for you to finally acknowledge how fun they can be despite their fire emblem status!
A video I didn’t expect, but am super happy to see & it really drives a good message! It’s ok to have a certain group of fighters you like to play most and you don’t have to like every fighter, but it can’t hurt to every once in a while just give some other fighters (some you may have dunked on in the past) an honest chance. Some may surprise you!
Me, the Corrin and Robin player, for the first time in actual recorded history, gets to smile at my characters being talked about in a positive light in an Underdogs person’s video. Thank you, Hop.🎉🎉🎉
I feel like Robin is one of the most underrated characters in this game. Considering the potential Link gets just from being able to z-drop his remote bomb, Robin could be absolutely insane when you consider having two sets of aerials and projectiles. If Robin wasn’t one of the three slowest characters in the game, I can see a timeline where Robin was a common pick in competitive play.
bowser jr actually has a lot of fun tools to play around with like side B giving you a free third jump essentially, using up B to bait people both with the clown car itself and the hammer move, cannonball still having a hitbox AFTER it clashes with something, and ALL the stuff you can do with mechakoopas mechakoopas dying on shield does nerf him a lot from smash 4 but he still has a lot he can do
I love how this video is just hopcat falling for some of my favorite underrated characters. Like these are all points for why I fell for them too. Pac gets hate for camping but he's such a good close range character and he's more fun than other zoners because EVERYTHING in his kit can interact with each other so there's so much you can do that feels good to put together. Corrin is hands down one of the most unique Swordies overall, counter is perfect for calling out dair spammers like G&W or Bowser since it sends up, every tilt and aerial has a natural feeling followup, and all their specials are unique concepts like stage/wall piercing Pin and stun projectile followed by an optional heavy hit Toon link is the least mashy link, he has no overly safe move so his combos with bombs and boomerang actually feel like something you earned and there's no safe option (Link/Yink nair) that you feel is a solution to literally any problem.
Fun fact, there’s actually a tech you can do with Corrin down air that if you hit the opponent at the right angle and spam jump you can actually footstool them out of the dair. It’s super fun 🤩
Bowser Jr is an underrated fun character. His gameplan is so much more than side b, and his huge disjoints make air to air fighting and edge guarding a breeze. Killing people at 50% with side B to up b is fun too tho.
Some Corrin tips. Back Air can help recover if facing towards the stage. If you're not facing towards the stage you can side b to turn yourself around 1st. If you jump off down air you can make if back to ledge but with a very specific set of circumstances. You have to be facing backwards when jumping off so you can magnet hands the ledge when you come back up, you have to time the down air, jump then up b pretty tight and you have to angle up b backwards. Hope this was helpful for anyone who read this.
Could you try some bowser jr? The side B is great at starting combos, kill confirms and as a tool in general, the cannon ball has the same pressure factor you talk about in the video, the mechakoopa has insane combo potential and the Up B kills too easily. Also both the F-smash and down tilt are positive in shield and the jab is really strong. Great video and would love to see a part two.
As a corrin main, you found out exactly what I always tell people. So glad you made this video, hope it has other people be more open minded to characters they never gave a shot.
7:05 the reason why this happens is because in smash ult, if the opponent is in hitstun when they enter the bottom blastzone they die immediately. So in the specific clip you showed, or on any stage with a close bottom blast zone really, as long as you're still in the dair when you enter it with the opponent they will just instantly explode. Very cool mechanic, Sakurai, thank you.
I think you should give Zelda a try. She has an unfair reputation of being exclusively "run away to charge Phantom" but that's just the default online mode because that's the easiest way to play her. If you watch Nairo play her then he's super aggressive and rarely presses the B button at all, and Silinator's Zelda is more balanced in the projectile use but doesn't look lame when he's playing it. I'd also recommend Kirby. He suffers from the same challenge that Robin does with the speed, but one of the reasons I find him so fun to play is there are about a hundred reliable setups into inhale, meaning even a middling Kirby can ALWAYS get the copy ability if they want to. And Kirby gets a lot of mileage out of some of them!
Probably my favourite video Peter’s made already. I always like it when someone plays Pac-Man or Robin in the Underdogs and their weird mechanics lead to some funny interactions, so I’m definitely looking forward to Peter giving them more screen time when the Underdogs videos catch up to this development next year.
Could I just say that robin is a character that I really like but never said anything about it because I thought that people would not like that opinion
This is why I just figure out how to play _every_ character. Not on a competitive level by any means, but I pretty much know every move by memory for the most part and know how to use every character well enough to easily defeat most lvl 9 CPUs. The characters I describe as "my mains" are the ones I enjoy playing the most and have more practice with. Even Mega Man, who I despise playing as, I know how to play as. (Also Doc is my favorite main sooo)
Robin is easily one of my favorite characters. They’re so fun to play, and have a lot of unique aspects that are really rewarding to learn. Though having your aerials hit like Bowser back air 50% of the match, and hitting like Little Mac the rest of the time takes some getting used to.
As someone who loves pac man, corrine, and robin I absolutely loved this video great work! It might be a fun series to play characters you ignored most the time but only if that would be fun for you
If you do this again I would love to see Ridley, Richter, Isabelle, and Marth. Those middle seem boring and campy but are a blast if you play them aggressively almost like how someone would play Roy
In my opinion, Corrin is worth playing just because of her up-air. Literally my favorite up-air in the game, and it taught me how to use landing up-airs, which is one of my favorite approach options with a lot of characters
Good to see you enjoy playing some new fighters. It's one of the reasons I have such a hard time to find a real "main character" for me, since I just have so much fun playing so many different characters.
My favorite thing about Corrin that went unmentioned here is her charging hitbox on forward smash. It makes for such a powerful ledge trap setup, or spot dodge read. My favorite Robin thing that went unmentioned is how dummy strong her gentleman's jab is. The rapid jab is pretty nuts too, but jab 3 with the fire book takes stocks at such criminal percents for a move that combos off something as safe and fast as jab 1. Budget Terry. Also appreciate seeing some Toon Link love. I think he's easily one of the most slept on characters.
Ok, I loved this video. My main is Corrin and my secondary is Robin, so seeing both of them being recognized in one video feels really good. Also I agree with Pac-man and Toon Link being underrated, I also used to look at them as lame but after seeing more of them I learned that they can be preaty fun and seeing this video has given me some motivation to try them out.
you know when you mentioned great blue, it really brought back a memory I had suppressed for a long time. one that I would forget subconsciously because of the sleepless nights it had caused. It's coming back to me now, I remember if distinctly. It was that damn Weapon Reskins in TF2 have always seemed like a strange case to me. On one hand if you like how a weapon works but hate how it looks it's nice to have another option to choose from. But on the other hand, reskins usually look like they would function differently from their counterpart. And I've always thought it would be neat if cool looking weapons like the maul had more of an identity than "Its the Homewrecker but for rich people" So I took a large number of weapon reskins currently available in the game and gave them their own set of stats ranging from "Slightly modified side grade to the original" to "Completely new weapon idea that's not balanced at all but a ton of fun."
I would love to see this become a series and not just highlight the Characters you gained newfound appreciation of, but like the outro, also demonstrate ones that just genuinely didn't click with you. I like the idea of stepping outside of one's biases and trying to see why people would love these characters, even if they aren't your thing. I think a good next pick, for my biases at least, would be Belmont. Simon, personally, but Richter works just as well. Simon and Richter have been much maligned for being lame due to having so many projectiles, and that is most of what people focus on them for: Projectile spam. I find it personally more rewarding to play them like I'm playing a Castlevania game, or as an example from this video, the way you approached Toon Link. The focus is the Vampire Killer, and getting the big damage there. The Subweapons (Cross, Axe, and Holy Water) are there to control space and apply pressure to bait mistakes or approach from angles that the opponent isn't prepared for. Throwing Cross backwards to have it travel further towards the opponent to potentially combo break, lobbing Axes at odd angles to drastically disrupt an approach, or catch your foe off stage in a way they can't avoid anymore. All to get thet Whip to land exactly where you want, WHEN you want. You are the Vampire Hunter, and THEY are the Hunted.
I’ve always liked Robin and Corrin as characters. I’ve never been great with either, but they’ve always been fun for me. I’m glad you were able to appreciate the same things about them that I do.
I think that the moral of this vid is that every character in this game is fun, you just have to find a way to make them fit you. Also, please try Rosa, you’ll be shocked by how easy and fun it is to use Luma without knowing the techs.
My thoughts on these four: I’m not a Pac-Man main, but whenever I play him the matches get so fun. The diversity of the bonus fruit make sure you have something for almost any situations. I used to play Corrin as my secondary, but now I only play her occasionally due to finding characters I like playing more but I still play her some and it’s always fun. Plus, my friends always get mad when I play Corrin and it’s kinda funny Ngl. My little brother mains Toon Link but never really knew the best way to play him, so your advice after testing him out is going to help my brother get better at his character a lot. Robin was someone I played a TON in 4 and early Ultimate. I still play her some nowadays but not as much as I used to, but she’s still very fun to use. I’m honestly surprised she’s as looked over as she is since she was the first non-swordfighter Fire Emblem character which people love to complain about.
Regarding Corrin's down air, I'm guessing the main thing that determines whether the opponent dies first or not is their fall speed, cuz if their fall speed is fast enough than they'll trigger the higher up spike blastzone when hit by Corrin down air.
I literally play all of these characters ALL THE TIME!! Robin and Pac-Man are even my co-mains. I’m so glad you made this video because it felt like every Smash RU-vidr plays the same unga bunga characters and hate all the “unpopular” characters. Every character deserves the spotlight!
Rosalina & Luma was a nice twist for me. She has quite slow moves but since the hitboxes are big and she's very floaty it feels like you're combo-ing someone in space when you pull it off
I would love to see you give mega man an honest shot. If you go into the same applying pressure mindset you did with toon link, mega man can feel super rewarding. Conditioning reads with the lemons and metal blade is so satisfying.
About Toon Link, I am a toon link main. Yes, his play style is predictable and applies pressure, but the main reason I play toon link is because it’s fun. The first game I ever played was Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, so I fell in love with his move set when I played smash 4. I just stuck with him.
As someone who enjoys every single Smash character to some degree, I'm stoked to see you giving characters a second chance! In a game with _this_ much variety, it opens up so many new possibilities!
I’ve always liked Robin basically for the same reasons. She’s not my main so to say but I pick her up from time to time and usually have fun. The only time I don’t really enjoy a match is when you play against someone like Fox or Mythra who just rush you down and give no time to charge but knowing I could just kill them in 1 to 2 combos after I get out makes it feel worth it
Some of the most underrated characters imo are definitely the mii trio with the right moves for your style (which takes time to feel out since there are so many to combo together), pirrahna plant, and mewtwo
I've had the opposite experience over the years lol, I always knew they were way better than they got credit for and could be really cool, but after a bit too much experience fighting good ones, they're now one of my most hated characters to play
Hell yeah, Corrin and Toon Link are some of my favorite characters to play (although I do recognize that I only really pick Toon Link over the others because I like the art style), and I do think Pac-Man and Robin are both pretty dope to play, even if I don't feel like I've ever gotten particularly good at either. I am also a psycho that plays male Corrin...... it helps that one of his victory lines is him going "I WIN!" in this way that reminds me of CD-i Link and makes me laugh every time (female Corrin has an equivalent with similar energy where she just says "Good." that I do also enjoy, and I do tend to swap between the two depending on what I'm feeling, but yes).
As a Pac-Main, I appreciate you realizing how aggressive (and funny) Pac can be. I definitely get a lot of mileage out of the Side B with the dot line. Angle it towards the ground and you have a powerful dash, curving it off-stage can work as a good recovery, and you can purposely whiff it to heal yourself with the power pellet. (Also harassing people with the melon is hilarious, because you can throw it out blindly and pray that your opponent gets caught by something so slow and easy to avoid)
sometimes you win as Corrin with down air is because past a certain percent, when the knock back passes some threshold and becomes considered a spike, they are "being spiked" and hit the spike blastzone, which is actually a little higher than the regular blastzone
When it comes to Robin, I think more than them being another FE character (they were only the 4th added, so fatigue hadn’t really set in yet) or being from the least popular Smash game, they get so overlooked because they’re a fairly complex character thanks to the resource management aspect and the two swords being controlled with tilt and smash attack inputs, but they’ve never really been, well, good enough to justify getting over that initial hurdle for newer players. A lot of overlooked characters in Smash (ICs, Wii Fit, Rosalina, Duck Hunt, and Plant to name a few examples) fall into a similar category where they have that perfect mix of being weird or complex enough that they don’t have a ton of casual players, and bad enough that they don’t get many competitive players either.
In terms of Retreating aerial and aerial smash attacks being unique to corrin/Robin, Mii Gunner and Rob have retreating fair/bair and min min has aerial smash attacks. Glad to see you trying new chars!
7:06 When being spiked, the edge of the screen becomes the blast zone. So, the reason the K. Rool died first is because he got hit by a spike and died from the screen border blast zone before you could reach the actual blast zone. I don't think it spikes the whole way through, I think it just drags down. So that's why you sometimes die first, and sometimes die second. If your opponent dies first, you've probably landed a spike hitbox. If you die first, it must've been a later hit in the move that doesn't spike.
As a pac man main, I love the silliness of this character and you could play him in any way. (camping with hydrant, approaching with fair or punishing with f-smash)
If HopCat makes a sequel to this video, he should just go all out and cover EVERY Smash 4 veteran EXCEPT Cloud (everyone knows he's really good), Little Mac (everyone knows he's Bottom 5 or worse) and Palutena (everyone knows she's Top 10).
Robin's projectiles get eaten up by every attack because to beat a projectile your attack needs to be within a certain % of their damage, but most of Robin's projectiles are multihits so the damage they are set as having is something like 3-4%
I would recommend looking at some robin stuff from people like synergy to see just what the character can do. Stuff like thunder into aerials and throwing a single Elwind off the edge to hit opponents offstage and combo-ing into it are really neat and make the character feel so much faster and more dynamic!
And now you understand why I call Robin Ganondorf plus projectiles. (also FINALLY someone who uses thunder charge for movement and mix-ups...I popped off when you picked up on that. Truly a common HopCat W.)
Corrin has got to be one of, if not the most underrated character in Smash, honestly. Like, I don't think they're this amazing secret character that everyone is sleeping on, but I think their kit is so much more fun than the other FE characters, and much more unique too (than at least the ones that came before them, Robin aside). I could never get to grips with Bayo, so I played a lot of Corrin when they first came out, and while I'm no Corrin main or anything; whenever I do boot up Smash Ultimate, I'll always make sure to have a couple of Corrin games.
There's lots of properties with Pac-Man items that go unnoticed. Hydrant has a health pool if you attack for half it's health the next attack with knock the hydrant so a b-air will prime it, then the next hard hit will release the Hydrant. With that said. Throwing an apple last will change the trajectory upwards for mix up potential. Also players instinctively want to attack the hydrant, so leaving it as bait then attacking opponents when they make the attempt is smart. (even if you tell someone they still instinctively attack it) Leaving a trampoline on stage is good for stage control, causing players to jump over it, a red trampoline will cause any player to trip. It's also the only thing in game that will cause banjo to trip during wonder wing, it can also absorb full charge shots like Samus neutral B
I don't remember who, but I saw someone that started calling fundies "ABC fighters" just so the fighters that are weird but don't have a clear gimmick or archetype could be "XYZ fighters" his example was Ness, but I think the definition applies to PacMan as well
