They should have made the original Shinobi for Genesis. Missed opportunity. The Master System definitely did a nice job on it. NES version is an embarrassment.

I stumbled upon this video by accident and boy am I glad. I never knew the NES had its own version of Shinobi that was originally for the sms. Shinobi was the first video game I played and what set me off to become a gamer. Very nice tittle.

Shinobi (played at a friend's) and Double Dragon sold me on the SMS as a kid. Then the floodgates of uber-gaming opened: Phantasy Star, Wonderboy 3, Altered Beast, Rastan, Rampage, Zillion, Vigilante (another near perfect arcade port) and many others.

It's a reference to the NES game "Prisoners of War" - it had this "engrish" spelling at the end.

@calitz87 Apparently he was a bonafide gamer. I looked at the catalog for his estate auction and was surprised as to how many of the items were classic and vintage arcade cabinets. Stuff like original table-top sit-down "Ms. Pacman" and "Tetris" machines, but also the uber-rare three-screen Konami "X-Men" cabinet. The kind of stuff that most of us (and possibly him too as these looked pristine) would mothball; save for the occasional trip to MAGFest.

The problem is that the nerd became popular over his swearing, and legitimate game analysis and history wasn't really implemented till later videos, so he has to swear all the time to keep his theme. I love the nerd for his history, and some of his jokes, but this is the exact same thing but more pleasant, so I have to completely agree with you on that one.

Wow, that's weird. I just posted my Shinobi PC Engine review and check my subs and here this video is. As always, great video. It's really a shame the we never honestly got a truly great arcade port. Even the PCE version was missing attacks, the entire second level, and the bonus stage. I had almost forgotten that the 8-bit versions had lifebars!

@Disthron
@Disthron 11 лет назад
Personally I think the Master System was capable of a better port of Shinobi than the one it got. The only part of it I was really impressed with was the bonus stage. Anyway, interesting episode. I've seen a couple of other people try to do a similar thing, but a lot of them compare games that only really have the name in common. Witch I think is an unfair comparison. Like Rambo on the NES and Rambo on the SMS are to totally different games.

Fun fact, the Masked Ninja is actually Joe Musashi's father. You find that out through the "epilogue" of the arcade version... That is, if you have the mad skillz required to beat the arcade version. Once you get to the last 3 stages, the game disables the option of inserting more quarters to continue, and since the game employs one-hit kills to siphon quarters out of poor kids, beating this sucker is almost impossible. I've only done it once, and I almost broke my PS3 in the process,

Actually the true sequel to the arcade version is Shadow Dancer which featured nearly identical gameplay to the original arcade...Shinobi on the Genesis featured different gameplay as well as Shinobi III. I would wager they are only loosely related.

@J5MARLON What are you talking about? The DC came out 5 years earlier? I think you mean 2, and it played GD roms versus DVD roms, so they weren't technically par. Other than that though, you're right, I was mostly just appalled by your '5 yrs early' comment.
@Sinn0100
@Sinn0100 4 года назад
A couple of things, ninjas did actually utilize firearms in ancient Japan. The weapon used in Shinobi is actually an MP5 submachine gun. Hollywood has taught us incorrectly as usual. The Nes might have the ability to run Shinobi better...it was far weaker than the Master System. Technically the Master System should be able to truly do the original Shinobi justice.

It's hard to believe that two versions of the same game can be radically different from each other. Of course, it's strange that the NES version at least gives you an ending rather than a Game Over screen.

Shinobi (original arcade version) is a very underrated super classic that is only unpopular because of it's difficulty, one direct hit and your a goner.....but make no mistake the original is a masterpiece. Only recently released in it's true full arcade glory on the Sonic Genesis Collection for PS3 and Xbox360.

Right on target on this one! Let me tell you about Tengen. Tengen was a sub-company of Atari Games that was dedicated to make games for the NES. However, they did not follow the limits for game releases per year for Nintendo, and they cloned the chip that Nintendo used for recognizing a game as a legit release. There was a lawsuit that Nintendo won, and succesfully appealed by Atari(Tengen), which lead to have more pirated games released for the NES in the later years of that console

@BalancedSpirit79 13 лет назад
This is just my opinion, but neither of the home ports of Shinobi did it for me. There was just something special about the arcade version. I loved the music and atmosphere it provided. Also, even though it was very challenging for me, when I was able to get to a new level or beat a boss for the first time, I got an amazing rush of accomplishment. ^ I guess this is what you call a nostalgia overload, heh.

It would be cool if you did Ninja Gaiden on NES vs SMS. There's a whole trilogy on NES and only one on the Master System. The Master System game plays like Ninja Gaiden 3. You could just compare Ninja Gaiden 1 on NES to it or either of the other two/all of them. Just an idea.

While the quality sucks compared to the SMS, I appreciated tengen porting these over to the NES. It allowed me to enjoy master system games with out buying an SMS. On a side note, I think the NES version of shinobi did have short range power ups. I remember the sword at least.

@fmdof Tengen didn't make games for the PC Engine. I'm sure some other company released a version for the PC Engine in Japan, but Tengen definitely didn't. Plus, I've never disputed the fact that there were other licensed versions of Tengen on other systems in Japan. I only asserted that there wasn't a licensed version of Shinobi on the NES in any locale.
