8:07 Explanation: At the beginning of Knuckles's story the Emerald shatters and most of it is gone from the altar. However, before his last level, he puts all except 3 pieces back. This is the time in the story that each of the other characters get there, so if you look at the Emerald close enough, it has part of it still missing, as was the case in the scene before Knuckles's last level.
Nice review! but... 1) invonsistant story, when I was a child I thoght they were investigated by the police :) but in some cases those charachter battles doesn't contradict themself. take knuckles VS. battles: nobody is defeated in the cutscene, so the story isn't actually altered... the Gamma scene is actually explaind at the end: the blue flicky is the son (or relative/friend) of the pink flicky inside beta and the white flicky inside gamma. the flicky inside gamma probably stopped him from harming it's son (or relative/friend). you can see them at the end of Amy's and Gamma story. lip synking: the the lips move according to the japanese audio so they obviously won't much the english audio... camera: still exist!
I got one as soon as it came out. I fucking loved my dreamcast. I was gutted when it died but it was a great console and its a testament too its greatness that fans still produce games for it to this day.
even though i LOVE sonic adventure after she pointed out the flaws with this game i understood + the fact that it didnt age well when ported to ps3 and xbox360
I grew up with sonic adventure DX and btw Amy's bird that hypnotizes the robot was actually one of the robots brothers because remember the robots are animals on the inside and only one of the robots brothers escaped eggman initially, also the reason he was blowing the other robots up was to free them from eggman and (spoiler) is why he blows himself and his brother up in his last boss fight
When this game came out it was impressive and ambitious. I really liked it, but it hasn't held up that well over time. Most 3D platformers are like that for me though. As for the Gamma part with the bird, Gamma is a roboticized Flicky as you discover in the ending, so it's the old trope where seeing a loved one snaps you out of your brainwashing. The name Robotnik has kind of entered the SegaSonic canon in this game as it returned in the sequel as his family name. Dr. Eggman sort of owned the insult and had it become his super villain name. I think it was a nicely done way to keep both names even though they've pretty much fully transitioned to Eggman now. I don't feel the Chao were a rip off of Chocobos, they were a rip off of Tamagotchi considering they were designed for use with the VMU.
I got a dreamcast either at launch or near launch and I remember playing Sonic Adventure all night long. Man the memories are awesome, the game isn't so much but still provides great memories.
Some of the things stated in this video are just absurd. In the footage she constantly forgets to use the homing attack, which is available right from the start and a vital tool in the game, and then she complains about how "difficult it is to aim". I guess you should also complain about Super Mario Brothers having bad controls, because it didn't instruct you how to jump over the first goomba. Fucking ridiculous.
Stephen Weir Again, the jumping being "imprecise" is a completely bullshit thing to complain about because the entire game is DESIGNED around the use of the homing attack. You're not supposed to manually aim Sonic around, and from the video it's clear that she didn't figure this out until she got to Red Mountain which is pretty far in the game. It's akin to complaining that Mario is too unfair because you die in one hit, completely ignoring the super mushrooms. It's a stupid complaint.
Stephen Weir You're a dipshit troll who posts like he's on 4chan and perceives the slightest callout on bullshit complaints to indicate fanboyism. Yeah, I DO think they added a reason to have a homing attack in the game. Because they're game designers and that's exactly the sort of fundamental mechanic they have to address. If a gameplay mechanic doesn't work they find a way to fix it. The same way Mario 64 added an attack/grab/contextual action button when no other game in the series had one before it. They were addressing a gameplay problem that needed fixing. That's basic game design. You may not think they're the brightest developers, but I can say for a fact they know more than you do, shit for brains. How many games has your stupid ass designed? That's right, none. I'm sure however that you're inevitably going to bring up Sonic 2006 because you're obviously just another "hardkoar gayman" /v/tard with a stick up his ass about anyone who likes Sonic and you're clearly too stupid to be unpredictable. Yes, 06 was a bad game; no, it can't be compared to the Adventure series. SA1 and 2 didn't have control bugs that got in the way of you playing it. All they had was mild physics quirkiness. Sonic Team has designed more good 3D Sonics than bad ones. Generations, Colors, and even Unleashed all nailed Sonic's gameplay perfectly, even if Unleashed had werehog sections that bogged the game down. Lost World was also a good game that idiots like you would cry foul on simply because the controls weren't immediately intuitive and took practice to get used to. It's funny that you call me out on hostility when your entire post is nothing but a string of insults without a SINGLE intelligent point to make, just like a typical retarded grade-school 4channer. Your brain is literally full of rat feces and your your lack of cogency, your >greentexting and your hostility all exemplify that fact. The door swings both ways, jackass, except it hits you in the face even harder. Good job.
Also, if I may, the stories aren't actually suffering from incongruity if you think about it and notice a few things. 1. As knuckles gains more pieces of the Master Emerald more of the Master Emerald is built up in the other character's story lines. It varies depending on when the character can actually go visit the Master Emerald. 2. Chaos doesn't lose the Chaos Emeralds that he has, which is why he retains and grows in form. 3. The point is they all fought, no one died or got hurt
I imported a Dreamcast and this game in summer '99 as a personal high school grad gift (yeah, I'm old!). I still love it to this day. This was the 1st game I beat completely in Japanese through basic Japanese comprehension. Tho the dialog wasnt that complex, it did help me get around easier when I would've been stuck otherwise. The soundtrack is beautiful and I just love the JP voice acting (esp. Sonic). The temple level bgm reminded me of Panzer Saga. If only the DC had a Panzer game :'(
Good video as always! I played this when it came out on Gamecube a while back, and while it's a fun game, I think it's really a product of its time. It has a good deal of problems dealing with 3D elements like camera systems and lock-on. The first level is always a blast to play though, I think it's my favorite in the game; sometimes I'll just play that one level just to get it out of my system!
@AngryMrBubbles This game is available for purchase now, for gamers in the present. The point of my non-nostalgic reviews are to review older games that are presently available for download that I have never played before, to judge if others who have also not played the game before should also download and play the game. A game, much like other forms of media, is not perceived or experienced the same way in the present as it was in the past.
2:06 Can't really fairly include the comics... rightfully Sonic Adventure is purely the Japanese company's vision. If nothing else, as evidenced by the fact that this was the beginning of trying to bring the name "Eggman" to West and eradicate "Robotnik" from the vernacular. 10:00 suggests it's all about the Beatles, but I'm not sure that was the case. You can read up more on the Westernization of Sonic here: info.sonicretro.org/Game_Development:Sonic_the_Hedgehog_(16-bit)#Westernization -- It seems to me that it was really more about trying to fit a '90s American audience rather than copyright concerns. This was common in many other video games that gave up Japanese names to fit something that seemed right to Western audiences. And I'm not sure it explains why "Eggman" is suddenly okay now, if it were really a copyright issue. Not like Beatles music gotten any less popular / protected. 2:21 I'm from Pittsburgh, PA originally, and there's this little happenin' spot just outside of downtown called Station Square. I was always amused that Robotnik -er, Eggman, intended to destroy Station Square and build his city ... directly adjacent to Pittsburgh. It's also a stop along Pittsburgh's light rail line, so there's even a "train" that operates through the real-life Station Square. This amounted to lots of joking between me and my brothers over Robotnik's plans. 2:46 I agree about "policemen and guns"... Sonic Adventure was also the beginning of taking Sonic out of the fantasy land that seemed to just be "nature versus technology" and put him directly into some kind of tangent of the human world, rendering Sonic and all his "friends" as huge freaks of nature with monster eyes. I never understood why this is appealing, but it has persisted and was probably worst in Sonic '06. 3:19 It's not the "camera" that kills you, but rather deficiencies in the world detection... 3:54 Some might call it a "blessing", others call it an admittance that Sega couldn't figure out how to control Sonic easily in 3D. Big the Cat's sequence was largely a stupid sideline that should never have been put into the game... Overall, Sonic Adventure to me was Sega trying to reinvent Sonic without knowing what the audience was supposed to be. Sonic in the 90s belonged to the "Radical 90s" generation and made sense. Sonic Adventure came out just at the cusp of the 2000s, and by this point, the "Radical 90s" were over. And I think Sonic largely became unsure of his reason for being. Mario meanwhile never deviated from being himself and I think has largely remained consistent and acceptable, especially to nostalgic fans. Sonic probably should have done the same. I think Sonic could and should be rebooted back to the base that he came from, but Sega continues to make reboot after reboot with all kinds of friends and complex storylines, when really they ought to just take him back to the very simple, non-complex, no-speech war of "nature versus technology" with a little bit of magic (i.e. chaos emeralds) thrown into the mix... and not chaos emeralds that are part an ancient evil or whatever (e.g. Chaos), but just chaos emeralds... for the sake of simply "chaos."
I'm one of those people who consideres the Homing Attack a blessing but games like Adventure 2, Shadow the Hedgehog, Unleashed, Colors and Generations implemented the Homing Attack a little better so I can see how someone who was spoiled by later 3D Sonic games would see the Homing Attack as disorienting in this game. (yes I have played all mainstream Sonic games)
@WozzyBear85 Although I think you're being a little bit mean about it, I basically agree. The entire point of that scene with Gamma is the mystery of what happens, which is ultimately paid off when you beat his story mode. I also felt that the bit about the plane crashing on the Egg Carrier but "landing perfectly fine" didn't make any sense. They landed with the nose buried on the deck, and with no way to take off again. Which is why you can't initially leave the Carrier until beating a stage.
4 million of those sales where within the USA and within only 18 months after the dreamcast launch. The sales numbers can be only that low based off of the marketing down was a obismal failure, there really wasn't any. Nintendo is having the same problem today with only a little over 2 million sales in the USA within 14 months after the system launch. The other problem is stores were still refusing to stock sega products, which is why saturn did so bad stateside as well as costing 30% of Segas job loss during the saturn, most stores like kbtoys wanted a unreasonable majority profit on each system, game, and accessory sold and demanded a large sum of money up front, which is why KBtoys went out of business, doing that too much to too many companies is bound to only cause it to go down over time. But they are not responsible for the final decision. You can thank Peter Moore x-president of Sega of America who pulled the plug on it before quickly leaving to go work for Microsoft on the original Xbox. Convincing the Sega Of America board that selling software will gain them more money than producing and maintaining hardware. Sega of Japan and Europe continued the system on until around 2007. Also this wasn't sega's first attempt on a 3d sonic game, there was many actual 3d games such as Sonic R, Sonic X-treme(unreleased), and a small part in Sonic Jam with a 3d hub level.
As corny as it is, I love Knuckles' rap theme! XD Excellent review Rinry. It was very informative and fluid. It's been about 5 years since the last time I played this game on my old Dreamcast, and I think you perfectly described my feelings for it. Yeah, the controls are clunky, the camera sucks, the dialogue is awkward...But it is SONIC in 3-D! And it's not a bad game. The level designs are creative, the graphics are great, and the sense of speed in Sonic's stages are viscerally satisfying.
I remember skipping high school on 09/09/99 to pick up my pre-ordered Dreamcast and Sonic Adventure. Once I saw the intro and the Killer Whale scene, I was sold. I still think SA is a great game and has one of the greatest video game soundtracks ever.
Thanks for the review! I only ever played "Sonic Adventure DX" on my GameCube. In which the Tails stages (after the easy first one) actually got really tough! I struggled a lot to beat Sonic on a couple of those. Interesting to learn that the original was apparently easier. I think maybe you should've finished the story modes to see how it all turned out, though. The ending stage, after you complete all the characters' stories, is kinda messed up . :)
Before I watch any further, the comics are not canon to the games so his name in that might as well be "Bluey" as far as I'm concerned because it doesn't count for anything and should never be brought up when talking about the games..
The spindash isn't as useful? If anything, it's more useful to the point of game-breaking. You can literally skip that whole pier section of Emerald Beach with a well-timed Spindash + Jump; and it can also be used to gain speed incredibly quickly. Also, if you can't figure out the "wind key" bit and what you call the "hypnotising Gamma" bit, I don't know what to say. I don't think anyone else had problems with those.
@mistertitanic It doesn't matter if EVERY SINGLE GAME according to you had camera issues, it was and still is a problem and should not be ignored by any reviewer.
Gamma is hypnotized by the bird because his other bird friends are actually inside of the robots so by destroying them he frees his friends this is summed up in the final cut scene of gammas story.
Just letting you know since you are using the Steam version which is Sonic Adventure DX on the gamecube it's a much buggier version or in at least my experience I found it to be. I encountered more glitches and camera hindrance than I did on the Dreamcast. The reason Gamma didn't take the bird from Amy is explained at the end of his story. The thing about Gamma and his "Brothers" is that they are all glorified badniks meaning they are all powered by the little animals inside them like the days of old. It's revealed upon Gamma dying at the hands of Beta that there is a bird (similar to the one following Amy) in both himself and Beta. These 3 birds are connected to each other, most likely family. Gamma seeing the bird was enough for the bird with himself to perhaps have influence over his thought process/actions. And also Gamma is saving his brothers or rather the animals inside them which could very well again be the bird inside him influencing his action.
Did you ever play Sonic Zone? It was a single camera view 3D sprites and looks more similar to FF tactics environments than the endless camera circling of Dream Cast
Great review! Though this game has it's flaws, I still love it. It was the Sonic game that made me a 100% Sonic freak and 12 years later, I haven't regretted it. :)
The songs in this games are lovingly emblazoned in my memory. My brother would sit up and make fun of them for hours on end, but then, like anything you spend too much time with, I developed a morbid affection for them. Amy's theme used to arouse me.
I still remember my friend getting a Dreamcast and saying it was going to beat all other consoles. I laughed at him when it failed. I think I might go laugh at him again and see what happens ;) Great job on the review.
In Japan, Sonic Adventure was released in December 1998. The Dreamcast wasn't available in the west until Sepetmber/October 1999, so that it could launch with more games (The Japanese DC only had 4 games at launch). The Japanese original and the international revision of SA are more or less the same, save for a few fixed bugs and aesthetic differences, like the cowgirl in Casinopolis.
Interesting review. I played this game years ago on the GC and I'm pretty nostalgic about it. But you missed some details about Gamma. The reason he is trying to "kill" his friends to save them is because he is trying to free the little animals within them, and that's also why he gets freaked out when he meets Amy with that bird. Or at least I think so. It was a long time ago.
the reason Gamma gets "hypnotized" by the bird and not take it is because Gamma is the birds father and the final boss in Gamma's story is the birds mom, Amy reunites the bird to the now free Gamma and his mate at the end of her story
The whole 'bird hypnotizing Gamma' thing... did you not get that Gamma himself retains the consciousness of the bird trapped inside him? When he says he's going to 'save' the other E-Series units, he means he's planning on freeing the birds inside them. Even at the end when he self-destructs, you see the little birdy inside fly off with Amy's. He's not being hypnotized there. He's being compelled to break his programming. Story-wise, it's my favorite part of the game.
Almost correct but the other way round, season one of Sonic X is based on this game, I believe the dreamcast original was released in 1998, this is probably my favourite game of all time.
One thing I'd like to point out, to shed light on E-102. When it lets the bird go, it has a memory of its past. The bird's important to it, which if you've beaten its story mode, I assume you found out.
Its not a cartoon; its an anime. But yes! It is, I just noticed that after reading your comment, as I've never played Sonic Adventure myself and haven't seen the anime in awhile
I never got people who liked this better than Sonic Adventure 2. Sure, SA2 didn't have the open aspects of the first one like going around the city while not in a level, but to me, that's better. The camera is also majorly improved (although still not great) and the graphics look better. All the stories fit together better as well. And, the levels just seemed more fun. I also liked that you could replay a level without trying again for a different goal. And the 3d green hill zone was great.
I never played the original sonic games before, but I played this one. It was my first sonuc game and I really enjoyed it. Sonic adventure 2 even winned me over
Silly Rinry, I'm sure someone has already mentioned this but E-102 just like all of other Eggmans' original robots, all had an animal inside. The animal inside E-102 affected its' actions The bird inside E-102 is one of the birds in the picture the bird accompanying Amy is carrying around. Then the reason he's going around destroying the rest is to free the animals trapped inside. A great review nonetheless, I don't necessarily agree with all points but it was a good review!
In every story it want you to feel like you're the main character even if it does take some of the continuity out of the whole story line. And also Gamma isn't killing his friends. Robotic made each of the robots with a bird inside of them, Gamma however was able to retain the consciousness of the bird that's inside him and plans on freeing the other bird that are trapped with in the other robots. As the the bird hypnotizing him thing he realizes that the bird is his friend.
@sudonym Also, Gamma is not saving the robots, he's saving the animals inside of them, hence destroying the robots. It's also strongly implied at the end of his story that the bird inside of him is the blue bird's mother, which is likely why he let it and Amy go free. It really just takes a bit of afterthought to get these points, so it's understandable for people to dislike the story because of them.
I don't think you quite understood the E-102 Gamma story. He doesn't take the bird because he actually is a bird, but he was put inside a robot by Dr. Robotnik to power the robot. When he was a bird, he was in the same family as Amy's Birdy, and he subconsciously remembers. All the other E-100 robots also used to be animals, and he is freeing them by destroying the robot shells.
