I think that the main strength of the Filmation movies were how invested most of the actors were and how they at least sound like they are enjoying their roles. A few could have been better but they aren’t as unbearable to listen to as Dingo or a majority of Good Times/Jetlag/Bevenfield voices tend to be. And the music is pretty decent to listen to even if the lyrics are mostly forgettable.

Isn't it ironic how the only "unofficial Disney sequels" Filmation made were not only based on Walt Disney's first two animated movies but also how Disney *NEVER* made official sequels to them despite their Direct-to-Video craze in the 90s and 2000s? while not subtle in the slightest, there IS a bit of genius to calling the villain "Lord Maliss": the whole idea that the Fruit of Knowledge from the story of Adam and Eve is an apple when, iirc, apples wouldn't have been known in that region at that time is actually a Latin pun from when they were translating the Bible into that language, since the Latin for "evil" is identical to the Latin for "apple", "mal", and of course that's where "malice" comes from, too (if you're curious, there's really no description of the Fruit of Knowledge beyond it being exactly that. i've heard that a more likely candidate for what it could really look like would be a pomegranate, or that it could've actually been _wheat_ and the whole story is a metaphor for the Neolithic agricultural revolution)
@UsagiNintendoGirl
@UsagiNintendoGirl 3 месяца назад
It's also genius because, well, what caused Snow White to enter her slumber? I think Maliss as a Snow White villain had a lot of potential, it's just a shame the movie wasn't that good.
@KasumiRINA
@KasumiRINA 2 месяца назад
Fruit is clearly a metaphor for knowledge, like if people KNOW about evil, they cannot resist doing it due to our own nature, and it also brings knowing mortality with it, as instead of living carefree in the Garden like magical forest critters, men get depressed about death... I'd call the villain "dude Applebottom" instead though.

It’s pretty sad that all these Animation studios that were peak in the 80s met a pretty anti-climactic demise. Rankin Bass last project is Santa Baby! I still have a HUGE soft spot for HAPPILY EVER AFTER as something I used to watch on VHS as a preschooler. It's not a great film but it has a lot of little fun elements to it. Like as an autistic kid who had a lot of trouble in a school environment I related quite a bit to Thunderella having trouble with her powers while wishing I was as cool as Critterina. I revisited this movie in college watching it with my roommates who had never heard of it, & we all LOVED Lord Malice in his evil giggling ways. Very Vincent Price-ian. Personally I still love that regardless of her effectiveness, Snow White was willing to fight back & she's technically the one who killed him with him own magic cape. (I always found it so unsettling that it's implied he killed his own goofy minions with that cape.) Rest in power, Irene Cara. "Flashdance (What A Feeling)" is one of my favorite songs, & I still love the ending theme she sang for this movie.

If there's anything to understand from my experience in animation school, the older, more obscure animated films are kind of like a hidden treasure to us, and that owl with lung cancer was a hit. :)

I always forget how many 80s cartoons used Star Wars sound effects, like the light saber clashing sound when the Prince gets zapped in this, and Transformers G1 used a LOT of stock Star Wars SFX, as did the other Sunbow shows at the time. I tried looking up if Lucasfilm had a licensed sound library at the time but couldn't find anything conclusive, they have one now but apparently not back then? Just something I noticed, those OT Star Wars sound effects are indelibly burned into my brain so they always stand out when they're in something else.

Honestly I like the idea of the Princess being the one to save the Prince for once. It flips the cliche of fairytales on its head and is always a nice change of pace. This is why I’ve always liked the games where Princess Peach is one of the hero’s and fights the main villain. The change I would have made is give Snow White Thunderella’s arc of not being confident with herself and abilities and the Dwarfelles all encouraging Snow White to overcome her fears. She is unsure of herself and doesn’t think she has what it takes to be a hero because she’s a Princess and that Princesses can’t be brave and fight evil. This way we have a more compelling reason for the Dwarfelles to be there and also promote some girl power without it being too sexist or in your face.

@Polemodrome

A whimpering out end to one of the most forgettable animation studio ever. I can't think of a single true classic associated to them. Anything they do, another studio can do it better than them. Even the He-Man of Mike Young Productions topped their version. Maybe Fat Albert is their most memorable flagship show and even then, I am not certain it is widely remembered by others than by its devoted fanbase. I have heard positive things of Mighty Mouse and their take on Star Trek as well, but that's really about it. The only commendable thing I can say about them, is that they did their best to keep jobs localized in USA. But when others can do it cheaper and better, they don't really stand a fighting chance in hell.

@@PolemodromeTo be honest, they dealt mainly in volume, as in the late 60's up through the 70's Filmation and Hanna-Barbera were getting quite a lot of gigs from the three networks Saturday Mornings. That's why Filmation was known for factory producing their shows, and the limited, constantly reused animation. I'd say they had some decent sci-fi fare, they had a pretty good Batman series in the late 60's that came off like an animated version of the Adam West show, but a TERRIBLE 70's Batman cartoon that actually had Adam West and Burt Ward in there. Even they couldn't save it, and it was also the reason why The Joker wasn't in the Legion of Doom in HB's Challenge of the Super Friends. But for every The Archies or He-Man the studio produced, we got crap like "Will the Real Jerry Lewis Please Sit Down" or "Sports Billy."

@@mightyfilm Sport Billy is actually a German-French-American coproduction, even though it was still a Filmation product based on a German comic book series. @@mightyfilm I get what you're saying. It's a perfectly sound argument. Back in the days, the demand was such, the difficulty to offer forced them to wear the quality of their productions dangerously thin. Hey Phelous, I've eagerly waited for your review of this movie, along with the Pinocchio one. I'm really happy that you brought people's attention to these films since I truly feel they're hidden gems of animation. I weirdly felt like we were ripped off in a way? As in we'll never actually get to see what the other Filmation movies would have been like. I'd truly believe if someone said Katzenberg and Disney did everything in their power in order to put down this studio, so they'd wipe out a new competitor in the market. It's a shame because even though these movies aren't 100% perfect (And of course it's fine if they aren't), there are SO so many things these two movies did right! (I'm writing this while keeping both "Pinocchio" and "Happily Ever After" in mind) For instance! - The voices they pick out for characters are really good in my opinion; - The animation is still really nice and it clearly shows that the animators put a lot more heart and soul into the characters and their movements. It's kind of disheartening and lame if people claimed the animation was "barely above Saturday Morning Cartoons" since animation in itself is difficult. I believe the people working on these films did the best they could with what they were given and it still looks nice and flowy. The character designs are memorable and the backgrounds are very pleasing to the eyes as well; - The villain designs in these movies are SO damn good, they're not -just- memorable, but their deaths/defeats are brutal and awesome. Definitely remind me of classic Disney deaths too (Lord Maliss transforming and becoming trapped as a strange human/dragon statue is just really cool). I give props to the writer(s) of these movies for trying out new things (Even though some of the stuff got censored for dumb reasons, sadly :/), giving their own twists to these stories which gives the movies an additional charm. I know people are easy to diss on movies if there's a bad song in one part, or an odd writing choice in another part (For instance: The ending where Snow White said the Orko lookalike was JUST as dear to her as the Prince WAS odd. This at least could have been improved a little bit if they got more time to spend together? Or if they just changed Snow White's line to something else). Nevertheless, there's a LOT more good in these films than there is bad, and there are many things that are worth appreciating here, instead of just superficially being brushed off as "bad movies". It's a lot easier to point out the wrong in things, but I feel Filmation gave us something fun and memorable that's worth coming back to.

In addition to the celebrities, you mentioned, you forgot Carol Channing, who voiced Muddy. Then, there was Linda Gary, who voiced a couple of the dwarfelles; she was probably best known for voicing, Peter Parker‘s aunt May in the 1990s Spider-Man. I never saw the movie as a kid, but it blows my mind on why it took so long for the film to be released to the public. And, of course, it had to be trigger-happy - or in this case, lawsuit happy - Disney. Which relates to why the NES game was canceled. This Atlus-developed game was set to be released in 1991, but an indefinite delay of the film’s North American release resulted in the game’s cancellation.
